The purpose of this study was to compare a wearable system for body core temperature measurement versus bladder and tympanic thermometers in an intensive care setting. The question was, if continuous non-invasive sensors in the intensive care unit represent an alternative to current standard methods of invasive continuous bladder temperature measurement methods?Between May and September 2023, a comparative investigation involving 112 patients was conducted in a 20-bed surgical intensive care unit to assess various temperature probes, including those placed in the tympanic tube, bladder, and skin. To achieve this, a wireless non-invasive sensor system provided by greenTEG AG, Switzerland, was affixed to different body locations (clavicular and lateral chest) of each catheterized patient (equipped with a temperature probe) admitted to the intensive care unit.

The clinical presentation, organ involvement, and severity of disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 are highly variable, ranging from asymptomatic or mild infection to respiratory or multi-organ failure and, in children and young adults, the life-threatening multisystemic inflammatory disease (MIS-C). SARS-CoV-2 enters cells via the angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 receptor (ACE-2), which is expressed on the cell surfaces of all organ systems, including the gastrointestinal tract. GI manifestations have a high prevalence in children with COVID-19.

(1) Background: Dyslipidemia represents a major risk factor for atherosclerosis-driven cardiovascular disease. Emerging evidence suggests a close relationship between cholesterol metabolism and gut microbiota. Recently, we demonstrated that the short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) propionate (PA) reduces serum cholesterol levels through an immunomodulatory mechanism.

The use of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) has drastically changed the management of HCV-infected patients by achieving a 95-98% sustained virologic response (SVR) and reducing morbidity and mortality in this population. However, despite their effectiveness, controversy exists concerning the occurrence of oncologic events following DAA therapy. A retrospective analysis was conducted on data from the Swiss Hepatitis C Cohort Study, a prospective cohort involving patients with positive HCV viremia upon inclusion, enrolled in various Swiss centers from September 2000 to November 2021.

The current study addresses the question of whether the resection of more than one BM by multiple craniotomies within the same operation is associated with more adverse events (AEs) and worse functional outcome compared to cases in which only one BM was resected. All patients who underwent more than one craniotomy for resection of multiple BM at two Swiss tertiary neurosurgical care centers were included. Any AEs, functional outcome, and overall survival (OS) were analyzed after 1:1 propensity score matching with patients who underwent removal of a single BM only.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) prevalence in surgical patients is high, emphasizing the need for preventative measures. This study addresses the insufficient evidence on nephroprotective intraoperative fluid resuscitation and highlights the drawbacks of relying solely on serum creatinine/urine output to monitor kidney function. This study assessed the impact of intraoperative fluid management on AKI in female breast cancer patients undergoing autologous breast reconstruction, utilizing novel urinary biomarkers (TIMP-2 and IGFBP-7).

Introduction: In clinical experience, occiput posterior (OP) position is associated with longer labor duration than occiput anterior (OA) position, but few studies have investigated the association between labor duration and fetal position. We aimed to compare duration of the active phase of labor in OP deliveries with OA deliveries in a contemporary population using survival methods. Secondary aims were to compare the frequencies of operative interventions, obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASIS), postpartum hemorrhage, and newborn outcomes in OP with OA deliveries.

Introduction: Presence of deep infiltrating bowel endometriosis (DE) is associated with occurrence of dyschezia and gastrointestinal symptoms. The degree of the disease, the lesion length, and the location, that is, lesion-to-anal-verge distance (LAVD) of DE, as well as the severity of the symptoms appear to be correlated. Nevertheless, it is not yet known to what extent the size and LAVD of bowel DE influence the severity of gastrointestinal symptoms.

This case report presents a 59-year-old female patient with mandibular gingival metastasis from adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid part of the colon, who underwent radical colectomy with simultaneous hysterectomy involving and left oophorectomy (due to tumor involvement) eight years ago. Because of metastatic spread to the liver, a partial left lateral lobectomy was performed, and because of a metastatic lesion in the left adrenal gland, the latter was excised and a partial resection of the left kidney was performed. The patient was given a number of courses of chemotherapy, target therapy, and immunotherapy.

Background: Left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) represents an alternative to oral anticoagulation for stroke prevention in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF). While transoesophageal echocardiography is the current standard for guiding LAAC procedures, several centers have employed fluoroscopic guidance alone. However, data on long-term outcomes are lacking.

Emergency general surgeons often provide care to severely ill patients requiring surgical interventions and intensive support. One of the primary drivers of morbidity and mortality is perioperative bleeding. In general, when addressing life threatening haemorrhage, blood transfusion can become an essential part of overall resuscitation.

Background: Clinical prediction models (CPM), such as the SCOAP-CERTAIN tool, can be utilized to enhance decision-making for lumbar spinal fusion surgery by providing quantitative estimates of outcomes, aiding surgeons in assessing potential benefits and risks for each individual patient. External validation is crucial in CPM to assess generalizability beyond the initial dataset. This ensures performance in diverse populations, reliability and real-world applicability of the results.
