The working group set up by the SEAP-IAP addresses in this Part II some general considerations and five particular considerations to be taken into account when a biological sample of human origin, coming from our archives, acquires a different destination from the usual one, in this case for research. From this moment on, we must follow mandatory legal and ethical rules, and the different recitals provide us with guidelines to ensure good practice, both for biological material and its associated data. The traditional task of custody given to the Pathological Anatomy is approached, as always, from the point of view of responsibility and, in this article, adjusted to its time.

Article Synopsis
  • Proper storage of pathology specimens is crucial for patient safety, but there are no established guidelines detailing the minimum storage duration for samples.
  • A working group from the Spanish Society of Anatomic Pathology reviewed literature and drew up recommendations after discussions and voting.
  • The established minimum storage times include at least 10 years for paraffin embedded blocks and histological preparations, 3 years for cervico-vaginal cytology, and 5 years for extracted nucleic acids, among other classifications.

Article Synopsis
  • The article reviews the 2023 activity report from the Interventional Cardiology Association of the Spanish Society of Cardiology, highlighting key trends in interventional cardiology practices in Spain.
  • A survey involving 119 hospitals revealed a slight decrease in diagnostic studies but an increase in percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI), with a notable rise in the use of drug-coated balloons and techniques for plaque modification.
  • The findings indicate a stabilization in coronary interventions while showcasing a growth in complex procedures, particularly for valvular and nonvalvular structural heart diseases, with primary PCI becoming the leading treatment for myocardial infarction.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study validated the Artificial Intelligence Prognostic Scoring System for Myelodysplastic Syndromes (AIPSS-MDS), showing it was better than traditional scoring systems in predicting overall and leukemia-free survival in two different patient groups from Spain and Taiwan.
  • * The strong performance of AIPSS-MDS suggests it could be a key tool for tailoring treatment in CMML, and future research should look into adding genetic data to enhance risk assessment and patient care.

Myelodysplastic neoplasms (MDS) are a heterogeneous group of hematological stem cell disorders characterized by dysplasia, cytopenias, and increased risk of acute leukemia. As prognosis differs widely between patients, and treatment options vary from observation to allogeneic stem cell transplantation, accurate and precise disease risk prognostication is critical for decision making. With this aim, we retrieved registry data from MDS patients from 90 Spanish institutions.

Background: Pathologic complete response (pCR) after multimodal treatment for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) is used as surrogate marker of success as it is assumed to correlate with improved oncologic outcome. However, long-term oncologic data are scarce.

Methods: This retrospective, multicentre study updated the oncologic follow-up of prospectively collected data from the Spanish Rectal Cancer Project database.

Pleural appendages: Description, incidence and relations with body mass index.

Radiologia (Engl Ed)

April 2023

Department of Radiology, East Surrey Hospital, Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, England. Electronic address:

Background And Aims: Pleural appendages (PA) are portions of extrapleural fat that hang from the chest wall. They have been described on videothoracoscopy, however their appearance, frequency and possible relationship with the amount of patient's fat remain unknown. Our aim is to describe their appearances and prevalence on CT, and determinate whether their size and number is higher in obese patients.

Long-term outcomes of extended DAPT in a real-life cohort of consecutive STEMI patients.

Rev Esp Cardiol (Engl Ed)

July 2023

Institut Hospital del Mar d'Investigacions Mediques, IMIM, Barcelona, Spain; Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Enfermedades Cardiovasculares (CIBERCV), Spain. Electronic address:

Introduction And Objectives: Dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) duration after ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) remains a matter of debate.

Methods: We analyzed the effect of DAPT on 5-year all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, and cardiovascular readmission or mortality in a cohort of 1-year survivor STEMI patients.

Results: A total of 3107 patients with the diagnosis of STEMI were included: 93% of them were discharged on DAPT, a therapy that persisted in 275 high-risk patients at 5 years.

Immune biomarkers to predict SARS-CoV-2 vaccine effectiveness in patients with hematological malignancies.

Blood Cancer J

December 2021

Clinica Universidad de Navarra, Centro de Investigacion Medica Aplicada (CIMA), IDISNA, CIBERONC, Pamplona, Spain.

There is evidence of reduced SARS-CoV-2 vaccine effectiveness in patients with hematological malignancies. We hypothesized that tumor and treatment-related immunosuppression can be depicted in peripheral blood, and that immune profiling prior to vaccination can help predict immunogenicity. We performed a comprehensive immunological characterization of 83 hematological patients before vaccination and measured IgM, IgG, and IgA antibody response to four viral antigens at day +7 after second-dose COVID-19 vaccination using multidimensional and computational flow cytometry.

Purpose: Radiation dose received by the neural stem cells of the hippocampus during whole-brain radiotherapy has been associated with neurocognitive decline. The key concern using hippocampal avoidance-prophylactic cranial irradiation (HA-PCI) in patients with small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) is the incidence of brain metastasis within the hippocampal avoidance zone.

Methods: This phase III trial enrolled 150 patients with SCLC (71.

Objective: Primary percutaneous coronary intervention (P-PCI) has demonstrated its efficacy in patients with ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). However, patients with STEMI ≥75 years receive less P-PCI than younger patients despite their higher in-hospital morbimortality. The objective of this analysis was to determine the effectiveness of P-PCI in patients with STEMI ≥75 years.
