Eosinophils are polymorphonuclear cells that have progressively gained attention due to their involvement in multiple diseases and, more recently, in various homeostatic processes. Their well-known roles range from asthma and parasitic infections to less prevalent diseases such as eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis, eosinophilic esophagitis, and hypereosinophilic syndrome. In recent years, various biological therapies targeting these cells have been developed, altering the course of eosinophilic pathologies.

However, this approach can lead to late diagnosis, invasive treatments, and complications. This study analyzes the effectiveness of selective screening and identifies additional factors related to DDH.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAccurate malaria diagnosis with precise identification of Plasmodium species is crucial for an effective treatment. While microscopy is still the gold standard in malaria diagnosis, it relies heavily on trained personnel. Artificial intelligence (AI) advances, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have significantly improved diagnostic capabilities and accuracy by enabling the automated analysis of medical images.

Objective: The expression level of programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) is the only approved biomarker for predicting response to immunotherapy, yet its efficacy is not always consistent. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) has been associated with tumor aggressiveness and poorer prognosis across various cancer types and may serve as a useful biomarker for monitoring treatment response. The objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between LDH levels prior to the start of treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and clinical outcomes in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Background: This study aimed to compare the rates of postoperative and permanent hypocalcemia between postthyroidectomy indocyanine green angiography and indocyanine green angiography-guided thyroidectomy performed intraoperatively for identification and preservation of the parathyroids.
Methods: We undertook a retrospective study of 2 cohorts of patients with thyroid cancer undergoing total thyroidectomy and central neck dissection. The first cohort (control group) included patients who underwent postthyroidectomy indocyanine green angiography to predict parathyroid function by scoring the degree of fluorescence (0, black; nonvascularized; 1, gray/heterogeneous: partially vascularized; and 2, white: well vascularized), and the second cohort (angiography-guided thyroidectomy) included patients undergoing initially indocyanine green angiography-guided thyroidectomy to identify the feeding vessels of the parathyroid glands followed by postthyroidectomy indocyanine green angiography.

Introduction: Recent research has identified gut microbiota dysbiosis as a potential contributing factor in schizophrenia, leading to growing interest in exploring probiotics as a complementary approach to traditional antipsychotic treatments. This study aims to systematically evaluate the current evidence on the efficacy of probiotics in improving clinical symptoms of schizophrenia, offering a novel perspective into their potential role as an adjunctive strategy.
Methods: A systematic search was conducted to review randomized clinical trials, adhering to the PRISMA guidelines.

Ischemic heart disease is the most common cardiovascular cause of death in women worldwide. Obstructive coronary atherosclerosis is the primary cause of myocardial infarction (MI), however, non-atherosclerotic mechanisms of MI, such as spontaneous coronary artery dissection, vasospasm, microvascular dysfunction, embolization, inflammation, coronary anomalies, infectious and infiltrative causes are increasingly being recognized. Emerging data suggest that women are two to five times more likely to have an MI in the absence of coronary atherosclerosis compared to men, but they continue to remain underdiagnosed and undertreated, partly due to underdiagnosis and limited understanding of these mechanisms.

Background: Super-refractory status epilepticus (SRSE) is an extremely serious neurological emergency. Risk factors and mechanisms involved in transition from refractory status epilepticus (RSE) to SRSE are insufficiently studied.
Methods: This was a multicenter retrospective cohort study of consecutive patients diagnosed and treated for RSE at two reference hospital over 5 years in Ecuador.

Background And Objectives: Several computational pipelines for biomedical data have been proposed to stratify patients and to predict their prognosis through survival analysis. However, these analyses are usually performed independently, without integrating the information derived from each of them. Clustering of survival data is an underexplored problem, and current approaches are limited for biomedical applications, whose data are usually heterogeneous and multimodal, with poor scalability for high-dimensionality.

Introduction: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common peripheral nerve entrapment disease, and it is a subject of great interest and concern to medical professionals and the general public. Our study aims to analyze and compare the quality and accuracy of the information related to CTS provided by social media platforms (SMPs) and the new large language models (LLM).
Methods: On YouTube, the first 20 videos in English and the first 20 videos in Spanish when searching for "carpal tunnel syndrome" and "síndrome túnel carpo" were selected.

Adnexal torsion is a rare cause of abdominal pain in middle childhood and, in general, the diagnosis is often delayed due to the lack of specificity of symptoms and imaging tests. We describe the case of a girl in middle childhood who came to the emergency department for pain in the right iliac fossa of approximately 15 hours of evolution associated with partial refusal of food intake and vomiting. The initial examination showed normal vital signs, a soft abdomen, pain on palpation in the lower region, but no signs of peritoneal irritation, a mild leucocytosis with no other signs of infection and the initial abdominal ultrasound showed no objective pathology.

Background: Five fulfilled hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH)-2004 criteria, and the HScore are widely used and recommended by international expert consensus to diagnose secondary HLH. Both diagnostic scores have never been validated in heterogeneous patient cohorts of secondary HLH patients. We aimed to systematically optimize and validate diagnostic criteria of secondary HLH using a multicenter approach.

Objectives: To analyse the effects on respiratory function, lung volume and the regional distribution of ventilation and perfusion of routine postural repositioning in mechanically ventilated critically ill patients.
Methods: Prospective descriptive physiological study. We evaluated gas-exchange, lung mechanics, and Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) determined end-expiratory lung impedance and regional ventilation and perfusion distribution in five body positions: supine-baseline (S1); first lateralisation at 30° (L1); second supine position (S2), second contralateral lateralisation (L2) and third final supine position (S3).

The main objective of the activity carried out in an intensive care unit (ICU) and in general, in all hospitalization units, is to provide all the human and material resources to offer the best therapeutic care to admitted patients. Work in multidisciplinary teams, made up of specialists in intensive care medicine as those responsible for the patients, doctors from other specialties, specialized nursing, physiotherapists, nutritionists, and clinical pharmacists is an optimal approach to achieve the proposed objective. The activities of the clinical pharmacist can be developed at different levels (basic, intermediate, and excellent) depending on the degree of involvement, the time dedicated, the training, and the available resources.
