A lingual abscess is a rare but serious infection within the tongue parenchyma, posing significant risks due to potential airway obstruction. Despite advancements in oral hygiene and antibiotics, timely diagnosis and treatment are critical to prevent severe complications. In this case, we report a 29-year-old male with Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) who presented with a four-day history of severe tongue pain, swelling, decreased appetite, and fever, without any reported trauma.

A Phase III Randomized Controlled Trial of Plitidepsin, a Marine-Derived Compound, in Hospitalized Adults With Moderate COVID-19.

Background: Plitidepsin has shown potent preclinical activity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 and was generally well tolerated in a phase I trial of hospitalized patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). NEPTUNO, a phase III, multicenter, randomized, controlled trial, was designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of plitidepsin in the management of moderate COVID-19 in hospitalized adult patients.

The incidence of multiple myeloma (MM) has surged globally, particularly in Latin American countries, and is attributable to an aging population and increased life expectancy. This systematic review analyzes the epidemiology, patient characteristics, and treatment outcomes for MM in selected Latin American countries: Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay. PubMed and the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), conference abstracts (between June 2019 and June 2022), and GLOBOCAN registry (January 2010 to June 2022) were electronically searched.

Representation of Low- and Middle-Income Countries in CKD Drug Trials: A Systematic Review.

Rationale & Objective: Almost 80% of individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) reside in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and are potentially underrepresented in randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs). We assessed the global distribution of RCTs comparing pharmacological treatments for CKD over the past 2 decades, as well as the magnitude and evolution of participation by LMICs.

Public health management of pertussis in adults: Practical challenges and future strategies.

A panel of 24 international experts met in July 2022 to discuss challenges associated with pertussis detection, monitoring, and vaccination in adults; conclusions from this meeting are presented. There has been a shift in the epidemiology of pertussis toward older children and adults. This shift has been attributed to the waning of infection- or vaccine-induced immunity, newer detection techniques causing detection bias, and possibly the replacement of whole-cell pertussis with acellular vaccines in high-income countries, which may lead to immunity waning more quickly.
