Article Synopsis
  • Patients in emergency departments experience more stress than those in outpatient settings, particularly regarding Medically Unexplained Physical Symptoms (MUS).
  • A study involving 138 MUS patients found that 75% attributed their symptoms to psychosocial factors, correlating with higher perceived stress levels compared to those attributing their symptoms to organic causes.
  • The findings suggest healthcare professionals should consider both psychosocial factors and stress management when treating MUS patients to improve patient care.

In this study, we aim to evaluate whether thoracic ultrasound (TUS) and tracheal amylase (TA) alone or in combination can predict the development of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in neurocritical patients. Consecutive adult patients with neurocritical disease with normal chest radiographs who required intensive care unit admission and mechanical ventilation between March 2015 and July 2018 were included. TUS and Amylase levels were measured during the first 24 hours and repeated 48 hours after orotracheal intubation.

Background: Breast reduction techniques have been considered functional procedures proposed to reduce the volume and elevate the position of the nipple-areola complex. Traditionally these techniques were performed as mostly functional procedures. The main reasons for dissatisfaction after a reduction technique are breasts with a deflated appearance due to alteration of the shape, particularly of the upper pole, and simultaneously, the high frequency in the appearance of pseudoptosis in the medium and long term.

In Mexico, seasonal influenza epidemics results in substantial mortality and burden to healthcare resources. The country`s health authority provides vaccination to children <5 years old; adults >60 years of age; those aged 5-60 years with risk factors. Inclusion of school-aged children and adults until 59 years of old with no risk factors in the vaccination program would be highly beneficial.

Background: Co-occurring genomic alterations identified downstream main oncogenic drivers have become more evident since the introduction of next-generation sequencing (NGS) analyses at diagnosis and progression. Emerging evidence has stated that co-occurring genomic alterations at diagnosis might represent de novo and primary resistance mechanisms to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) in advanced EGFR-mutant (EGFRm) non-small lung cancer (NSCLC). In this study, we assessed the prognostic role of co-occurring genomic alterations in advanced EGFRm NSCLC.

Article Synopsis
  • * Trichinella spiralis, a type of parasite, uses its excretory-secretory (ES) antigens to prevent the formation of NETs by keeping neutrophil nuclei intact, which means NETs aren't released.
  • * The study suggests that while ES antigens inhibit NET formation, other neutrophil functions like phagocytosis and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production remain unaffected, indicating a potential therapeutic angle for autoimmune diseases involving NETs.

Hematol Transfus Cell Ther

September 2022

Hematology Service, Hospital Universitario "Dr. José Eleuterio González", Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, Francisco I. Madero Ave. No number. Mitras Centro, Monterrey, Nuevo León, México. Electronic address:

Introduction: Pre-apheresis peripheral blood CD34+ cell count (PBCD34+) is the most important predictor of good cell mobilization before hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, albeit flow cytometry is not always immediately available. Identification of surrogate markers can be useful. The CD34+ cells proliferate after mobilization, resulting in elevated lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity and correlating with the PBCD34+ count.

Background: Vitiligo is characterized by an autoimmune response targeting melanocytes, thus resulting in skin depigmentation. There are several genetic components involved in the development of vitiligo, of which various gene polymorphisms are currently considered as risk factors. For example, the CTLA4 (T-lymphocyte antigen 4) +49A/G (rs231775) and CT60 (rs3087243) gene variants have been associated with a predisposition for autoimmune diseases in different populations; however, their involvement in the development of vitiligo remains controversial.
