Analysis of 3 Different Operative Techniques for Extra-articular Fractures of the Phalanges and Metacarpals.

Several techniques have been described for treating metacarpal and phalangeal fractures. We sought to compare the 3 techniques most frequently used for extra-articular metacarpal and phalangeal fractures: plate screw (PS), Kirschner wire (KW), and retrograde intramedullary screw (RIS) fixation. We aimed to determine whether using an RIS provides better clinical outcomes than using either a PS or a KW fixation.

Indirect effects of paediatric conjugate vaccines on invasive pneumococcal disease in older adults.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the indirect effect of paediatric 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) vaccination on people ≥65 years of age with invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in Catalonia and to determine factors predictive of mortality.

Methods: During 2014-2016, 1285 IPD cases were reported to the Public Health Agency of Catalonia. The indirect effect of paediatric PCV13 vaccination was calculated by comparing the incidence rate (IR) in 2016 (PCV13 year) with that in 2009 (pre-PCV13).

The ectonucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase-2 (NTPDase2) in human endometrium: a novel marker of basal stroma and mesenchymal stem cells.

The human endometrium undergoes repetitive regeneration cycles in order to recover the functional layer, shed during menses. The basal layer, which remains in charge of endometrial regeneration in every cycle, contains adult stem or progenitor cells of epithelial and mesenchymal lineage. Some pathologies such as adenomyosis, in which endometrial tissue develops within the myometrium, originate from this layer.

Vascularized Periosteal Flaps Accelerate Osteointegration and Revascularization of Allografts in Rats.

Background: Surgical reconstruction of large bone defects with structural bone allografts can restore bone stock but is associated with complications such as nonunion, fracture, and infection. Vascularized reconstructive techniques may provide an alternative in the repair of critical bone defects; however, no studies specifically addressing the role of vascularized periosteal flaps in stimulating bone allograft revascularization and osseointegration have been reported.

Questions/purposes: (1) Does a vascularized periosteal flap increase the likelihood of union at the allograft-host junction in a critical-size defect femoral model in rats? (2) Does a vascularized periosteal flap promote revascularization of a critical-size defect structural bone allograft in a rat model? (3) What type of ossification occurs in connection with a vascularized periosteal flap?

Methods: Sixty-four rats were assigned to two equal groups.

Neoantigens, which are expressed on tumor cells, are one of the main targets of an effective antitumor T-cell response. Cancer immunotherapies to target neoantigens are of growing interest and are in early human trials, but methods to identify neoantigens either require invasive or difficult-to-obtain clinical specimens, require the screening of hundreds to thousands of synthetic peptides or tandem minigenes, or are only relevant to specific human leukocyte antigen (HLA) alleles. We apply deep learning to a large (N = 74 patients) HLA peptide and genomic dataset from various human tumors to create a computational model of antigen presentation for neoantigen prediction.

Sex differences in 1-year mortality risks in older patients experiencing a first acute heart failure hospitalization.

Aim: To assess whether 1-year mortality in older patients experiencing a first admission for acute heart failure was related to sex, and to explore differential characteristics according to sex.

Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 1132 patients aged >70 years of age admitted within a 3-year period because of a first episode of acute heart failure. We analyzed sex differences.

Surgical technique and outcomes for bilateral humeral lengthening for achondroplasia: 26-year experience.

Background: Elongation in patients with achondroplasia provides better overall skeletal proportionality and significantly improves such individuals' access to their perineal region to self-manage personal hygiene. This paper describes our surgical technique and outcomes for bilateral humeral lengthening in achondroplasia patients over 26 years.

Methods: Ours was a retrospective study of 55 patients with achondroplasia-related short stature, in whom bilateral humeral lengthening was performed from 1990 to 2016.

The changing epidemiology of invasive pneumococcal disease after PCV13 vaccination in a country with intermediate vaccination coverage.

Background: We studied the impact of 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) on the incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) and serotype distribution in a region with intermediate levels of vaccination (around 64% in children aged <2 years).

Methods: Surveillance data on IPD cases reported by microbiologists participating in the Microbiological Reporting System of Catalonia during 2006-2014 were analysed. We compared estimated incidence rate (IR) ratios for serotypes included in PCV7, PCV10non7, PCV13non10 and non-PCV13 between the PCV7 (2006-2009) and PCV13 periods (2010-2014).

Vascularized Thumb Metacarpal Periosteal Flap for Scaphoid Nonunion in Adolescents: A Prospective Cohort Study of 12 Patients.

Purpose: To evaluate clinical and radiological outcomes after surgical treatment of scaphoid nonunion in adolescents with a vascularized thumb metacarpal periosteal pedicled flap (VTMPF).

Methods: Twelve patients younger than 18 years with scaphoid nonunion, who underwent a VTMPF procedure without bone grafting, were included for this prospective cohort study, at a mean follow-up of 10.2 months.

Advantages of performing mentoplasties with customized guides and plates generated with 3D planning and printing. Results from a series of 23 cases.

Purpose: To evaluate the benefits of performing mentoplasty using custom guides and plates in a series of 23 patients.

Patients And Methods: An 18-month observational study in 23 patients (16 women, 7 men) who underwent procedures for chin augmentation (n = 15), reduction and centering mentoplasty (n = 6), chin asymmetry correction (n = 1) and placement of a custom chin implant to correct esthetics (n = 1) was conducted in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Hospital Universitario Dexeus (Barcelona, Spain).

Results: A mentoplasty technique using customized surgical guides and plates, performed under local anesthesia and oral sedation, was performed in every case.

Dorsolateral Biplane Closing Radial Osteotomy and Lunate Fixation for Stage IIIC Kienböck Disease: A New Surgical Approach.

The treatment of advanced-stage Kienböck disease (KD) remains highly controversial. Particularly important is stage IIIC KD, which includes patients with a lunate coronal fracture. The purpose of this paper was to describe a new approach to KD in patients with Lichtman stage IIIC KD, and our results using it.

A predictive model including maternal parameters (maternal age, maternal BMI, maternal history of preeclampsia or intrauterine growth restriction (PE/IUGR) or maternal chronic disease, and maternal arterial pressure) and mean pulsatility index (PI) of uterine Doppler was created.

Volar Plate Fixation to Treat Scaphoid Nonunion: A Case Series With Minimum 3 Years of Follow-Up.

Purpose: Several options exist for treating scaphoid nonunion. For selected cases, some authors recommend using a volar buttress plate. The aim of the study was to report the clinical and radiological outcomes achieved at a minimum of 3 years' follow-up of treating scaphoid nonunion with a scaphoid volar plate.

High comorbidity, measured by the Charlson Comorbidity Index, associates with higher 1-year mortality risks in elderly patients experiencing a first acute heart failure hospitalization.

Background: Comorbidity is related to poor health results in chronic heart failure (HF).

Body dissatisfaction and eating disorder symptomatology: Which factors interfere with sexuality in women with eating disorders?

Body dissatisfaction is a relevant aspect in both eating disorders and sexuality. Using Stice's model, this study aimed to evaluate the relationship between these variables in eating disorder patients compared with healthy controls. Statistically significant correlations between body dissatisfaction and sexuality were found in the whole sample.

Vascularized ulnar periosteal pedicled flap for forearm reconstruction: Anatomical study and a case report.

Purpose: Through an anatomical review, the aim of this study is to define the ulnar periosteal branches of the posterior interosseous vessels (PIV). In addition, we report the clinical utility of a vascularized ulnar periosteal pedicled flap (VUPPF), supplied by the investigated PIV, in a complex case of radial nonunion.
