Orphanet J Rare Dis

December 2024

Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Carrera 30 No.45-03. Edificio 471, Piso 5to, Of. 513-A, Bogotá, Colombia.

Background: Hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (hATTR) is a rare autosomal dominant disease with high clinical variability, influenced by both genotype and the geographic origins of carriers. There is a limited understanding of the Val142Ile and Ser43Asn recognised mutations in Ecuador and Colombia. Therefore, the objective of this study is to describe the neurological and functional characteristics of patients with hATTR associated with the Val142Ile and Ser43Asn mutations, as well as to identify possible differentiating factors between the two mutations.

Colistin resistance screening by 3 μg/ml colistin agar in Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales.

J Clin Lab Anal

September 2022

Department of Microbiology, School of Medicine and PhD Program in Clinical Medicine and Public Health, University of Granada & ibs, Granada, Spain.

Background: In low- and middle-income countries, the use of colistin in therapeutic regimens is common, to treat infections produced for Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) due to limited access to the recently discovered-approved antibiotics. Furthermore, the technical limitations to perform colistin susceptibility tests make it difficult to assess the suitability of this treatment for each patient, as well as to monitor the rates of resistance. In the present study, we describe the use of agar dilution using a unique colistin concentration of 3 μg/ml to discriminate isolates with colistin resistance in CPE obtained from clinical samples.

Article Synopsis
  • Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic, incurable disease characterized by periods of remission and relapse, with increasing global prevalence.
  • A comprehensive review involved healthcare professionals and patients to formulate clinical questions, retrieve evidence from various databases, and provide recommendations using the GRADE system.
  • For treatment, budesonide MMX is recommended for mild-to-moderate UC, while moderate-to-severe cases may utilize therapies like infliximab and adalimumab, with alternatives available if initial treatments fail.

Purpose: Operable triple-negative breast cancers (TNBCs) have a higher risk of relapse than non-TNBCs with standard therapy. The GEICAM/2003-11_CIBOMA/2004-01 trial explored extended adjuvant capecitabine after completion of standard chemotherapy in patients with early TNBC.

Patients And Methods: Eligible patients were those with operable, node-positive-or node negative with tumor 1 cm or greater-TNBC, with prior anthracycline- and/or taxane-containing chemotherapy.

Besides the well-known increased risk of developing HIV-related infectious comorbidities; compared with the general population, people living with HIV (PLHIV) may also have an increased risk of developing noninfectious comorbidities (NICMs). This is the first study intended to determine the NICMs rates affecting PLHIV who were under cART regimen in Ecuador. A total of 503 HIV-positive patients were evaluated during the period June 2015-November 2016 and included in a multicenter retrospective, cross-sectional study conducted in seven main government and nongovernment community-based hospitals in Ecuador.

Introduction: Hip fracture is a common and devastating event in older adults causing increased dependence, comorbidity, and mortality. Since new surgical techniques have not significantly improved the mortality rate, a better understanding of patient risk factors could improve the treatment algorithm and outcomes. This prospective study aimed to document the 1-year survival rate of patients with intertrochanteric fracture treated surgically in Latin America and to investigate risk factors associated with 1-year mortality.

Department of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine, Section of Hospital Medicine, Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA.

An aortic aneurysm is a permanent localized arterial dilation with more than 50% of the artery diameter. Among the complications of an aortic aneurysm, one of the rarest is the aorto-bronchial fistula, which presents with massive hemoptysis; this condition is lethal if not treated surgically. We report a 90-year-old man with no significant medical history who presented to the emergency department with abrupt onset of hemoptysis; his chest X-ray displayed left upper lobe opacity with widened mediastinum.

Introduction: Cerebral angiography (CA) is considered as the gold standard in diagnosis of intracranial aneurysms; nevertheless, the magnetic resonance angiography (MR-angiography) is wide spread used in detection of unruptured aneurysm. For this reason, several authors had proposed that MR-angiography could replace CA in the diagnosis of ruptured aneurysms.

Aims: To asses the efficacy of MR-angiography in diagnosis of ruptured intracranial aneurysms, and in addition to determine the safeness of its surgical management with MR-angiography alone.
