Cancer therapy-related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD), which commonly includes left ventricular dysfunction and heart failure, is the main adverse effect of anticancer therapy. In recent years several candidate genes studies and genome-wide association studies have identified common genetic variants associated with CTRCD, but evidence remains limited and few genetic variants are robust. A genome-wide meta-analysis of CTRCD was performed with 852 oncology patients receiving cancer therapy.

Vaccination with transiently activated replication-competent controlled herpesviruses (RCCVs) expressing influenza A virus hemagglutinins broadly protects mice against lethal influenza virus challenges. The non-replicating RCCVs can be activated to transiently replicate with high efficiency. Activation involves a brief heat treatment to the epidermal administration site in the presence of a drug.

System Dynamics (SD) models have been used to understand complex, multi-faceted dengue transmission dynamics, but a gap persists between research and actionable public health tools for decision-making. Spain is an at-risk country of imported dengue outbreaks, but only qualitative assessments are available to guide public health action and control. We propose a modular SD model combining temperature-dependent vector population, transmission parameters, and epidemiological interactions to simulate outbreaks from imported cases accounting for heterogeneous local climate-related transmission patterns.

  • This study evaluates chromosomal abnormalities in fetuses with nuchal translucency (NT) measurements between 3.0 and 3.4 mm, which are often missed by non-invasive prenatal testing (cfDNA).
  • A review of data from 271 fetuses revealed that 18.8% had chromosomal aberrations, with significant findings including common trisomies in 15% of cases and a small percentage involving sex chromosome aneuploidy.
  • The research suggests that many fetuses at increased risk for chromosomal issues due to NT measurements may require invasive testing, as NIPT has limitations that could lead to false negatives.

A universal vaccine that generally prevents influenza virus infection and/or illness remains elusive. We have been exploring a novel approach to vaccination involving replication-competent controlled herpesviruses (RCCVs) that can be deliberately activated to replicate efficiently but only transiently in an administration site in the skin of a subject. The RCCVs are derived from a virulent wild-type herpesvirus strain that has been engineered to contain a heat shock promoter-based gene switch that controls the expression of, typically, two replication-essential viral genes.

The evolutionary conserved miR-137/325 tandem mediates obesity-induced hypogonadism and metabolic comorbidities by repressing hypothalamic kisspeptin.

Metabolism

August 2024

Instituto Maimónides de Investigación Biomédica de Córdoba (IMIBIC), Córdoba, Spain; Department of Cell Biology, Physiology and Immunology, University of Córdoba, Cordoba, Spain; Hospital Universitario Reina Sofía, Córdoba, Spain; CIBER Fisiopatología de la Obesidad y Nutrición (CIBEROBN), Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Córdoba, Spain. Electronic address:

Background: Obesity-induced hypogonadism (OIH) is a prevalent, but often neglected condition in men, which aggravates the metabolic complications of overweight. While hypothalamic suppression of Kiss1-encoded kisspeptin has been suggested to contribute to OIH, the molecular mechanisms for such repression in obesity, and the therapeutic implications thereof, remain unknown.

Methods: A combination of bioinformatic, expression and functional analyses was implemented, assessing the role of the evolutionary-conserved miRNAs, miR-137 and miR-325, in mediating obesity-induced suppression of hypothalamic kisspeptin, as putative mechanism of central hypogonadism and metabolic comorbidities.
