Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an emerging zoonotic pathogen with pigs and wild boar serving as reservoirs for human infection through direct contact with infected animals or the consumption of raw or undercooked pork products. The liver is considered the main target site of HEV replication in swine and an important organ in the pathogenesis of the disease. The aim of this study was to characterize the target liver cells for HEV entry in naturally infected wild boar and to evaluate the type and severity of the pathological changes in order to reach a better understanding of the hepatic pathogenic mechanisms involved in hepatitis E.

Schmallenberg disease is an emerging disease that affects domestic and wild ruminants in Europe. An epidemiological survey was carried out to assess exposure to Schmallenberg virus (SBV) in wild artiodactyls in Spain between 2006 and 2015. A total of 1751 sera from wild artiodactyls, including 1066 red deer, 304 fallow deer, 192 mouflon, 109 wild boar, 49 roe deer and 31 Spanish ibex were tested for antibodies against SBV by ELISA and confirmed by virus neutralization test.

Objective: To evaluate the rate of spontaneous resolution of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) infection in a cohort of HIV-infected patients.
Methods: A retrospective analysis of 509 HIV-infected patients with chronic HCV infection was performed at two reference hospitals in Andalusia. The main variable of the study was spontaneous clearance of CHC, defined as a negative HCV RNA result after at least two previous quantitative measurements of HCV RNA separated by a minimum of 12 months.

Our objective was to determine the incidence and clinical manifestations of acute hepatitis E virus (HEV) in HIV-infected patients. A prospective longitudinal study including HIV-infected HEV-seronegative patients was conducted; HEV seroconversion (to IgG and/or IgM) was the main outcome variable. All patients were tested for HEV antibodies every 3-6 months.

The fixed-dose combination therapy of sofosbuvir (SOF) plus velpatasvir (VEL) is the first pangenotypic, direct-acting antiviral (DAA), single-treatment regimen (STR) for the treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection to be commercialized. It is approved for the treatment of HCV genotypes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Following approval in 2016, new pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic data were reported, which led to important clinical applications.

Although hepatitis E virus (HEV) is regarded as a self-limiting infection and anti-HEV antibodies seem to protect against reinfection, its pathogenesis is not well established. We describe 2 cases of acute symptomatic HEV infection after hepatitis C therapy in patients carrying anti-HEV immunoglobulin G antibodies, raising 2 major questions: reactivation or reinfection?

An HIV-infected patient was diagnosed with acute hepatitis E infection in our hospital. An epidemiological inquiry was performed to collect demographic, food and animal exposure variables in order to identify the potential route of transmission. The patient reported that his family traditionally hunted wild boar for food.

Background: Our objective was to study the prognostic value of liver stiffness (LS) in HIV-infected patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC).
Methods: We analyzed HIV-infected patients with compensated CHC and at least 1 determination of LS. The primary outcome was the occurrence of liver-related events (LRE), namely, decompensation or hepatocellular carcinoma, whichever occurred first.

In April 2015, the Spanish National Health System (SNHS) developed a national strategic plan for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of hepatitis C virus (HCV). Our aim was to analyze the impact of this on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients included in the HERACLES cohort during the first 6 months of its implementation. The HERACLES cohort (NCT02511496) was set up in March 2015 to evaluate the status and follow-up of chronic HCV infection in patients co-infected with HIV in the south of Spain.

Recent findings in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) suggest that altering certain bacterial populations present in the gut may lead to a proinflammatory condition, that could result in the development of multiple sclerosis (MS). Also, Reactive Oxygen Species seem to be involved in the course of MS. In this study, it has been aimed to relate all these variables starting from an analysis of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and LPS-binding protein (LBP) with the determination of parameters related to oxidative stress in the blood, brain and spinal cord.

Background: Trastuzumab significantly improves overall survival (OS) when added to cisplatin and fluoropyrimidine as a treatment for HER2-positive advanced gastric cancers (AGC). The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of the gradual implementation of HER2 testing on patient prognosis in a national registry of AGC.
Methods: This Spanish National Cancer Registry includes cases who were consecutively recruited at 28 centers from January 2008 to January 2016.

Introduction: Knowledge of IFN-antiviral activity against HIV infection dates from the first years of the AIDS epidemic. Recombinant IFN had an inhibitory effect on HIV and was not toxic to peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), and this finding was the basis for the design of clinical trials that evaluated the potential role of IFN-alpha as an inhibitor of HIV replication.
Areas Covered: This review summarizes the history of IFN-alpha in the treatment of HIV infection with reviews of studies performed in different clinical settings; in the pre-highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) era, as part of a structured treatment interruption (STI) strategy, in acute HIV infection, as part of salvage therapy, and eliminating the HIV reservoir.
Abdominal pain conditions that fall into the category of acute abdomen (AA) are the most important ones to identify quickly. Diagnostic delay can lead to death or significant complications. Biological markers have the potential to improve the diagnostic and prognostic capacity of clinical assessment and the conventional complement of tests.

Our aim was to evaluate the killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs) as a marker for the development of thrombocytopenia secondary to Peg-interferon (IFN) therapy in a cohort of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/hepatitis C virus (HCV) co-infected patients. Patients were naive to HCV treatment, receiving a first course of Peg-IFN/Ribavirin combination therapy. Total platelet count (cells ml) was determined at each visit, determining platelet decline from baseline to weeks 1, 2, 4, 8 and 12 after starting therapy.

Introduction And Objectives: The treatment of coronary lesions with a bioresorbable vascular scaffold has been shown to be effective. However there is little information about its use in bifurcations. The aim of this study was to analyze the safety and efficacy of the bioresorbable scaffold in the treatment of coronary bifurcation lesions.

Objectives: To detect the frequency of negative outcomes associated with medication in patients with permanent atrial fibrillation (AF) who are attended in a hospital emergency department, and to assess type and severity of such outcomes related to AF medications as well as the rate of preventable negative outcomes.
Material And Methods: Descriptive, observational cross-sectional study in patients with permanent AF who were attended in the emergency department of a tertiary care hospital during a 3-month period. A pharmacist interviewed the patients to record demographic characteristics, health problems, degree of functional impairment, and current drug treatments.

Cervical cancer (CC) is the second most common cancer worldwide, strongly linked to high-risk human papilloma virus infection. Although screening programs have led to a relevant reduction in the incidence and mortality due to CC in developed countries, it is still an important cause of mortality in undeveloped countries. Clinical stage is still the most relevant prognostic factor.
