Hepatitis D virus was first described by Mario Rizzeto in 1977, and it is considered chronic viral hepatitis with the poorest prognosis. Despite its discovery almost 50 years ago, progress in its diagnosis and treatment has been scarce until recent years. The approval of bulevirtide has shed some light for patients with Chronic Hepatitis D, although important gaps regarding its use in therapy as well as about the epidemiology and diagnosis of the disease need to be addressed.

Background: Subclinical inflammation, including borderline lesions (BL), is very common (30-40%) after kidney transplantation (KT), even in low immunological risk patients, and can lead to interstitial fibrosis/tubular atrophy (IFTA) and worsening of renal function with graft loss. Few controlled studies have analyzed the therapeutic benefit of treating these BL on renal function and graft histology. Furthermore, these studies have only used bolus steroids, which may be insufficient to slow the progression of these lesions.

Article Synopsis
  • A polymorphism in the NDFIP1 gene is linked to multiple sclerosis (MS) susceptibility and plays a role in immune functions and central nervous system development.
  • Researchers studied how this gene variant affects immune cell activation and metabolism, comparing 87 MS patients and 84 healthy controls.
  • Findings revealed that healthy individuals with the minor allele had higher NDFIP1 expression and better metabolic activity in immune cells, while these traits were less pronounced in MS patients, indicating differing effects of NDFIP1 in healthy versus diseased states.

The active human immunodeficiency virus reservoir during antiretroviral therapy: emerging players in viral persistence.

Curr Opin HIV AIDS

July 2021

Infectious Disease Department, Hospital Universitari Valld'Hebron, Institut de Recerca (VHIR), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain.

Purpose Of Review: To discuss the role of CD4+ T cells with active Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), meaning infected cells with transcriptional and/or translational viral activity during antiretroviral therapy (ART), focusing on new technologies for its detection, potential cell markers for its characterization, and evidences on the contribution of the active HIV reservoir to long-term viral persistence.

Recent Findings: HIV-infected cells expressing viral ribonucleic acid are systematically detected in subjects on long-term ART. In recent years, powerful new tools have provided significant insights into the nature, quantification, and identification of cells with active HIV, including the identification of new cell markers, and the presence of viral activity in specific cell populations located in different cellular and anatomical compartments.

Electronic address:

Introduction: Axillary staging (pN) is a strong predictor of outcome in early stage breast cancer yet following the publication of the Z0011 trial there has been an increasing tendency to spare lymph node dissection. Automated molecular detection of cytokeratin 19mRNA by one-step nucleic acid amplification (OSNA) has been demonstrated to be an accurate method to assess sentinel lymph node (SLN) metastasis. In this study we compare histological and molecular methods following complete axillary lymph node dissection (cALND), determine whether molecular axillary staging affects survival, and evaluate the predictive and prognostic value of total tumor load in ALND (AD-TTL) and in all positive nodes (G-TTL).

Introduction: Increased soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase to placental growth factor ratio (sFlt-1/PlGF) has been demonstrated in early-onset fetal growth restriction (FGR) and small for gestational age (SGA). sFlt-1/PlGF cut-offs have been described to assess preeclampsia severity; however, sFlt-1/PlGF values present in early-onset SGA and different FGR severity stages remain unknown. Hence, the objective of this study was to describe and compare the sFlt-1/PlGF values and pregnancy outcomes among early-onset SGA/FGR stages.

January 2018

Universidade Federal de São Paulo, Disciplina de Neurologia, São Paulo SP, Brasil.

Article Synopsis
  • A study in Brazil involving 96 patients with relapsing-remitting MS found that patients perceive the severity of MS as very high and view the risk of serious complications from the drug natalizumab as moderate to high.* -
  • A significant majority (76%) of Brazilian patients considered a risk of 1:1,000 or higher unacceptable, indicating a more conservative approach to therapy compared to patients from Germany and Spain.* -
  • The findings suggest that perceptions of disease severity and risk acceptance can vary by country and should be taken into account during treatment discussions and potential adjustments in medical guidelines.*

Gut dysbiosis and neuroimmune responses to brain infection with Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus.

Sci Rep

March 2017

Grupo de Neuroinmunología, Departamento de Neurobiología Funcional y de Sistemas, Instituto Cajal, CSIC, Madrid, Spain.

Recent studies have begun to point out the contribution of microbiota to multiple sclerosis (MS) pathogenesis. Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus induced demyelinating disease (TMEV-IDD) is a model of progressive MS. Here, we first analyze the effect of intracerebral infection with TMEV on commensal microbiota and secondly, whether the early microbiota depletion influences the immune responses to TMEV on the acute phase (14 dpi) and its impact on the chronic phase (85 dpi).
