Introduction: Anti-glomerular basement membrane (anti-GBM) disease is a severe entity with few therapeutic options including plasma exchange and immunosuppressive agents. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical and pathological features that predict the evolution of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) and the kidney survival in a cohort of patients with anti-GBM disease with renal involvement in real life.

Methods: A retrospective multicentre observational study including 72 patients from 18 nephrology departments with biopsy-proven anti-GBM disease from 1999 to 2019 was performed.

Article Synopsis
  • - Lung cancer survival rates in Spain have improved by about 15% in the last decade, largely due to advancements in targeted therapies and immunotherapy, prompting a study on biomarker testing in the country.
  • - The study analyzed 9,239 patients with stage IV non-small cell lung cancer from 2016 to 2020, revealing that 85% of non-squamous patients underwent tumor marker testing, compared to 56.3% of squamous patients, with high positivity rates observed for key biomarkers.
  • - Although Spain lacks a national protocol for biomarker testing, the findings align with trends in other European nations, highlighting the need for standardized strategies to optimize patient care amidst increasing numbers of determinations and positive results.*

Background And Aims: In order to facilitate the preoperative prediction of complicated appendicitis, we propose a complementary approach by selecting an endpoint defined by the intraoperative finding of peritoneal soiling (PS).

Methods: Over a 6-month period, 38 centers (5% of all public hospitals) attending emergency general surgery patients on a 24-h, 7-days a week basis, enrolled consecutive adult patients requiring appendectomy. Patients were stratified according to the absence or the finding of PS during the surgical procedure.

Background: Targeted inhibition of the PD-L1-PD-1 pathway might be further amplified through combination of PD-1 or PD-L1 inhibitors with novel anti-TIGIT inhibitory immune checkpoint agents, such as tiragolumab. In the CITYSCAPE trial, we aimed to assess the preliminary efficacy and safety of tiragolumab plus atezolizumab (anti-PD-L1) therapy as first-line treatment for non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Methods: CITYSCAPE is a phase 2, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

Purpose: To examine the response to anti-osteoporotic treatment, considered as incident fragility fractures after a minimum follow-up of 1 year, according to sex, age, and number of comorbidities of the patients.

Methods: For this retrospective observational study, data from baseline and follow-up visits on the number of comorbidities, prescribed anti-osteoporotic treatment and vertebral, humerus or hip fractures in 993 patients from the OSTEOMED registry were analyzed using logistic regression and an artificial network model.

Results: Logistic regression showed that the probability of reducing fractures for each anti-osteoporotic treatment considered was independent of sex, age, and the number of comorbidities, increasing significantly only in males taking vitamin D (OR = 7.

Background: At present, we did not find any articles that studied seroprevalence and its persistence several months later in lung cancer patients in the setting of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Most patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) go on to develop antibodies (Abs) against viral proteins. However, it is not known how long these Abs last nor whether cancer treatments could affect the duration of immune response.

Background/objectives: Factors associated with chronic heart failure (CHF) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have received little attention. Recent data on the use of hydroxychloroquine in the treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infection have cast doubt on its cardiac safety. The factors associated with CHF, including therapy with antimalarials, were analyzed in a large multicenter SLE cohort.

Objectives: To study the influence of sternal transection and costal chondrotomies on the stiffness and stresses in the rib cage of adult patients undergoing Nuss pectus excavatum procedure.

Methods: Four pectus excavatum models with different Haller indexes were created by parameterizing a 3D model of a rib cage obtained based on a computed tomography scan of a patient with no pectus deformity. Using the finite element method, insertion of intrathoracic bars into all models was simulated in 3 conditions, namely, non-intervened, transverse sternal section and costal chondrotomies.

Servicio de Cardiología, Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre, Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria Hospital 12 de Octubre (imas12), Madrid, Spain; Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Enfermedades Cardiovasculares (CIBERCV), Spain; Facultad de Medicina, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Madrid, Spain.

Introduction And Objectives: HeartLogic is a multiparametric algorithm incorporated into implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD). The associated alerts predict impending heart failure (HF) decompensations. Our objective was to analyze the association between alerts and clinical events and to describe the implementation of a protocol for remote management in a multicenter registry.

Background And Aims: Emergency General Surgery (EGS) conditions account for millions of deaths worldwide, yet it is practiced without benchmarking-based quality improvement programs. The aim of this observational, prospective, multicenter, nationwide study was to determine the best benchmark cutoff points in EGS, as a reference to guide improvement measures.

Methods: Over a 6-month period, 38 centers (5% of all public hospitals) attending EGS patients on a 24-h, 7-days a week basis, enrolled consecutive patients requiring an emergent/urgent surgical procedure.

Background: The optimal endovascular treatment (EVT) technique for middle cerebral artery (MCA) M2 segment occlusions remains unknown. We aim to analyze whether reperfusion rate, procedure times, procedure-related complications, and clinical outcome differed between patients with isolated M2 occlusions who underwent stent-retriever (SR) alone versus combined SR and contact aspiration (CA) as a front-line EVT.

Methods: Patients who underwent EVT for isolated MCA-M2 occlusion were recruited from the prospectively ongoing ROSSETTI registry.

Many surgical techniques have been used to address unstable distal third clavicle fractures. Complications and the need for hardware removal are still a concern. We propose a surgical technical using high-strength sutures to restore vertical and horizontal stability in Neer type II and Neer type V distal-third clavicle fractures.

This network meta-analysis (NMA) evaluates the safety of first-line programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) inhibitor monotherapy in advanced NSCLC patients compared to platinum-based chemotherapy. We also compared the risk of adverse events (AEs) according to programmed cell death-1 receptor (PD-1) or PD-L1 inhibitors therapy. To that end, we conducted a series of metanalyses (MAs) using data from six phase III clinical trials, including 4053 patients.

Background: There is a lack of useful diagnostic tools to identify EGFR mutated NSCLC patients with long-term survival. This study develops a prognostic model using real world data to assist clinicians to predict survival beyond 24 months.

Methods: EGFR mutated stage IIIB and IV NSCLC patients diagnosed between January 2009 and December 2017 included in the Spanish Lung Cancer Group (SLCG) thoracic tumor registry.

Background: Balloon guide catheter (BGC) in stent retriever based thrombectomy (BGC+SR) for patients with large vessel occlusion strokes (LVOS) improves outcomes. It is conceivable that the addition of a large bore distal access catheter (DAC) to BGC+SR leads to higher efficacy. We aimed to investigate whether the combined BGC+DAC+SR approach improves angiographic and clinical outcomes compared with BGC+SR alone for thrombectomy in anterior circulation LVOS.
