A lingual abscess is a rare but serious infection within the tongue parenchyma, posing significant risks due to potential airway obstruction. Despite advancements in oral hygiene and antibiotics, timely diagnosis and treatment are critical to prevent severe complications. In this case, we report a 29-year-old male with Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) who presented with a four-day history of severe tongue pain, swelling, decreased appetite, and fever, without any reported trauma.

Background: Plitidepsin has shown potent preclinical activity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 and was generally well tolerated in a phase I trial of hospitalized patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). NEPTUNO, a phase III, multicenter, randomized, controlled trial, was designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of plitidepsin in the management of moderate COVID-19 in hospitalized adult patients.
Methods: Included patients had documented severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection, required oxygen therapy, and had adequate organ function.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the most frequent indication for allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (alloHCT) worldwide; social and health system barriers limit its access. We performed an observational retrospective analysis in Mexico to analyze factors limiting alloHCT in fit patients with AML. With a median follow-up of 11.

The incidence of multiple myeloma (MM) has surged globally, particularly in Latin American countries, and is attributable to an aging population and increased life expectancy. This systematic review analyzes the epidemiology, patient characteristics, and treatment outcomes for MM in selected Latin American countries: Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay. PubMed and the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), conference abstracts (between June 2019 and June 2022), and GLOBOCAN registry (January 2010 to June 2022) were electronically searched.

Rationale & Objective: Almost 80% of individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) reside in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and are potentially underrepresented in randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs). We assessed the global distribution of RCTs comparing pharmacological treatments for CKD over the past 2 decades, as well as the magnitude and evolution of participation by LMICs.
Study Design: Systematic review.

Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapies are transforming the treatment of B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders and multiple myeloma, yet global access challenges and barriers for their implementation persist. Global access disparities persist, particularly for persons living in low and middle-income countries and for underserved populations in high income countries. In this review we address patient-related factors including age, comorbidities, fitness, race and ethnicity, and geographic location for CAR-T access.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections have become a serious threat to public health due to the increasing emergence of extensively antibiotic-resistant strains and high mortality rates. Therefore, the search for new therapeutic alternatives has become crucial. In this study, the antivirulence and antibacterial activity of methyl gallate was evaluated against six clinical isolates of extensively antibiotic-resistant P.

Objectives: Chronic inflammation promotes cardiovascular risk in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) improve disease activity and cardiovascular disease outcomes. We explored whether bDMARDs influence the impact of disease activity and inflammatory markers on long-term cardiovascular risk in RA.

Objectives: We aimed to characterise baseline disease and treatment burden in a large population with haemophilia A/B, both with (HAwI/HBwI) and without (HA/HB) inhibitors.
Methods: The prospective, non-interventional explorer6 study included patients ≥12 years old with severe HA, severe/moderate HB or HAwI/HBwI of any severity, treated according to local standard of care (excluding previous/current exposure to concizumab or emicizumab). Baseline characteristics and historical clinical data were collected and patient-reported outcomes, including treatment burden, were assessed.

Anaphylactic shock is the most severe form of an acute systemic allergic reaction and can be potentially lethal if left untreated. Here, we present the case of a 51-year-old male with no significant medical history, who arrived at our hospital's emergency trauma bay following a motor vehicle accident caused by a sudden onset of malaise while driving. Upon arrival, the patient's airway was patent, but he reported a sensation of a foreign body in his larynx.

A panel of 24 international experts met in July 2022 to discuss challenges associated with pertussis detection, monitoring, and vaccination in adults; conclusions from this meeting are presented. There has been a shift in the epidemiology of pertussis toward older children and adults. This shift has been attributed to the waning of infection- or vaccine-induced immunity, newer detection techniques causing detection bias, and possibly the replacement of whole-cell pertussis with acellular vaccines in high-income countries, which may lead to immunity waning more quickly.

Unlabelled: Antibiotic resistance has emerged as a global threat to public health, generating a growing interest in investigating the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in environments influenced by anthropogenic activities. Wastewater treatment plants in hospital serve as significant reservoirs of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, where a favorable environment is established, promoting the proliferation and transfer of resistance genes among different bacterial species. In our study, we isolated a total of 243 strains from 5 hospital wastewater sites in Mexico, belonging to 21 distinct Gram-negative bacterial species.

Background: complex is the leader pathogen for the World Health Organization's list due to the escalating prevalence of multidrug-resistant strains. Insights into the molecular characterization of carbapenemase genes in complex infections among children are scarce. To address this gap, we conducted a systematic review to describe the molecular epidemiology of the carbapenemase genes in complex infections in the pediatric population.

Background: The impact of social determinants of health in allogeneic transplant recipients in low- and middle-income countries is poorly described. This observational study analyzes the impact of place of residence, referring institution, and transplant cost coverage (out-of-pocket government-funded private insurance) on outcomes after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (alloHSCT) in two of Mexico's largest public and private institutions.
Aim: To evaluate the impact of social determinants of health and their relationship with outcomes among allogeneic transplant recipients in Mexico.

Sexual dysfunction (SD) has been associated with worse quality of life and higher disease activity in patients with rheumatic diseases, yet it is still not regularly addressed during routine rheumatologic evaluations. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of sexual dysfunction in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and evaluate their perception of their sexual health. We performed a retrospective study in an outpatient rheumatology clinic to evaluate patients over 18 years old with a diagnosis of RA or SLE through the Spanish version of the Arizona Sexual Experiences Scale (ASEX) and the Sexual Health Perception Survey (SHEPS), a questionnaire of 6 items designed in our clinic.
