Introduction: In prostate cancer, androgens are key in the growth of both normal prostate and cancer cells. Abiraterone acetate inhibits CYP17, an important target in prostate cancer given its central role in the production of adrenal and tumor-derived androgens. Although abiraterone is generally well tolerated, common adverse effects such as hypertension, hypokalemia, and hepatotoxicity have been reported.

Providencia rettgeri, belonging to the genus Providencia, had gained significant interest due to its increasing prevalence as a common pathogen responsible for healthcare-associated infections in hospitals. P. rettgeri isolates producing carbapenemases have been reported to reduce the efficiency of carbapenems in clinical antimicrobial therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • A 38-year-old Hispanic man visited a dermatology clinic for a dark macule on his left hand that he'd had since childhood, which was growing but asymptomatic, and had no other skin lesions.
  • A biopsy showed spindle-shaped cells with melanin granules consistent with acquired dermal melanocytosis (ADM), a rare and benign skin condition characterized by the presence of melanocytes in the dermis.
  • The patient was informed about the benign nature of ADM and chose not to pursue any treatment, noting that few cases of this specific hand presentation have been reported.

Objectives: To explore prevalence, characteristics and risk factors of COVID-19 breakthrough infections (BIs) in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) using data from the COVID-19 Vaccination in Autoimmune Diseases (COVAD) study.

Methods: A validated patient self-reporting e-survey was circulated by the COVAD study group to collect data on COVID-19 infection and vaccination in 2022. BIs were defined as COVID-19 occurring ≥14 days after 2 vaccine doses.

High-Yield Expression and Purification of Scygonadin, an Antimicrobial Peptide, Using the Small Metal-Binding Protein SmbP.

Microorganisms

January 2024

Facultad de Ciencias Quimicas, Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, Avenida Universidad s/n, Ciudad Universitaria, San Nicolas de los Garza 66455, Mexico.

Article Synopsis
  • Producing antimicrobial peptides in bacteria is difficult due to the reducing environment in their cytoplasm and issues like insoluble protein aggregates and degradation.* -
  • In this study, researchers used a small metal-binding protein called SmbP as a fusion partner to express and purify the antimicrobial peptide scygonadin in bacterial strains, achieving high yields and purity.* -
  • The results showed that both scygonadin constructs had antimicrobial activity with effective concentrations, indicating that SmbP could be a viable strategy for developing new antimicrobial drugs.*

The association of air pollution in respiratory allergy: Its impact in an industrial city.

World Allergy Organ J

February 2024

Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, Faculty of Medicine and Hospital Universitario "Dr. José Eleuterio González", Regional Center of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Gonzalitos y Madero s/n Colonia Mitras Centro, Monterrey, Nuevo León, CP 64460, Mexico.

Background: Asthma and allergic diseases have increased in recent decades and are more common in industrialized countries. Industrial areas with a considerably high number of inhabitants and vehicles can favor the presence of serious air pollution and therefore the appearance and exacerbation of respiratory allergy symptoms. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between exposure to environmental pollutants with exacerbation of respiratory allergy.

  • Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of hospitalization in infants and older adults, but its impact on older populations in Latin America is often overlooked.
  • * There is limited research on RSV epidemiology and management among older adults in Latin America, indicating a need for more focused studies and interventions.
  • * This article discusses the challenges in understanding RSV's burden in the region and suggests an expert consensus to enhance disease management and healthcare outcomes for those at risk.*

Background And Purpose: Some studies have shown that influenza vaccination is associated with a lower risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection; in patients with COVID-19 infection, admission to intensive care is reduced, with less need for mechanical ventilation, shorter hospital stays, and reduced mortality. This study aimed to determine if a history of annual influenza vaccination impacts the clinical course of SARS-CoV-2 infection during hospitalization.

Methods: This was an observational, prospective, cohort study of patients older than 65 admitted to the COVID-19 unit from January to June 2021.

Haploidentical hematopoietic can be conducted on an outpatient basis but the two main reasons to accept into the hospital a patient in this setting are complications of the hematological toxicity and/or the cytokine-release syndrome. With the aim of reducing the post-transplant cyclophosphamide-dependent toxicity without compromising its effectivity, attempts to reduce the dose of post-transplant cyclophosphamide have been made: Decreases from the conventional total dose of post-transplant cyclophosphamide (100 mg/Kg) have been explored worldwide, showing that decreasing the total dose to even 50 mg/Kg significantly decreases the toxicity of the procedure without compromising its efficacy, safety and results. We present here the salient data of the attempts to diminish the doses of post-transplant cyclophosphamide which have been done and published worldwide, information that suggests that the conventional doses of post-transplant cyclophosphamide can be significantly reduced thus decreasing the toxicity, without compromising the effectiveness of the procedure, mainly the development of graft host disease.

LL-37_Renalexin hybrid peptide exhibits antimicrobial activity at lower MICs than its counterpart single peptides.

Appl Microbiol Biotechnol

December 2024

Facultad de Ciencias Quimicas, Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, Avenida Universidad s/n, Ciudad Universitaria, 66455, San Nicolas de los Garza, NL, Mexico.

An alarming global public health and economic peril has been the emergence of antibiotic resistance resulting from clinically relevant bacteria pathogens, including Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumonia, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter species constantly exhibiting intrinsic and extrinsic resistance mechanisms against last-resort antibiotics like gentamycin, ciprofloxacin, tetracycline, colistin, and standard ampicillin prescription in clinical practices. The discovery and applications of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) with antibacterial properties have been considered and proven as alternative antimicrobial agents to antibiotics. In this study, we have designed, produced, and purified a recombinant novel multifunctional hybrid antimicrobial peptide LL-37_Renalexin for the first time via the application of newly designed flexible GS peptide linker coupled with the use of our previously characterized small metal-binding proteins SmbP and CusF3H+ as carrier proteins that allow for an enhanced bacterial expression, using BL21(DE3) and SHuffle T7(DE3) Escherichia coli strains, and purification of the hybrid peptide via immobilized metal affinity chromatography.
