Background: The aim of this multicentre study was to analyse the outcomes of biosynthetic absorbable poly-4-hydroxybutyrate (P4HB) prosthesis implantation in patients undergoing ventral hernia repair (VHR) in the context of different degrees of contamination.

Methods: From May 2016 to December 2021, a multicentre retrospective analysis of patients who underwent elective or urgent hernia repair with P4HB prosthesis was performed in seven hospitals in Spain and Portugal. Patients with a postoperative follow-up of less than 20 months and those within the theoretical period of prosthesis resorption were excluded from the study.

Unlabelled: In December 2022, an alert was published in the UK and other European countries reporting an unusual increase in the incidence of infections. Our aim was to describe the clinical, microbiological, and molecular characteristics of group A invasive infections (iGAS) in children prospectively recruited in Spain (September 2022-March 2023), and compare invasive strains with strains causing mild infections. One hundred thirty isolates of causing infection (102 iGAS and 28 mild infections) were included in the microbiological study: typing, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and sequencing for core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST), resistome, and virulome analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • A study evaluated the differences in clinical presentation and surgical outcomes between two types of pituitary adenomas: growth hormone secreting (GH-PAs) and those that cosecrete growth hormone and prolactin (GH&PRL-PAs).
  • GH&PRL-PAs were found to occur more frequently as macroadenomas, had a lower average age at diagnosis, and were more likely to show signs of invasiveness and hypopituitarism compared to GH-PAs.
  • Despite these differences in presentation, both groups had similar rates of surgical success in terms of biochemical cure, although GH&PRL-PA patients experienced a higher incidence of permanent arginine-vasopressin deficiency

Introduction And Objectives: Cataract surgery is one of the most common procedures in outpatient surgery units. The use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in clinical practice and the advent of new health scenarios, such as the Covid pandemic, have driven the development of pre-anaesthesia assessment models that free up resources to improve access to cataract surgery without sacrificing patient safety. The approach to cataract surgery varies considerably among public, subsidised and private hospitals.

  • The study investigates the fibrous flexor tendon pulleys in the fingers, highlighting their variability in size and arrangement despite their importance in hand function.
  • A total of 192 fingers from 48 body donors were dissected, revealing that only a small percentage exhibited the complete classical pulley pattern.
  • The findings indicate significant variability in the configurations of the pulleys, with implications for clinical practitioners working with hand anatomy.

The NF-κB pathway is involved in the pathogenesis of neurological disorders that have inflammation as a hallmark, including Parkinson's disease (PD). Our objective was to determine whether common functional variants in the NFKB1, NFKBIA and NFKBIZ genes were associated with the risk of PD. A total of 532 Spanish PD cases (61% male; 38% early-onset, ≤ 55 years) and 300 population controls (50% ≤55 years) were genotyped for the NFKB1 rs28362491 and rs7667496, NFKBIA rs696, and NFKBIZ rs1398608 polymorphisms.

Article Synopsis
  • - Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) during the peripartum period is a significant health issue, with unclear prognosis compared to the general TTS population, prompting a study utilizing a nationwide registry.
  • - Analysis showed that peripartum TTS patients commonly experience atypical symptoms like dyspnea, have different echocardiographic findings, and less ST-segment elevation than other TTS patients.
  • - Despite presenting with higher Killip status upon admission, peripartum TTS patients often have good long-term prognoses, even though their conditions are mainly secondary and linked to physical stressors.

Article Synopsis
  • - Vestibular schwannoma (VS), the most common tumor in the cerebellopontine angle, often leads to challenging treatment decisions among observation, surgery, or radiotherapy based on patient-specific factors including age and symptoms.
  • - A comprehensive literature review was conducted to create a clinical guide addressing frequently asked questions by clinicians regarding VS, with input from a panel of experts from the SEORL-CCC.
  • - The resulting clinical practice guideline summarizes the 13 most debated topics related to VS management, presenting answers to 50 key questions, though it notes that the levels of evidence are mostly medium or low due to a lack of sufficient prospective studies.

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a complex multisystemic disease resulting from infection of the endocardium, the prosthetic valves, or an implantable cardiac electronic device. The clinical presentation of patients with IE varies, ranging from acute and rapidly progressive symptoms to a more chronic disease onset. Because of its severe morbidity and mortality rates, it is necessary for radiologists to maintain a high degree of suspicion in evaluation of patients for IE.

An adequate knowledge of anticoagulants used to prevent clotting in the extracorporeal circuit is crucial to provide optimal hemodialysis. Drugs can potentially prevent extracorporeal circuit clotting, but administration, half-life, and potential side effects differ. However, there is a lack of concise recommendations to guide anticoagulation and to avoid side effects.

Consensus statement of the Spanish Society of Neurology on the treatment of multiple sclerosis and holistic patient management in 2023.

Neurologia (Engl Ed)

March 2024

Departamento de Neurología, Hospital Clínico San Carlos, IdISSC, Departamento de Medicina, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), Madrid, Spain.

The last consensus statement of the Spanish Society of Neurology's Demyelinating Diseases Study Group on the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) was issued in 2016. Although many of the positions taken remain valid, there have been significant changes in the management and treatment of MS, both due to the approval of new drugs with different action mechanisms and due to the evolution of previously fixed concepts. This has enabled new approaches to specific situations such as pregnancy and vaccination, and the inclusion of new variables in clinical decision-making, such as the early use of high-efficacy disease-modifying therapies (DMT), consideration of the patient's perspective, and the use of such novel technologies as remote monitoring.

Health care-associated infections in neonatology.

An Pediatr (Engl Ed)

January 2024

Servicio de Neonatología, Hospital Clínico Universitario de Santiago, IDIS, Universidad de Santiago, Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Electronic address:

Health care-associated infections are common in neonatology, but there is no consensus on their definitions. This makes it difficult to compare their incidence or assess the effectiveness of prevention bundles. This is why we think it is very important to achieve a consensus on the definitions and diagnostic criteria for one of the most frequent causes of morbidity in hospitalised neonates.
