Endoscopy is vital for detecting and diagnosing gastrointestinal diseases. Systematic examination protocols are key to enhancing detection, particularly for the early identification of premalignant conditions. Publicly available endoscopy image databases are crucial for machine learning research, yet challenges persist, particularly in identifying upper gastrointestinal anatomical landmarks to ensure effective and precise endoscopic procedures.

Candidemia is the predominant form of invasive candidiasis and the most frequently occurring serious fungal infection in critically ill patients in Intensive Care Units (ICU). Studies carried out in Latin America reveal a higher incidence of candidemia and higher mortality rates when compared to North America or Europe. This highlights the need to develop guidelines for correctly diagnosing and treating candidemia in critically ill patients in the ICU.

This manuscript reports the case of a 75-year-old patient presenting with a collision tumor consisting of a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor and intra-ampullary adenocarcinoma, which manifested with obstructive jaundice and was treated with primary surgical cytoreduction. Additionally, a bibliographic search of original articles was performed in the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE; via PubMed) and the Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences (LILACS) databases to review the literature on pancreaticobiliary collision tumors. Currently, information regarding pancreatic and bile duct collision tumors is limited due to their very low incidence.

Article Synopsis
  • Colon cancer is a significant health issue in Colombia, being the third most common cancer and surpassing gastric cancer in incidence rates.
  • A national study analyzed data from 2012-2017 to explore the link between the volume of surgeries performed at hospitals and patient mortality rates post-surgery.
  • Results revealed that patients at high-volume hospitals had a significantly lower risk of dying within 30 days after surgery, although this effect did not extend to one-year mortality rates.

December 2024

Division of Otolaryngology, Department of Surgery, Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogota, Colombia; Department of Otolaryngology, Hospital Universitario Nacional. de Colombia, Bogotá, Colombia; Otologist and neurotologist, Department of Otolaryngology, Hospital Universitario Nacional. de Colombia, Bogotá, Colombia.

Article Synopsis
  • - The retrosigmoid approach (RSA) is effective for treating vestibular schwannomas while aiming to preserve hearing, but careful dissection is necessary to avoid damaging surrounding structures in the cerebellopontine angle.
  • - This study aimed to establish reference values for the endolymphatic sac and duct (ELSD) to safely expose the internal auditory canal (IAC) during surgery.
  • - Findings revealed consistent distances between the ELSD and the acoustic pore across specimens, but significant variability in measurements related to the jugular foramen, indicating a need for caution in surgical approaches.

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is an important procedure for nutrition delivery, and one that is often associated with complications. The formation of granulation tissue or periostomal granuloma is a chronic minor complication associated with gastrostomy, being more frequent in geriatric patients, but the therapeutic experience in pediatric patients is better known. We present the case of a 94-year-old female patient, diagnosed with Alzheimer's dementia with severe motor and cognitive impairment, who presents significant malnutrition and severe dysphagia.

  • MRI is essential for diagnosing and monitoring multiple sclerosis (MS), but standard scans often have limited resolution due to thick slices, which affects automated analysis.
  • This study introduces a single-image super-resolution (SR) reconstruction framework using convolutional neural networks (CNN) to enhance MRI resolution in individuals with MS.
  • The results show that the SR method significantly improves MRI reconstruction accuracy and lesion segmentation, making it a valuable tool for analyzing low-resolution MRI data in clinical settings.

Background: Pompe disease, a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by acid alpha-glucosidase deficiency, results in progressive glycogen accumulation and multisystem dysfunction. Enzyme replacement therapy with recombinant human acid alpha-glucosidase is the standard of care; however, some patients develop anti-recombinant human acid alpha-glucosidase antibodies, leading to reduced efficacy. This case report presents two infants with early-onset Pompe disease who developed IgG antibodies to enzyme replacement therapy and were subsequently treated with methotrexate, highlighting the importance of monitoring antibody development and exploring alternative therapeutic approaches.

Leveraging a realistic synthetic database to learn Shape-from-Shading for estimating the colon depth in colonoscopy images.

Comput Med Imaging Graph

July 2024

Unité d'Informatique et d'Ingénierie des Systémes (U2IS), ENSTA Paris, Institut Polytechnique de Paris, Palaiseau, 91762, Ile de France, France.

Colonoscopy is the choice procedure to diagnose, screening, and treat the colon and rectum cancer, from early detection of small precancerous lesions (polyps), to confirmation of malign masses. However, the high variability of the organ appearance and the complex shape of both the colon wall and structures of interest make this exploration difficult. Learned visuospatial and perceptual abilities mitigate technical limitations in clinical practice by proper estimation of the intestinal depth.
