Purpose: To evaluate the effect of osilodrostat and hypercortisolism control on blood pressure (BP) and glycemic control in patients with Cushing's disease.

Methods: Pooled analysis of two Phase III osilodrostat studies (LINC 3 and LINC 4), both comprising a 48-week core phase and an optional open-label extension. Changes from baseline in systolic and diastolic BP (SBP and DBP), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), and glycated hemoglobin (HbA) were evaluated during osilodrostat treatment in patients with/without hypertension or diabetes at baseline.

Background: Obesity is a significant risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD), with metabolic bariatric surgery offering potential renal benefits. However, there is limited comparative data on the impact of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) versus laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) on renal function in individuals with obesity without end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The objective of this study was to compare renal function outcomes following RYGB and LSG in patients with obesity, focusing on estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), serum creatinine, albumin-creatinine ratio (ACR), and serum cystatin C.

This cross-sectional study evaluates several bone biomarkers and their ability to discriminate turnover and mineralization defects in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Bone-specific [BSAP] and total [tAP] alkaline phosphatase, procollagen-1 N-terminal propeptide [P1NP], C-terminal cross-linking telopeptide [CTX], intact [iPTH] and whole [wPTH] parathyroid hormone, sclerostin [SOST], fibroblast growth factor 23 [FGF-23], vitamin D, osteoprotegerin [OPG], and receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand [RANKL] were collected before the bone biopsy.

Fucosylated chondroitin sulfate (FCS) is a unique polysaccharide, first described nearly four decades ago, and found exclusively in sea cucumbers. It is a component of the extracellular matrix, possibly associated with peculiar properties of the invertebrate tissue. The carbohydrate features a chondroitin sulfate core with branches of sulfated α-Fuc linked to position 3 of the β-GlcA.

Laboratório de Biomedicina do Cérebro, Instituto Estadual do Cérebro Paulo Niemeyer, Secretaria Estadual de Saúde, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Pituitary tumours (PT) are formed in the pituitary gland, a small gland situated at the base of the brain. These tumours can be categorized according to their histological origin and hormone production. In surgical series, non-functioning PT are the commonest subtype, followed by functioning somatotroph and corticotroph tumours.

J Stroke Cerebrovasc Dis

January 2025

Hospital Universitário Clementino Fraga Filho, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; D'Or Institute for Research and Education, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE) and a patent foramen ovale (PFO) are at a significantly increased risk of ischemic stroke compared to those without a PFO, with stroke rates of 19.5% versus 4.5%, respectively.
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis of 8 studies involving 1,197 patients highlighted this risk, showing a strong association between PFO and stroke in the context of PE (odds ratio of 5.36).
  • The findings also suggest that patients with PFO may experience higher mortality rates during acute PE episodes, indicating a need for careful monitoring and treatment strategies for this group.

  • Acromegaly is linked to an uncertain increased risk for colorectal cancer (CRC), prompting this study to evaluate the prevalence of colonic adenomatous polyps and CRC in acromegaly patients during colonoscopies.
  • The study involved 123 patients and found that the majority had non-neoplastic findings at their first colonoscopy, with a small percentage developing CRC over time; risk factors like age and smoking were significantly associated with neoplasia.
  • Findings indicate that older age (specifically over 50) and smoking elevate the risk of colonic lesions, suggesting that the recommended screening age for CRC in those with acromegaly may need to be reconsidered.
