Institut de Neuropsiquiatria i Adiccions (INAD), Parc de Salut Mar, Barcelona, Spain; Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red en Salud Mental (CIBERSAM), Barcelona, Spain; Fundació Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM), Barcelona, Spain.

Background: Approximately 20-30% of patients with schizophrenia fail to respond to antipsychotic treatment and are considered treatment resistant (TR). Although clozapine is the treatment of choice in these patients, in real-world clinical settings, clinicians often delay clozapine initiation, especially in first-episode psychosis (FEP).

Aim: The main aim of this study was to describe prescription patterns for clozapine in a sample of patients diagnosed with FEP and receiving specialized treatment at a university hospital.

Article Synopsis
  • Dysmorphologists face challenges due to the diverse phenotypic variability of human faces, particularly when using Next-Generation Phenotyping (NGP) tools, which are often trained on limited data.
  • To address this, the GestaltMatcher Database (GMDB) was created, compiling over 10,980 facial images from various global populations, significantly improving the representation of underrepresented ancestries, especially African and Asian patients.
  • The study found that incorporating data from non-European patients enhanced NGP accuracy by over 11% without compromising performance for European patients, highlighting the importance of diverse datasets in identifying genetic disorders.

Background: The growing incidence of lower gastrointestinal bleeding (LGIB) is leading to a rise in-hospital admissions even though most LGIB episodes are self-limiting. The Oakland and SHAPE scores were designed to identify patients best suited to outpatient care. Our aim is explore the validity of the SHAPE score and compare both of these scores in terms of predictiveness of safe discharge.

  • - Yaws, caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum ssp. pertenue, is a major health issue in tropical West Africa and the South Pacific, particularly impacting children in areas lacking hygiene and sanitation.
  • - A study in Ghana, Cameroon, and Côte d'Ivoire found diverse beliefs about yaws transmission among locals, with many attributing it to germs or contaminated water, while some linked it to witchcraft, and a low percentage recognized person-to-person contact as a method of transmission.
  • - Most participants preferred seeking care from hospitals or healthcare professionals if diagnosed with yaws, but there was a significant reliance on traditional healers in Côte d'Ivoire, highlighting the necessity for increased community education and awareness

Purpose: To assess the reliability of excising residual breast cancer lesions after neoadjuvant systemic therapy (NAST) using a previously localized paramagnetic seed (Magseed®) and the subsequent use of contrast-enhanced spectral mammography (CESM) to evaluate response.

Methods: Observational, prospective, multicenter study including adult women (> 18 years) with invasive breast carcinoma undergoing NAST between January 2022 and February 2023 with non-palpable tumor lesions at surgery. Radiologists marked tumors with Magseed® during biopsy before NAST, and surgeons excised tumors guided by the Sentimag® magnetometer.

Aims: In low-risk patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS), sutureless surgical aortic valve replacement (SU-SAVR) may be an alternative to transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). The risk of heart failure hospitalization (HFH) after aortic valve replacement (AVR) in this population is incompletely characterized. This study aims to investigate the incidence, predictors, and outcomes of HFH in patients undergoing SU-SAVR versus TAVI.

Background: The diagnosis of coeliac disease (CD) in adults is based on clinical, serological and histological criteria. The inappropriate performance of intestinal biopsies, non-specificity of mild histological lesions and initiation of a gluten-free diet (GFD) before biopsy may hamper the diagnosis. In these situations, determining the intraepithelial lymphogram of the duodenum by flow cytometry (IEL-FC) can be helpful.

Patients hospitalized with COVID-19 have low levels of vitamins and trace elements. This could lead to a post-acute COVID-19 condition (PCC) that can worsen a patient's quality of life. We aimed to study the baseline micronutrient status of patients and assess whether a multiple micronutrient supplement (MMS) taken for 2 weeks at the first sign of COVID-19 symptoms would be able to reduce the incidence of PCC.

Background And Objectives: Whether the outcome of patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) differs depending on the type of hospital where they are admitted is uncertain. The objective of this study was to determine influence of hospital type at admission (telestroke center [TSC], primary stroke center [PSC], or comprehensive stroke center [CSC]) on outcome for patients with ICH. We hypothesized that outcomes may be better for patients admitted to a CSC.

This study investigates the association between maximal functional capacity (peakVO) and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in 133 ambulatory patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), focusing on patients with obesity. Across all participants, NT-proBNP inversely correlated with peakVO. However, this association varied based on obesity status.

Article Synopsis
  • The SORAYA trial investigated the efficacy of mirvetuximab soravtansine-gynx in patients with FRα-high platinum-resistant ovarian cancer, achieving a primary endpoint with an objective response rate of 32.4%.
  • With a median overall survival of 15.0 months, those with fewer previous therapies had better outcomes (18.7 months for one to two lines vs. 11.6 months for three lines).
  • Response rates varied by treatment history, with a higher objective response rate noted in patients receiving mirvetuximab as their first treatment in the platinum-resistant setting (34.8%) compared to those who had prior therapies (28.2%).

Background: People living with HIV (PLWH) are at increased risk of acquisition of multidrug resistant organisms due to higher rates of predisposing factors. The gut microbiome is the main reservoir of the collection of antimicrobial resistance determinants known as the gut resistome. In PLWH, changes in gut microbiome have been linked to immune activation and HIV-1 associated complications.

Sinusoidal obstruction syndrome/veno-occlusive disease (SOS/VOD) is a life-threatening complication after both autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). However, its characterization after haploidentical HSCT (haplo-HSCT) with post-transplantation cyclophosphamide (PT-Cy) is scarce. This study aimed to describe characteristics and outcomes of patients with SOS/VOD after haplo-HSCT with PT-Cy.

Substance use disorders (SUD), also named addiction when it is severe, is a chronic brain disorder with serious impact on individual who suffer, the public health and with high burden of disease. They are multitude of mechanisms/factors involved in addiction: from individual characteristics of the person (from genetic to impacts of stress, sex, and age) to social and environmental situation (availability and accessibility of substances, cultural and legal aspects, socio-economical situation) and type of substance of use (pharmacological characteristics) Then, research on Addiction must include different, complementary, and translational perspectives. In this review, we explore the neurobiological, psychosocial, and epidemiological knowledge of substance addiction, and the main role played by pharmacology in the research in this field.
