Introduction: Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) serves as a method to estimate body composition. Parameters such as phase angle (PA), standardized phase angle (SPA), body mass cell (BCM), BCM index (BCMI), and fat-free mass (FFM) might significantly impact the prognosis of head and neck cancer (HNC) patients. The present study aimed to investigate whether bioelectrical parameters can be used to predict survival in the HNC population and establish the optimal cutoff points for predictive accuracy.

Instituto de Investigación e Innovación Biomédica de Cádiz (INiBICA), Hospital Universitario Puerta del Mar, Universidad de Cádiz, Cádiz, Spain.

The integration of complementary analytical platforms is nowadays the most common strategy for comprehensive metabolomics analysis of complex biological systems. In this chapter, we describe methods and tips for the application of a mass spectrometry multi-platform in Alzheimer's disease research, based on the combination of direct mass spectrometry and orthogonal hyphenated approaches, namely, reversed-phase ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography. These procedures have been optimized for the analysis of multiple biological samples from human patients and transgenic animal models, including blood serum, various brain regions (e.

Non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia in the general population, and its prevalence increases among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis. This population presents high risk of both hemorrhagic and thrombotic events, with little evidence regarding the use of oral anticoagulation treatment (OAT) and multiple complications arising from it; however, stroke prevention with percutaneous left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) is an alternative to be considered. We retrospectively describe the safety and efficacy of percutaneous LAAC in eight patients with NVAF and CKD on hemodialysis during a 12-month follow-up.

Laboratorio de Investigación, Diagnostics Building, Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria y Biomédica de Alicante (ISABIAL), Hospital General Universitario Dr. Balmis, Av. Pintor Baeza 12, 03010, Alicante, Spain.

Huntington's disease (HD) is caused by an aberrant expansion of CAG repeats in the HTT gene that mainly affects basal ganglia. Although striatal dysfunction has been widely studied in HD mouse models, other brain areas can also be relevant to the pathology. In this sense, we have special interest on the retina as this is the most exposed part of the central nervous system that enable health monitoring of patients using noninvasive techniques.

Article Synopsis
  • Heart failure (HF) is a common reason for elderly hospital admissions, particularly in women, who often experience higher rates of frailty; understanding the sex differences in frailty's impact on HF is crucial for tailored care.
  • Research indicates that frailty is a key predictor of mortality and hospital readmissions in HF patients, but it affects men and women differently; frailty was found to be a predictor of poor outcomes mainly in men.
  • Although women exhibit a higher prevalence of frailty, they tend to have lower mortality rates compared to men, suggesting that hormonal and psychosocial factors, along with the varying severity of HF, may play important roles in these differences.

Article Synopsis
  • HTLV antenatal screening is currently not mandatory in Spain, but the migration of pregnant women from endemic regions has increased, raising concerns about the prevalence of HTLV-1 among foreign women.
  • A study from January 2021 to October 2023 examined nearly 10,000 pregnant women in Spanish clinics, revealing that while only 0.05% tested positive for HTLV-1 overall, the prevalence was significantly higher (0.55%) among Latin American women.
  • The findings suggest that including anti-HTLV testing in antenatal care for pregnant women from Latin America is crucial, especially considering that the rates have risen compared to earlier surveys.

Does Donor Age Have Effects on Senescence Biomarkers in Kidney-Transplanted Patients?

Antioxid Redox Signal

May 2024

Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemical Engineering, Universidad Pablo de Olavide, Seville, Spain.

Renal transplantation is an effective treatment for severe chronic kidney diseases. However, young patients often face a scarcity of kidneys from donors of similar age, resulting in the transplantation of older organs, which increase the risk of graft rejection and several complications compared with older individuals who receive kidneys from donors of similar age or younger. This article focuses on studying different senescence biomarkers in donors and patients who received kidneys from various age ranges complying with the STROBE requirements.
