Chest and abdominal X-rays after the insertion of an epicutaneo-caval catheter in infants are the standard method of checking the tip location in many neonatal intensive care units. The role of ultrasound in the tip location of the epicutaneo-caval catheter in neonates has been the subject of many recent studies. This systematic review investigates the accuracy of epicutaneo-caval catheter tip location by comparing ultrasound and conventional radiology.

Glioblastoma (GBM) cancer stem cells (GSCs) contribute to GBM's origin, recurrence, and resistance to treatment. However, the understanding of how mRNA expression patterns of GBM subtypes are reflected at global proteome level in GSCs is limited. To characterize protein expression in GSCs, we performed in-depth proteogenomic analysis of patient-derived GSCs by RNA-sequencing and mass-spectrometry.

Secondary hydrosalpinx in adolescents: a challenging decision-making process for surgical choice and future fertility preservation.

Hydrosalpinx in pre-pubertal children and non-sexually active adolescents is a rare finding with several etiology and negative impact on future female fertility. The therapeutic approach in these specific populations is debated and it must consider its etiology and adult guidelines focused on fertility issues, which suggest laparoscopic salpingectomy. We described two adolescent cases (15 years asymptomatic and 13 years with abdominal pain) presenting a monolateral hydrosalpinx secondary to surgery for Hirschsprung's disease and complicated appendicitis, respectively.

Risk factors for endocrine complications in transfusion-dependent thalassemia patients on chelation therapy with deferasirox: a risk assessment study from a multi-center nation-wide cohort.

Transfusion-dependent patients typically develop iron-induced cardiomyopathy, liver disease, and endocrine complications. We aimed to estimate the incidence of endocrine disorders in transfusiondependent thalassemia (TDT) patients during long-term iron-chelation therapy with deferasirox (DFX). We developed a multi-center follow-up study of 426 TDT patients treated with once-daily DFX for a median duration of 8 years, up to 18.

Current status on the adoption of high energy devices in Italy: An Italian Society for Endoscopic Surgery and New Technologies (SICE) national survey.

Background: In the past three decades, different High Energy Devices (HED) have been introduced in surgical practice to improve the efficiency of surgical procedures. HED allow vessel sealing, coagulation and transection as well as an efficient tissue dissection. This survey was designed to verify the current status on the adoption of HED in Italy.

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of 3D visualization applied to laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) performed by young surgeons (YS). We considered both operative features and clinical outcomes, aiming to highlight the benefits that this technology could bring to novice surgeons and their laparoscopic training.

Methods: All the surgical procedures were performed by residents who had performed less than 20 appendectomies prior to the beginning of the study under the supervision of an expert surgeon.

Copper-64 Dichloride as Theranostic Agent for Glioblastoma Multiforme: A Preclinical Study.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common primary malignant brain tumor in adults with a median survival time less than one year. To date, there are only a limited number of effective agents available for GBM therapy and this does not seem to add much survival advantage over the conventional approach based on surgery and radiotherapy. Therefore, the development of novel therapeutic approaches to GBM is essential and those based on radionuclide therapy could be of significant clinical impact.

Intravascular physiologic evaluation of the left anterior small thoracotomy operation: a novel approach to left anterior descending artery revascularization.

Background: Efficacy and long-term patency rate of the left internal mammary artery (LIMA) conduits for revascularization of the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) has been demonstrated, with improved results as compared to the saphenous vein graft operation. Novel approaches to LAD revascularization including the use of the left anterior small thoracotomy (LAST) operation with persistence of the intercostal arteries compared to the traditional LIMA operation have not been reported. This study evaluated flow characteristics of LAST operation.
