Background: Length of stay (LOS) for inpatient psychiatric services is an important factor with serious drawbacks when it is extended more than needed. Impacts on economy, social functioning, and stigma can hamper improvement and affect the patients' experiences on future mental healthcare. Predictions of which patients have a higher chance for prolonged LOS have been extensively researched.

Accurate classification of postsurgical remission, and early recognition of recurrence are crucial to timely treat and prevent excess mortality in Cushing's Disease, yet the criteria used to define remission are variable and there is no consensus to define recurrence. Remission is defined as postsurgical hypocortisolemia, but delayed remission may occur. Recurrence is the return of clinical manifestations with biochemical evidence of hypercortisolism.

The new coronavirus that was first identified in December 2019 in Wuhan China, now called SARS-CoV-2, which causes the disease called COVID-19, has spread from China to the entire world in a few months. Due to its contagious potential (R0: 5.7) and because there is still no effective treatment to stop the infection, and a vaccine for prevention it is not yet available to the general population, COVID-19 is currently considered a global health problem.

Objectives: To explore a method to create affordable anatomical models of the biliary tree that are adequate for training laparoscopic cholecystectomy with an in-house built simulator.
Methods: We used a fused deposition modeling 3D printer to create molds of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) from Digital Imaging and Communication on Medicine (DICOM) images, and the molds were filled with silicone rubber. Thirteen surgeons with 4-5-year experience in the procedure evaluated the molds using a low-cost in-house built simulator utilizing a 5-point Likert-type scale.

Purpose: This study determined the prevalence, mortality, and time trends of children with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH).
Methods: Twenty-five hospital- and population-based surveillance programs in 19 International Clearinghouse for Birth Defects Surveillance and Research member countries provided birth defects mortality data between 1974 and 2015. CDH cases included live births, stillbirths, or elective termination of pregnancy for fetal anomalies.

Previous studies have suggested that sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors may improve hepatic function; however, the evidence is scarce. Hence, we performed a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials to evaluate the effect of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors on hepatic parameters. PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases were searched to identify randomized controlled trials examining the effect of SGLT2 inhibitors on hepatic parameters.

Dopamine agonists (DA) are the first line therapy for prolactinoma and symptomatic hyperprolactinemia; use as an adjuvant treatment for acromegaly and Cushing's disease is rare. Some patients develop psychiatric symptoms or have exacerbation of pre-existing conditions during DA therapy. A practical, clinically sensitive depression and impulse control disorders (ICD; particularly hypersexuality and gambling disorders) detection tool is important for identifying at risk patients.

Social determinants of health, including poverty, contribute significantly to health outcomes in the United States; however, their impact on pediatric hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) outcomes is poorly understood. We aimed to identify the association between neighborhood poverty and HCT outcomes for pediatric allogeneic HCT recipients in the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research database. We assembled 2 pediatric cohorts undergoing first allogeneic HCT from 2006 to 2015 at age ≤18 years, including 2053 children with malignant disease and 1696 children with nonmalignant disease.

Objective: To describe chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) treatment patterns and patient outcomes in Latin America.
Methods: This chart review study (NCT02559583; 2008-2015)evaluated time to progression (TTP) and overall survival (OS) outcomes among patients with CLL who initiate done (= 261) to two ( = 96) lines of therapy (LOT) since diagnosis. Differences in TTP and OS were assessed by Kaplan-Meier analysis, with a log-rank test for statistical significance.

Background: Omphalocele is the second most common abdominal birth defect and often occurs with other structural and genetic defects. The objective of this study was to determine omphalocele prevalence, time trends, and mortality during early childhood, by geographical region, and the presence of associated anomalies.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective study with 23 birth defect surveillance systems in 18 countries who are members of the International Clearinghouse for Birth Defects Surveillance and Research that submitted data on cases ascertained from 2000 through 2012, approximately 16 million pregnancies were surveyed that resulted in live births, stillbirths, or elective terminations of pregnancy for fetal anomalies (ETOPFA) and cases with omphalocele were included.

This study aimed to compare liver transplantation (LT) outcomes and evaluate the potential rise in numbers of LT candidates with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) of different allocation policies in a high waitlist mortality region. Three policies were applied in two Latin American cohorts (1085 HCC transplanted patients and 917 listed patients for HCC): (i) Milan criteria with expansion according to UCSF downstaging (UCSF-DS), (ii) the AFP score, and (iii) restrictive policy or Double Eligibility Criteria (DEC; within Milan + AFP score ≤2). Increase in HCC patient numbers was evaluated in an Argentinian prospective validation set (INCUCAI; NCT03775863).

Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is a technique that allows removal of complex or ill-defined skin cancer, combining tissue preservation and complete microscopic margin control. One of the main challenges of Mohs surgery is to illustrate the exact location of the tumour detected by light microscope. Using a dermoscope allows a fast, easy, reproducible way to accurately illustrate the location of a positive tumour on the Mohs map and ultimately transpose it to the surgical defect of the patient in a more precise way.

Primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an intriguing autoimmune disease characterized by autoantibodies against platelets and megakaryocytes. Clinical outcomes, response to treatment, and chronicity predictors were investigated. Patients with newly diagnosed primary ITP treated at a hematology referral center from 2008 to 2018 with complete medical and recent medication history were stratified by age as children < 16 years and adults > 16 years.

Ectopic ACTH-secretion causing Cushing's syndrome is unusual and its diagnosis is frequently challenging. The presence of high-molecular-weight precursors throughout pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) translation by these tumors is often not reported. We present the case of a 49-year-old woman with a 3-month history of proximal muscular weakness, skin pigmentation, and weight loss.

Clinical manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 infection include more frequently fever and cough, but complications (such as pneumonia, respiratory distress syndrome, and multiorgan failure) can occur in persons with additional comorbidities. Liver dysfunction is one of the most striking affections among patients suggesting that SARS-CoV-2 may represent a new king of liver aggressor. However, the molecular process underlying this phenomenon is still unclear.
