: Radiculopathy leads to pain, consequently reducing patient's quality of life (QoL). Research indicates that certain nucleotides, such as cytidine and uridine, along with vitamins B1 and B12, may help alleviate pain and enhance QoL. This study assessed the impact of adding a supplement containing cytidine and uridine nucleotides and vitamins B1 and B12, alongside standard treatment, on radiculopathy-associated pain.

  • * A study analyzed immune parameters in 927 psychiatric inpatients, revealing that those who tested positive for these substances had notably higher white blood cell (WBC) counts and other immune markers than those with negative tests.
  • * The results indicated that cannabinoid users experienced a significant increase in neutrophils, while cocaine users showed heightened eosinophil counts, suggesting that different substances may uniquely influence immune responses in individuals with psychiatric disorders.

Unidad Clínica de Enfermedades Infecciosas y Microbiología, Departamento de Medicina, Instituto de Biomedicina de Sevilla (IBiS)/CSIC, Hospital Universitario Virgen Macarena, Universidad de Sevilla, Seville, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study reclassified Klebsiella aerogenes into the Klebsiella genus and aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes of bloodstream infections (BSI) caused by K. aerogenes compared to K. pneumoniae and Enterobacter cloacae.
  • - Researchers analyzed data from hospitalized patients with monomicrobial BSI from October 2016 to March 2017, using various outcomes to compare the infections, including mortality and recurrence rates within 30 days.
  • - Findings indicated that K. aerogenes infections had a lower frequency of mortality or recurrence (6.9%) compared to E. cloacae (20.8%) and K. pneumoniae (19.0%), suggesting a potentially better

Background: Intensive lipid-lowering therapy may induce coronary atherosclerosis regression. Nevertheless, the factors underlying the effect of lipid-lowering therapy on disease regression remain poorly characterized. Our aim was to determine which characteristics of atherosclerotic plaque are associated with a greater reduction in coronary plaque burden (PB) after treatment with alirocumab in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia.

Introduction: Teriflunomide is a once-daily oral immunomodulator approved for relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) or relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS; depending on the local label), based on extensive evidence from clinical trials and a real-world setting on efficacy, tolerability and patient-reported benefits. The TERICARE study assessed the impact of teriflunomide treatment over 2 years on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and some of the most common and disabling symptoms of MS, such as fatigue and depression.

Methods: This prospective observational study in Spain included RRMS patients treated with teriflunomide for ≤ 4 weeks.

In an effort to standardize perioperative management and improve postoperative outcomes of adult patients undergoing surgery, the Ministry of Health, through the Spanish Multimodal Rehabilitation Group (GERM), and the Aragonese Institute of Health Sciences, in collaboration with multiple Spanish scientific societies and based on the available evidence, published in 2021 the Spanish Intensified Adult Recovery (RICA) guideline. This document includes 12 perioperative measures related to fluid therapy and hemodynamic monitoring. Fluid administration and hemodynamic monitoring are not straightforward but are directly related to postoperative patient outcomes.

Background: Research in fluid therapy and perioperative hemodynamic monitoring is difficult and expensive. The objectives of this study were to summarize these topics and to prioritize these topics in order of research importance.

Methods: Electronic structured Delphi questionnaire over three rounds among 30 experts in fluid therapy and hemodynamic monitoring identified through the Fluid Therapy and Hemodynamic Monitoring Subcommittee of the Hemostasis, Transfusion Medicine and Fluid Therapy Section of the Spanish Society of Anesthesiology and Critical Care.

Background: The effect of alirocumab, a PCSK9 (proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9) inhibitor, on coronary plaque burden in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia has not been addressed. Our aim was to assess changes in coronary plaque burden and its characteristics after treatment with alirocumab by quantification and characterization of atherosclerotic plaque throughout the coronary tree on the basis of a noninvasive analysis of coronary computed tomographic angiography in asymptomatic subjects with familial hypercholesterolemia receiving optimized and stable treatment with maximum tolerated statin dose with or without ezetimibe.

Methods: This study is a phase IV, open-label, multicenter, single-arm clinical trial to assess changes in coronary plaque burden and its characteristics after 78 weeks of treatment with alirocumab in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia without clinical atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of TNF inhibitors (adalimumab and infliximab) versus tocilizumab in treating refractory cystoid macular edema associated with Behçet’s disease.
  • A multicenter analysis included 49 patients with cystoid macular edema who had already undergone other treatments; they were tracked for changes in macular thickness, visual acuity, and inflammation over four years.
  • Results showed that all treatment options led to improvements in macular thickness and visual acuity, with tocilizumab still being effective for patients who did not respond to TNF inhibitors.

The clinical course of COVID-19 is highly variable. It is therefore essential to predict as early and accurately as possible the severity level of the disease in a COVID-19 patient who is admitted to the hospital. This means identifying the contributing factors of mortality and developing an easy-to-use score that could enable a fast assessment of the mortality risk using only information recorded at the hospitalization.

Unravelling the Inflammatory Processes in the Early Stages of Diabetic Nephropathy and the Potential Effect of ()-DS-ONJ.

Int J Mol Sci

July 2022

Unidad de Investigación, Instituto de Investigación e Innovación en Ciencias Biomédicas de la Provincia de Cádiz (INiBICA), 11009 Cádiz, Spain.

Inflammatory processes play a central role in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy (DN) in the early stages of the disease. The authors demonstrate that the glycolipid mimetic ()-DS-ONJ is able to abolish inflammation via the induction of autophagy flux and provokes the inhibition of inflammasome complex in ex vivo and in vitro models, using adult kidney explants from BB rats. The contribution of ()-DS-ONJ to reducing inflammatory events is mediated by the inhibition of classical stress kinase pathways and the blocking of inflammasome complex activation.
