The C242T polymorphism of CYBA (cytochrome B-245 alpha chain), the gene encoding the p22phox subunit of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase, has been linked to several conditions in which oxidative stress plays a pathogenic role. We investigated in a cohort of 451 preterm infants [gestational age (GA) ≤30 weeks] the association of the polymorphism with the risk of developing neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), necrotizing enterocolitis, patent ductus arteriosus, or intraventricular hemorrhage. We observed a significant association of the TT/CT genotype with RDS [odds ratio (OR) 2.

Objective: A high ratio of soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1) to placental growth factor (PlGF) has been linked to pre-eclampsia (PE). We evaluated the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio as a predictive marker for early-onset PE in women at risk of PE.
Methods: This prospective, Spanish, multicenter study included pregnant women with a risk factor for PE, including intrauterine growth restriction, PE, eclampsia or hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelet count syndrome in previous pregnancy, pregestational diabetes or abnormal uterine artery Doppler.

The p.Thr1406Asn (rs1047891) polymorphism of the carbamoyl-phosphate synthetase 1 (CPS1) gene has been linked to functional consequences affecting the downstream availability of the nitric oxide precursor L-arginine. L-arginine concentrations are decreased in preterm infants with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC).

Background: The clinical presentation of patients with organic acidurias (OAD) and urea cycle disorders (UCD) is variable; symptoms are often non-specific.
Aims/methods: To improve the knowledge about OAD and UCD the E-IMD consortium established a web-based patient registry.
Results: We registered 795 patients with OAD (n = 452) and UCD (n = 343), with ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency (n = 196), glutaric aciduria type 1 (GA1; n = 150) and methylmalonic aciduria (MMA; n = 149) being the most frequent diseases.

Endogenously produced inhibitors of nitric oxide (NO) synthase, in particular asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), are currently considered of importance in various disease states characterized by reduced NO availability. We investigated the association between plasma levels of ADMA, symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA), L-arginine, and citrulline and perinatal factors and outcome in 130 preterm (gestational age ≤ 30 weeks) very low birth weight (VLBW, < 1500 g) infants. Plasma samples were collected 6-12 h after birth.

Few studies have tested the efficacy of commercially available cosmetic products for preventing striae gravidarum. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate efficacy on prevention of striae gravidarum using a specific anti-stretch mark cream containing hydroxyprolisilane-C, rosehip oil, Centella asiatica triterpenes and vitamin E. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted between November 2009 and April 2011.

We conducted a prospective observational study of 306 asymptomatic women at 20-22 weeks of pregnancy to compare 3-dimensional ultrasound measurements of cervical volume with 2-dimensional ultrasound measurements of cervical length to evaluate the performance of cervical volume as a predictor of pre-term delivery, compared with the current standard, cervical length. Participants underwent transvaginal ultrasound measurements of cervical length (mm) and cervical volume (cm(3)). Cervical volume as measured by 3-dimensional ultrasound was found to be a useful tool for predicting pre-term delivery; however, due to the high correlation between cervical length and cervical volume and the lack of differences in the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and relative risk between the two methods, replacing cervical length measurements with cervical volume calculations does not seem to be justified for this purpose, because of increased difficulty in volume acquisition.

Vulvar cancer is a rare malignancy; most tumors are squamous cell type while adenocarcinomas are rare. Primary adenocarcinomas of the vulva predominantly include extramammary Paget's disease and sweat gland carcinomas. Greene first described a rare form of adenocarcinoma in 1936, which was called adenocarcinoma of mammary-like glands of the vulva because of its morphologic and immunohistochemical resemblance to breast adenocarcinomas.

Background: Excessive hand sweating, known as palmar hyperhidrosis, is a disabling disorder that starts during the childhood, and can have a strong negative impact on the quality of life of affected children, as they feel rejected by others due to their permanently damp hands, suffering during school activities, contact sports and daily games.
Material And Methods: Thoracoscopic sympathicolysis is easy to perform and has proven to be safe, with a short operating time. A review was performed on 48 children who underwent surgical treatment of palmar hyperhidrosis and answered a follow-up questionnaire to evaluate their level of satisfaction.
Since Coffey described in 1910 the Uretero-sigmoidostomy, the first auto-continent urinary derivation, many techniques have been developed and used for bladder augmentation, although none of them has been considered fully satisfactory. The availability of a product made of a bovine collagen and glycosaminoglycan base, used for regenerating dermis and oral mucosa induced us to start this study on rabbit bladder in order to verify if muscular fibers might grow in its interior. For that purpose we used 6 New Zealand rabbits, to which we implanted a fragment of artificial dermis inside the detrusor after dissecting it.

We present our experience in the use of Hydrosurgery with debridement of necrotic tissues from skin wounds in children. The Hydrosurgery system uses a high velocity stream of sterile saline solution, which can be controlled according to the state of the lesion. We have used this system in 15 patients suffering from a wide range of pathologies (burns, severe traumatic wounds, skin necrosis etc), achieving its complete resolution in shorter period of time.

We studied the putative relaxant effects of several isoprostanes (8-iso-PGE1, and 8-iso-PGE2, 8-iso-PGF1alpha, 8-iso-PGF1beta, 8-iso-PGF2alpha, and 8-iso-PGF2beta) on pulmonary (PA), mesenteric (MA), coronary (CA) arteries and pulmonary veins (PV), from newborn and 2-week-old piglets. Isoprostanes were compared with agonists of the EP (PGE1, PGE2, and misoprostol), DP (PGD2), and IP (iloprost) receptors. Isoprostane-induced relaxation was only observed when TP receptors were occupied (by U46619) or blocked (by SQ 29,548).
