Altered methylation pattern in EXOC4 is associated with stroke outcome: an epigenome-wide association study.

Clin Epigenetics

September 2022

Stroke Pharmacogenomics and Genetics, IIB-Sant Pau, Institut de Recerca de Sant Pau, Hospital Sant Pau, C/Sant Antoni Mª Claret,167, 08025, Barcelona, Spain.

Background And Purpose: The neurological course after stroke is highly variable and is determined by demographic, clinical and genetic factors. However, other heritable factors such as epigenetic DNA methylation could play a role in neurological changes after stroke.

Methods: We performed a three-stage epigenome-wide association study to evaluate DNA methylation associated with the difference between the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) at baseline and at discharge (ΔNIHSS) in ischaemic stroke patients.

Anti-deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) antibodies in the clinical laboratory are intimately linked to the diagnosis and monitoring of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE); however, the characteristics of the analytical methods and the properties of the antibodies themselves are heterogeneous. To review the definition and properties of anti-double-stranded anti-DNA (anti-dsDNA) antibodies, the adequacy of analytical methods, and the clinical requirements for this biomarker. Through PubMed we searched the existing literature with the terms anti-dsDNA, editorial, review, guideline, meta-analysis and SLE.

Since the pandemic erupted due to SARS-CoV-2, many of the usual social health services have had to adapt to provide safety and prevent infection, a priority in vulnerable groups where pregnant women are found.

New treatment strategies such as immune checkpoint inhibitors and oncolytic viruses are opening new possibilities in cancer therapy. Preliminary results in melanoma and other tumors showed that the combination of talimogene laherparepvec with an anti-PD-1/PD-L1 or anti-CTLA4 has greater efficacy than either therapy alone, without additional safety concerns beyond those expected for each agent. The presence of residual cancer after neoadjuvant chemotherapy in early breast cancer patients is an unmet medical need.
