Background: Among patients with resectable early-stage non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), a perioperative approach that includes both neoadjuvant and adjuvant immune checkpoint inhibition may provide benefit beyond either approach alone.

Methods: We conducted a randomized, double-blind, phase 3 trial to evaluate perioperative pembrolizumab in patients with early-stage NSCLC. Participants with resectable stage II, IIIA, or IIIB (N2 stage) NSCLC were assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive neoadjuvant pembrolizumab (200 mg) or placebo once every 3 weeks, each of which was given with cisplatin-based chemotherapy for 4 cycles, followed by surgery and adjuvant pembrolizumab (200 mg) or placebo once every 3 weeks for up to 13 cycles.

Introduction: There is currently no validated score capable of classifying cancer-associated pulmonary embolism (PE) in its full spectrum of severity. This study has validated the EPIPHANY Index, a new tool to predict serious complications in cancer patients with suspected or unsuspected PE.

Method: The PERSEO Study prospectively recruited individuals with PE and active cancer or receiving antineoplastic therapy from 22 Spanish hospitals.

Early-stage lung cancer is crucial clinically due to its insidious nature and rapid progression. Most of the prediction models designed to predict tumour recurrence in the early stage of lung cancer rely on the clinical or medical history of the patient. However, their performance could likely be improved if the input patient data contained genomic information.

Predictive factors of destination at discharge after spinal cord injury.

June 2024

Área de Estadística e Investigación Operativa del Departamento de Matemáticas de la Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Las Palmas, Spain.

Introduction: One of the main goals of the rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) is the reintegration of the individual to their family, social, and work setting. The objective of this study was to identify the factors that determine the discharge destination after a traumatic spinal cord injury.

Material And Methods: We conducted a retrospective descriptive study of 305 patients with SCI who completed the rehabilitation treatment at the spinal injury unit of Hospital Insular de Gran Canaria between 2001 and 2018.

BRAF and MEK inhibitor, dabrafenib plus trametinib, adjuvant therapy is effective for high-risk resected melanoma patients with BRAF - V600 mutations. However, real-world evidence is limited. We aimed to determine the feasibility of this therapy in routine clinical practice.

infection is generally asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic, but in the immunosuppressed host, it is associated with more severe and complicated forms with a worse prognosis. seroprevalence was studied in 256 patients before receiving immunosuppressive treatment (before kidney transplantation or starting biological treatments). As a control group, serum bank data of 642 individuals representative of the population of the Canary Islands were retrospectively analyzed.

The hematoma block is not enough as method of anesthesia in reduction of displaced distal radius fractures.

Rev Esp Cir Ortop Traumatol

March 2023

Servicio de Cirugía Ortopédica y Traumatología, Hospital Universitario Insular de Gran Canaria, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, España; Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, España. Electronic address:

Background: Two out of three wrist fractures seen in the emergency are displaced but most can be treated conservatively after closed reduction. Patient-reported pain during closed reduction of distal radius fractures varies widely and the best method to decrease the perceived pain has not been well established. The purpose of this study was to assess the pain during closed reduction of distal radius fractures after using the hematoma block as method of anaesthesia.

Introduction: Combined stent-retriever/large-bore distal aspiration catheter (LB-DAC) thrombectomy was recently introduced to treat large-vessel occlusion; however, it is unclear whether larger inner diameters improve outcomes. We compared angiographic and clinical outcomes in patients with occlusions of the M1 segment of the middle cerebral artery treated with mechanical thrombectomy using extra-LB-DAC versus LB-DAC in combination with stent-retrievers.

Methods: We analyzed consecutive patients with M1 occlusion included in the ROSSETTI registry treated with non-balloon guide catheter combined LB-DAC/stent-retriever thrombectomy between June 2019 and April 2022.

Outbreak strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis are promising candidates as targets in the search for intrinsic determinants of transmissibility, as they are responsible for many cases with sustained transmission; however, the use of low-resolution typing methods and restricted geographical investigations represent flaws in assessing the success of long-lived outbreak strains. We can now address the nature of outbreak strains by combining large genomic data sets and phylodynamic approaches. We retrospectively sequenced the whole genome of representative samples assigned to an outbreak circulating in the Canary Islands (the GC strain) since 1993, which accounts for ~20% of local tuberculosis cases.

In patients with previously treated advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), atezolizumab therapy improves survival with manageable safety. The open-label, single-arm phase III/IV TAIL study (NCT03285763) evaluated atezolizumab monotherapy in patients with previously treated NSCLC, including those with Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 2, severe renal impairment, prior anti-programmed death 1 therapy, autoimmune disease, and age ≥75 years. Patients received atezolizumab intravenously (1200 mg) every 3 weeks.

Background: Current frequency and risk factors for sensitization to methylisothiazolinone (MI), methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone (MCI/MI), benzisothiazolinone (BIT) and octylisothiazolinone (OIT) in Spain are not well known.

Objectives: To study the frequency of sensitization, risk factors and simultaneous sensitization between the four isothiazolinones.

Materials And Methods: We analysed all 2019-2021 consecutive patients patch-tested with MI (0.

Congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (CHH) is a rare disease caused by deficiency or action of gonadotropin-releasing hormone. While generally considered a long-life condition, CHH can be reversible in about 5%-20% of cases, but mechanisms of reversibility are unknown. We report the case of a male with CHH who began treatment with low dose (20 mg/day) transdermal testosterone to induce pubertal development at age 17.

Background: The clinical and epidemiological data of the recent outbreak of monkeypox (MPX) differ from previous reports. One difference is the epidemiological profile; the disease mainly affects a subgroup of MSM (men who have sex with men) with high-risk sexual behaviors, frequently persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLHIV).

Methods: In this observational analysis, all patients with PCR (polymerase chain reaction)-confirmed MPX attending an Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine Unit in Gran Canaria (Spain) between May and July 2022 were considered.

Background: Neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has improved pathological responses and survival rates compared with chemotherapy alone, leading to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of nivolumab plus chemotherapy for resectable stage IB-IIIA NSCLC (AJCC 7th edition) without ALK or EGFR alterations. Unfortunately, a considerable percentage of tumors do not completely respond to therapy, which has been associated with early disease progression. So far, it is impossible to predict these events due to lack of knowledge.

Several variants of concern (VOCs) explain most of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) epidemic waves in Europe. We aimed to dissect the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 VOCs in the Canary Islands (Spain) between December 2020 and September 2021 at a micro-geographical level. We sequenced the viral genome of 8,224 respiratory samples collected in the archipelago.
