Brain tumours represent a burden for society, not only due to the risks they entail but also because of the possibility of losing relevant cognitive functions for the patient's life after their resection. In the present study, we report how we monitored chess performance through a multimodal Electrical Stimulation Mapping (ESM) - functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) combined protocol. The ESM was performed under a left parietal lobe tumour resection surgery on a patient that expressed the desire to preserve his chess playing ability post-operative.

The overexpression of HLA and adhesion molecules by thyroid follicular cells (TFC) and our recent demonstration that PD-L1 is also moderately expressed by TFCs in autoimmune thyroid indicates that TFCs they may activate but also inhibit the autoimmune response. Intriguingly, we have recently found that in vitro cultured TFCs are able to suppress the proliferation of autologous lymphocyte T in a contact-dependent manner which is independent of the PD-1/PD-L1 signaling pathway.

Here we report that autologous primary TFCs, but not transformed TFCs, inhibit CD4 and CD8 T cell proliferation but no cytokine production.

The role of the anterior insular cortex in self-monitoring: A novel study protocol with electrical stimulation mapping and functional magnetic resonance imaging.

Becoming aware of one's own states is a fundamental aspect for self-monitoring, allowing us to adjust our beliefs of the world to the changing context. Previous evidence points out to the key role of the anterior insular cortex (aIC) in evaluating the consequences of our own actions, especially whenever an error has occurred. In the present study, we propose a new multimodal protocol combining electrical stimulation mapping (ESM) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore the functional role of the aIC for self-monitoring in patients undergoing awake brain surgery.

Orthotopic murine xenograft model of uveal melanoma with spontaneous liver metastasis.

Uveal melanoma is the most common intraocular malignancy in adults. Despite the effective primary treatment, up to 50% of patients with uveal melanoma will develop metastatic lesions mainly in the liver, which are resistant to conventional chemotherapy and lead to patient's death. To date, no orthotopic murine models of uveal melanoma which can develop spontaneous metastasis are available for preclinical studies.

Collapsing Glomerulonephritis in a Kidney Transplant Recipient after mRNA SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination.

With the vaccination against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), studies are describing cases of glomerulonephritis arising after vaccination. We present the first case of a kidney transplant patient who, after mRNA vaccination against SARS-CoV-2, developed nephrotic proteinuria and renal dysfunction, with a biopsy diagnostic of collapsing glomerulonephritis. No other triggers for this glomerulonephritis were identified.

Intraoperative Brain Mapping in Multilingual Patients: What Do We Know and Where Are We Going?

In this review, we evaluate the knowledge gained so far about the neural bases of multilingual language processing obtained mainly through imaging and electrical stimulation mapping (ESM). We attempt to answer some key questions about multilingualism in the light of recent literature evidence, such as the degree of anatomical-functional integration of two or more languages in a multilingual brain, how the age of L2-acquisition affects language organization in the human brain, or how the brain controls more than one language. Finally, we highlight the future trends in multilingual language mapping.

Inferior fronto-occipital fascicle displacement in temporoinsular gliomas using diffusion tensor imaging.

Background And Purpose: Brain tumors can result in displacement or destruction of important white matter tracts such as the inferior fronto-occipital fascicle (IFOF). Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) can assess the extent of this effect and potentially provide neurosurgeons with an accurate map to guide tumor resection; analyze IFOF displacement patterns in temporoinsular gliomas based on tumor grading and topography in the temporal lobe; and assess whether these patterns follow a predictable pattern, to assist in maximal tumor resection while preserving IFOF function.

Methods: Thirty-four patients with temporal gliomas and available presurgical MRI were recruited.

Nivolumab Plus Ipilimumab for Treatment-Naïve Metastatic Uveal Melanoma: An Open-Label, Multicenter, Phase II Trial by the Spanish Multidisciplinary Melanoma Group (GEM-1402).

Purpose: This study aimed to assess the efficacy of the combination of nivolumab (nivo) plus ipilimumab (ipi) as a first-line therapy with respect to the 12-month overall survival (OS) in patients with metastatic uveal melanoma (MUM) who are not eligible for liver resection.

Methods: This was a single-arm, phase II trial led by the Spanish Multidisciplinary Melanoma Group (GEM) on nivo plus ipi for systemic treatment-naïve patients of age > 18 years, with histologically confirmed MUM, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group-PS 0/1, and confirmed progressive metastatic disease (M1). Nivo (1 mg/kg once every 3 weeks) and ipi (3 mg/kg once every 3 weeks) were administered during four inductions, followed by nivo (3 mg/kg once every 2 weeks) until progressive disease, toxicity, or withdrawal.

Perioperative nurses' experiences in relation to surgical patient safety: A qualitative study.

Surgical patient safety remains a concern worldwide as, despite World Health Organization recommendations and implementation of its Surgical Safety Checklist, adverse events continue to occur. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore the views and experiences of perioperative nurses regarding the factors that impact surgical patient safety. Data were collected through five focus groups involving a total of 50 perioperative nurses recruited from four public hospitals in Spain.

The black box of global aphasia: Neuroanatomical underpinnings of remission from acute global aphasia with preserved inner language function.

Objective: We studied an unusual case of global aphasia (GA) occurring after brain tumor removal and remitting one-month after surgery. After recovering, the patient reported on her experience during the episode, which suggested a partial preservation of language abilities (such as semantic processing) and the presence of inner speech (IS) despite a failure in overt speech production. Thus, we explored the role of IS and preserved language functions in the acute phase and investigated the neuroanatomical underpinnings of this severe breakdown in language processing.

Bayes-based dosing of infliximab in inflammatory bowel diseases: Short-term efficacy.

Aims: Therapeutic drug monitoring of infliximab can guide clinical decisions in patients with loss of response and in those who can benefit from a de-intensification. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of therapeutic drug monitoring combined with Bayesian forecasting methodology on clinical response in a real-world dataset of patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease.

Methods: We performed a single-centre prospective study with one-group pre-test/post-test design in 108 adult inflammatory bowel disease patients treated with model-based dosing of infliximab maintenance treatment.

Predictors of Infliximab Trough Concentrations in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Patients Using a Repeated-Measures Design.

Background And Aims: Treating patients based on a treat-to-trough approach has been shown to be a cost-effective strategy for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients who have become unresponsive to infliximab (IFX). However, the documented evidence for this is limited, and some controversy remains regarding the use of routine proactive therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM). To support routine TDM of IFX and regimen optimization in IBD patients, more in-depth knowledge of the covariates that affect the pharmacokinetic (PK) variability of IFX is needed.

Glucose Modifies the Effect of Endovascular Thrombectomy in Patients With Acute Stroke.

Background and Purpose- Hyperglycemia is a negative prognostic factor after acute ischemic stroke but is not known whether glucose is associated with the effects of endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) in patients with large-vessel stroke. In a pooled-data meta-analysis, we analyzed whether serum glucose is a treatment modifier of the efficacy of EVT in acute stroke. Methods- Seven randomized trials compared EVT with standard care between 2010 and 2017 (HERMES Collaboration [highly effective reperfusion using multiple endovascular devices]).

White-matter pathways and semantic processing: intrasurgical and lesion-symptom mapping evidence.

In the present study, we aimed to test the association between the correct function of the left ventral white matter pathways and semantic processing (dual stream models for language processing, Hickok & Poeppel, 2004), using a new set of language tasks during intraoperative electrical stimulation at white matter level. Additionally, we evaluated brain regions needed for correct performance on the different semantic tasks using lesion-symptom analyses (voxel lesion-symptom mapping and track-wise lesion analysis) in a sample of 62 candidates for the awake brain surgery. We found that electrical stimulation in the vicinity of the inferior longitudinal and inferior fronto-occipital fasciculi disturbed performance on semantic processing tasks.

Involvement of the middle frontal gyrus in language switching as revealed by electrical stimulation mapping and functional magnetic resonance imaging in bilingual brain tumor patients.

Neural basis of language switching and the cognitive models of bilingualism remain controversial. We explored the functional neuroanatomy of language switching implementing a new multimodal protocol assessing neuropsychological, functional magnetic resonance and intraoperative electrical stimulation mapping results. A prospective series of 9 Spanish-Catalan bilingual candidates for awake brain surgery underwent a specific language switching paradigm implemented both before and after surgery, throughout the electrical stimulation procedure and during functional magnetic resonance both pre- and postoperatively.

Fluorizoline is a new synthetic molecule that induces apoptosis by selectively targeting prohibitins. In the study herein, the pro-apoptotic effect of fluorizoline was assessed in 34 primary samples from patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Fluorizoline induced apoptosis in chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells at concentrations in the low micromolar range.

Cross-situational word learning in aphasia.

Human learners can resolve referential ambiguity and discover the relationships between words and meanings through a cross-situational learning (CSL) strategy. Some people with aphasia (PWA) can learn word-referent pairings under referential uncertainty supported by online feedback. However, it remains unknown whether PWA can learn new words cross-situationally and if such learning ability is supported by statistical learning (SL) mechanisms.
