Thoracic hernias: What the radiologist should know.

Thoracic hernias encompass the protrusion of thoracic contents through the thorax or intra-abdominal tissue into the thorax. They can be classified as diaphragmatic hernias - either congenital or acquired; pulmonary hernias - involving tissue protrusion through cervical fascia or intercostal spaces; and mediastinal hernias - including cardiac, intrapericardial and hiatal hernias. Prompt identification and classification of thoracic hernias rely on diagnostic imaging, primarily through computed tomography and magnetic resonance, to identify associated complications.

International cooperation in radiology training: A multipronged approach.

Introduction: Medical imaging has undergone significant technical advancements in recent years, posing a considerable challenge for radiologists to stay up-to-date with emerging modalities and their applications in daily practice. This challenge is even more daunting in developing countries with limited resources compared to the US and other developed nations with greater economic assets. The collaboration between the United States and other advanced nations with radiological institutions in Latin America has been a significant achievement in the pursuit of new opportunities for continuous medical education.

Multizonal observational study conducted by clinical practitioners on Repatha® use in patients with hyperlipidemia (ZERBINI): Colombian results.

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) represents the primary cause of death and disability globally, with elevated cholesterol as one of the leading risk factors for CVD. We describe the clinical characteristics, treatment patterns, and effectiveness of evolocumab in treating hyperlipidemia.

Methods: Observational study conducted through a chart review of patients with hyperlipidemia receiving evolocumab as part of clinical management in Colombia.

Associated factors for mortality in a COVID-19 colombian cohort: is the third wave relevant when Mu variant was predominant epidemiologically?

Objectives: To evaluate the association between Colombia's third wave when the Mu variant was predominant epidemiologically (until 75%) in Colombia and COVID-19 all-cause in-hospital mortality.

Methods: In this retrospective cohort, we included hospitalized patients ≥18 years with SARS-CoV-2 infection between March 2020 to September 2021 in ten hospitals from three cities in Colombia. Description analysis, survival, and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed to evaluate the association between the third epidemic wave and in-hospital mortality.

D-dimer trends elaborate the heterogeneity of risk in hospitalized patients with COVID-19: A multi-national case series from different waves.

Introduction: Variable D-dimer trends during hospitalization reportedly result in distinct in-hospital mortality. In this multinational case series from the first and second waves, we show the universality of such D-dimer trends.

Methods: We reviewed 405 patients with COVID-19 during the first wave admitted to three institutions in the United States, Italy, and Colombia, and 111 patients admitted to the U.

Neural network non-linear modeling to predict hypospadias genotype-phenotype correlation.

Introduction: Hypospadias is an abnormal development of the urethral, ventral skin and corporeal bodies. Urethral meatus and ventral curvature have been historically the landmarks to define clinical severity. Genotyping has never been explored as a clinical predictor.

Randomized double-blind clinical study in patients with COVID-19 to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a phytomedicine (P2Et).

Background: It has been proposed that polyphenols can be used in the development of new therapies against COVID-19, given their ability to interfere with the adsorption and entrance processes of the virus, thus disrupting viral replication. Seeds from , have been traditionally used for the treatment of inflammatory pathologies and respiratory diseases. Our team has obtained an extract called P2Et, rich in polyphenols derived from gallic acid with significant antioxidant activity, and the ability to induce complete autophagy in tumor cells and reduce the systemic inflammatory response in animal models.

Neglected Tropical Diseases and Sudden Cardiac Death: The NET-Heart Project.

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is responsible for approximately 6% of global mortality and 25% of cardiovascular (CV) deaths. SCD has been traditionally linked to coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathies, and genetic arrhythmia disorders. However, advancements in care for these diseases have not translated to a proportional reduction in SCD.

Venous anatomy of the lumbar region applied to anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF): Proposal of a new classification.

Background: Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) is a good alternative for the surgical treatment of lumbar degenerative disc disease. The primary vascular complications regarding this intervention involve the common iliac vein bifurcation complex (CIVC). Currently, no classification system allows defining which patients are more prone to these complications.

[Translation, validation and cultural adaptation of the SANE (Single Assessment Numeric Evaluation) in patients with shoulder pathology].

Introduction: The Single Assessment Numeric Evaluation (SANE) score is a brief method of evaluating patients' perception of the shoulder joint and has proven high correlation with other outcome measures that are more lengthy and time-consuming in daily practice. The SANE score to date has not been validated in Spanish.

Objective: To translate, adapt, and validate the SANE score in Spanish.

Relationship between internal medicine journals' activity on social networks and the citations they receive.

Background And Objectives: Social networks are a means for disseminating scientific information. Alternative metrics assessing the impact of scientific publications on social networks have been created. Our study aims to assess the correlation between the activity of internal medicine journals on social networks and traditional metrics based on citations.

Understanding the Potential Impact of Different Drug Properties on Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Transmission and Disease Burden: A Modelling Analysis.

Background: The public health impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has motivated a rapid search for potential therapeutics, with some key successes. However, the potential impact of different treatments, and consequently research and procurement priorities, have not been clear.

Methods: Using a mathematical model of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission, COVID-19 disease and clinical care, we explore the public-health impact of different potential therapeutics, under a range of scenarios varying healthcare capacity, epidemic trajectories; and drug efficacy in the absence of supportive care.

Risk factor for breast cancer development under exposure to bovine leukemia virus in Colombian women: A case-control study.

Viruses have been implicated in cancer development in both humans and animals. The role of viruses in cancer is typically to initiate cellular transformation through cellular DNA damage, although specific mechanisms remain unknown. Silent and long-term viral infections need to be present, in order to initiate cancer disease.

Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Validation of the Translated Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation Score.

 The purpose of this study is to perform a cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the translated Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE) score exclusively for pathologies of the wrist.  A methodological study of cross-cultural validation of clinical scores was performed through a test-retest reliability analysis, internal consistency, response to change, and criterion validity assessment.  The test was applied to 57 patients with 139 surveys.

Erectile dysfunction is a condition associated with increasing age. Patient evaluation and management should follow a comprehensive, stepwise approach. The aim of this article was to report our experience with the complete study for erectile dysfunction, including intracavernous injection rigidity test, biothesiometry and colour duplex Doppler ultrasound.

Standardization of penile angle estimation with a semi-automated algorithm.

Introduction: Penile curvature (PC) refers to an abnormal bending of the main longitudinal axis of the penis. It is frequently associated to hypospadias. To date, accurate and objective evaluation of PC is not easily reproducible amongst surgeons and there are no stablished protocols on how to measure PC in a standard way and in real-time to guide intraoperative decision making.

Prevalence of sensorineural hearing loss in newborns in a hospital from a developing country.

Objective: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of nonsyndromic congenital sensorineural hearing loss at the Hospital Universitario San Ignacio, Bogotá, Colombia, and to describe the risk factors associated with this condition.

Materials And Methods: A prospective, observational cross-sectional study with bivariate analysis was conducted. A three-phase process using the Otoacoustic Emissions test screened all live newborns between June 2013 and June 2014.

The clinical profiles of female patients with Fabry disease in Latin America: A Fabry Registry analysis of natural history data from 169 patients based on enzyme replacement therapy status.

Background: Fabry disease is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder with heterogeneous clinical expression in female patients ranging from asymptomatic to severe clinical presentations as in classic males. We assessed clinical profiles and compared natural history data of female patients eventually initiated on enzyme replacement therapy ("ERT-recipients") with those remaining untreated ("ERT-naïve").

Methods: We analyzed Fabry Registry data from 93 ERT-recipients, collected prior to ERT initiation, and 76 ERT-naïve females with classic or unclassified phenotypes from four Latin American countries and evaluated Fabry symptoms, interventricular septum thickness, left ventricular posterior wall thickness, estimated glomerular filtration rate, and severe clinical events.

Progressive and disseminated histoplasma infection and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis in an immunocompetent adult.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) in adults is a life-threatening underdiagnosed disorder that complicates different infectious syndromes and overlaps with sepsis. No guidelines are available for the management of HLH in adults. A high index of suspicion is required in patients with disseminated histoplasmosis.
