Pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD) is a very infrequent form of pulmonary arterial hypertension with an aggressive clinical course, poor response to specific vasodilator treatment, and low survival. Confirming a definitive diagnosis is essential to guide treatment and assess lung transplantation. However, in the absence of histological or genetic confirmation, the diagnosis is complex, requiring a clinical suspicion.

The malignant counterpart of cutaneous clear cell hidradenoma (CCH), hidradenocarcinoma, is an aggressive neoplasm that may have a fatal outcome. However, some cases of benign looking CCH with isolated lymph node involvement and excellent prognosis have been described. "CCH-like neoplasm of uncertain malignant potential" or "atypical hidradenoma" have been proposed as designations for these lesions.

Background: Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors are rare neoplasms for which few predictive and/or prognostic biomarkers have been validated. Our previous work suggested the potential of the combined expression of N-myc downstream-regulated gen-1 (NDRG-1), O6-methylguanine DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) and Pleckstrin homology-like domain family A member 3 (PHLDA-3) as prognostic factors for relapse and survival.
Methods: In this new multicenter study we evaluated immunohistochemistry expression in 76 patients with advanced PanNET who were treated with capecitabine-temozolomide or everolimus.

Cardio-surgical patient care requires a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to develop strategies to improve patient safety and outcomes. In the preoperative period, prophylaxis for frequent postoperative complications, such as de novo atrial fibrillation or bleeding, and prehabilitation based on exercise training, respiratory physiotherapy and nutritional and cognitive therapy, especially in fragile patients, stand out. There have been great advances, during the intraoperative phase, such as minimally invasive surgery, improved myocardial preservation, enhanced systemic perfusion and brain protection during extracorporeal circulation, or implementation of Safe Surgery protocols.

The increase in demand for medical care for renal complications associated with neoplastic diseases is a reality in most nephrology departments. In response to this overall situation, the creation of healthcare models such as monographic consultations and develop training programs in onconephrology could improve the care of these patients. Through an exploratory and descriptive study, we identified current situation of kidney involvement in cancer patients.

Body fat content and distribution in childhood is influenced by sex and puberty, but interethnic differences in the percentage and distribution of body fat also exist. The abdominal visceral/subcutaneous fat ratio has been the main feature of body fat distribution found to associate with the serum adipokine profile and metabolic derangement in adulthood obesity. This has also been assumed for childhood obesity despite the known singularities of this disease in the pediatric age in comparison to adults.

This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of a noninvasive operability assessment of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) based on multidetector computed tomographic angiography (MCTA). Up to 176 patients were evaluated from January 2016 to April 2018. Throughout the first phase, the initial surgical decision was made based on MCTA with further analysis of pulmonary angiography (PA) in order to evaluate in which cases the initial decision was not modified by PA.

Background: Cystic fibrosis (CF) patients have an alteration in fatty acid (FA) metabolism, associated with increased omega-6 and low omega-3 FA. Previous studies on supplementation with omega-3 FA in CF had contradictory results, and to date there is no evidence to recommend routine use of omega-3 supplements in CF patients. We hypothesized that long-term supplementation with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) will have beneficial effects in these patients, by reducing pulmonary, systemic and intestinal inflammation.

The proportion of cancer patients with tumours that harbour a potentially targetable genomic alteration is increasing considerably. The diagnosis of these genomic alterations can lead to tailoring of treatment, at the onset of disease or during progression, as well as providing additional, predictive information on the efficacy of immunotherapy. However, in up to 25% of cases, the initial tissue biopsy is inadequate for precision oncology and, in many cases, tumour genomic profiling at progression is not possible due to technical limitations of obtaining new tumour tissue specimens.

Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is a rare cause of thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA), characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, consumptive thrombocytopenia, and multisystem end organ involvement, most commonly affecting the kidney. Diagnosis is clinical, after exclusion of other TMA causes. Primary aHUS arises from genetic abnormalities, resulting in uncontrolled complement activity, while a variety of clinical scenarios cause secondary aHUS, including infection, pregnancy, malignancy, autoimmune disease, and medications.

Up to 20% of cancer patients will develop some manifestation of venous thromboembolic disease (VTD) during their clinical course. VTD greatly impacts morbidity, mortality, quality of life and pharmaceutical expenditure. In addition, both thrombotic relapse and major haemorrhages derived from VTD treatment are more likely in oncological patients.

Modes of death in patients with heart failure (HF) have been well characterized in randomized studies, but data from real-life are scarce, especially in the elderly, women and in HF with mid-range or preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Our purpose was to examine modes of death in HF patients according to age, sex and LVEF. We analysed the mode of death of HF patients from two prospective multicentre contemporary Spanish registries conducted by cardiologists (REDINSCOR, n = 2150) and by internists (RICA, n = 1396).

Background: Secondary traumatic stress (STS), a construct formed by compassion fatigue, shattered assumptions, and symptomatology, has been scarcely studied in intensive care units (ICU). In these units, healthcare workers encounter daily work stressors which impact on their health and well-being. Also, previous literature revealed a passion for caring among these workers, finding two types: harmonious passion, which may protect them against negative outcomes, and obsessive passion, which may boost negative consequences.
