Mild behavioral impairment in the general population aged 55+ and its association with incident dementia.

Alzheimers Dement (Amst)

October 2024

Departamento de Medicina, Psiquiatría y Dermatología, Facultad de Medicina Universidad de Zaragoza Zaragoza Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the link between mild behavioral impairment (MBI) and dementia risk in older adults, following 4,803 individuals over 4.5 years.
  • It found that in cognitively normal participants, decreased motivation—an MBI domain—was linked to a significantly increased risk of all-cause dementia.
  • The researchers suggest decreased motivation might indicate a higher dementia risk, but more studies are needed to explore the relationship between MBI and various types of dementia.

Methods: A retrospective, observational and analytical study of hospitalized neonates who developed PPL secondary to O2 devices in the NICU of the Miguel Servet University Hospital of Zaragoza was carried out.

Objective: Acute confusional syndrome (ACS) is one of the complications with the highest morbidity and mortality in hospitalization units, but it is a reversible situation if detected early, representing a clear challenge for nursing. The objectives of this study were to assess the interventions carried out by nurses for the identification and non-pharmacological preventive measures applied in acute confusional syndrome and relate them to the years of professional experience and training received.

Methods: A quasi-experimental, prospective and analytical study was carried out through a self-administered structured questionnaire pre-post intervention (extracted from the JBI PACES program-Practical Application of Clinical Evidence System) on the identification and preventive measures applied in ACS.

[Monkeypox and men who have sex with men: we need to treat it with a destigmatizing perspective.].

Rev Esp Salud Publica

July 2023

Programa de Doctorado en Ciencias de la Salud y del Deporte; Universidad de Zaragoza. Zaragoza. España.

Monkeypox is a zoonosis, which is transmitted by direct and close contact, and has recently produced a large epidemic outbreak in non-endemic areas, classified as a Public Health Emergency of international concern by the World Health Organization. The global doubting and delayed response, and the stigmatizing approach to men who have sex with men promoted by public opinion, some scientists, socio-political agents, and the media, could be some of the reasons why the epidemic has not yet been contained. The stigma around the disease produces severe injuries to its victims and obstructs actions aimed at controlling the disease, as occurred with HIV in the past.

Objectives: To describe the sociodemographic characteristics, comorbidity, and baseline functional status of patients aged 65 or older who came to hospital emergency departments (EDs) during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, and to compare them with the findings for an earlier period to analyze factors of the index episode that were related to mortality.

Material And Methods: We studied data from the EDEN-COVID cohort (Emergency Department and Elder Needs During COVID-19) of patients aged 65 years or older treated in 40 Spanish EDs on 7 consecutive days.
