Inflammatory bowel disease: The role of commensal microbiome in immune regulation.

The incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is increasing. Microbiome is one of the most important factors in its development and affects the different clinical outcomes of IBD patients depending on its composition and different alterations. We conducted a systematic review to discuss the association between microbiome and IBD in terms of immune regulation, and therapies that can modify microbiota.

An international perspective on hospitalized patients with viral community-acquired pneumonia.

Background: Who should be tested for viruses in patients with community acquired pneumonia (CAP), prevalence and risk factors for viral CAP are still debated. We evaluated the frequency of viral testing, virus prevalence, risk factors and treatment coverage with oseltamivir in patients admitted for CAP.

Methods: Secondary analysis of GLIMP, an international, multicenter, point-prevalence study of hospitalized adults with CAP.

Huntington's disease-like disorders in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Diseases with a choreic phenotype can be due to a variety of genetic etiologies. As testing for Huntington's disease (HD) becomes more available in previously resource-limited regions, it is becoming apparent that there are patients in these areas with other rare genetic conditions which cause an HD-like phenotype. Documentation of the presence of these conditions is important in order to provide appropriate diagnostic and clinical care for these populations.

[Epidemiology of dermatosis in geriatric patients].

Objective: To describe and compare the skin diseases in elderly attended at the geriatric service with those attended at the dermatology service.

Methods: The study was carried out on 100 elderly patients attended at the geriatrics service of nonskin disease and 100 elderly patients attended at the dermatology service. The sampling was of consecutive cases.

[Extragonadal germ cell tumor in mediastinum: case report].

The Germ Cell tumors of extragonadal origin are infrequent cases being described in literature less than 1000 cases. The frequent origin sites are mediastinum, retroperitoneum, sacrococcygeal region, and the pineal gland. There was a primary case of germinoma in mediastinum in a 27 years patient.

Dermabrasion in xeroderma pigmentosum.

Background: Dermabrasion is one choice of treatment for patients with severe actinic damage.

Objective: To report the youngest xeroderma pigmentosum patient ot have received the benefits of this procedure.

Methods: The dermabrasion was performed under general anesthesia using an acrotorque hand engine.
