Background Evidence that a vegetarian diet rich in antioxidants contributes to cardiovascular health are growing, however, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unknown. HO-1 (heme-oxygenase-1), a marker of adaptive response, is protective against oxidative stress and has shown cardioprotective effects. Therefore, we evaluated circulating HO-1 levels and the effect of plasma from omnivorous and vegetarians in endothelial cells (human umbilical vein endothelial cells) on modulating NRF2 (nuclear factor erythroid 2-like 2)/HO-1 and nitric oxide production.

Fish bones are the most commonly ingested structures and the most common cause of foreign body perforation of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Clinical presentation of foreign body GIT perforation is nonspecific, in many cases with clinical signs of acute abdomen, which can mimic appendicitis, diverticulitis, ulcer peptic disease, and other common inflammatory conditions. Besides, patients commonly do not refer that a fish bone was swallowed.

BACKGROUND Influenza viral load (VL) can be a decisive factor in determining the antiviral efficacy in viral clearance. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the rate of infection and the role of influenza VL on the clinical spectrum of illnesses among different patient groups attended at a tertiary hospital in Brazil. METHODS Samples were collected from patients presenting acute respiratory infection from 2009 to 2013.

Background: A daily algorithm for hospital discharge (DAHD) is a key point in the concept of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol. We aimed to evaluate the length of stay (LOS), rate of complications, and hospital costs variances after the introduction of the DAHD compared to the traditional postoperative management of brain tumour patients.
Methods: This is a cohort study with partial retrospective data collection.

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common condition in women. There is an increased concern on reduction of bacterial susceptibility resulting from wrongly prescribing antimicrobials. This paper summarizes the recommendations of four Brazilian medical societies (SBI - Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases, FEBRASGO - Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics Associations, SBU - Brazilian Society of Urology, and SBPC/ML - Brazilian Society of Clinical Pathology/Laboratory Medicine) on the management of urinary tract infection in women.

An international, expert led consensus initiative was set up by the Collaborative Ocular Tuberculosis Study (COTS) group to develop systematic, evidence, and experience-based recommendations for the treatment of ocular TB using a modified Delphi technique process. In the first round of Delphi, the group identified clinical scenarios pertinent to ocular TB based on five clinical phenotypes (anterior uveitis, intermediate uveitis, choroiditis, retinal vasculitis, and panuveitis). Using an interactive online questionnaires, guided by background knowledge from published literature, 486 consensus statements for initiating ATT were generated and deliberated amongst 81 global uveitis experts.

Background: Pulmonary disease is a frequent acute and chronic manifestation in sickle cell disease (SCD), presenting high morbidity and mortality.
Objectives: To identify the prevalence and association of asthma, allergic sensitization and altered pulmonary function in patients with SCD (SS and Sβ).
Methods: A single-center, cross-sectional study was conducted, in which 70 patients with SCD and 44 controls, aged six to 18 years, responded to the questionnaire of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC), complemented with an anamnesis regarding the associated clinical outcomes.

Background: Surgical residency training is a complex and costly task. Hospital economic health is dependent on different variables, but it is especially linked to the country macroeconomics that may be extremely fluctuating, especially in underdeveloped countries. This study analyzed the correlation between a single-center university hospital financial status and subjective perception of general surgery residents on program support and adequacy.

Background: Statistics indicate low utilization of potential donors, where only about one-third are converted into actual donors. In this context, it is plausible to argue that many potential donors are not hemodynamically stable for harvesting multiple organs since the procedures for maintaining parameters of stability may not be a priority in all critical care units in the country. Thus, it is necessary to identify losses of potential donors due to hemodynamic maintenance since reversing this situation enable minimizing mortality on waiting lists.

Purpose: Many patients with open-angle glaucoma eventually require >2 medications to lower their intraocular pressure (IOP). Fixed-combination ophthalmic solutions can be advantageous in patients who require multiple medications, but the number of fixed combinations combining 3 complementary IOP-lowering agents remains limited. This study assessed the efficacy and safety of a triple fixed combination (TFC) of bimatoprost 0.

Methods: Using multicolor flow cytometry, we evaluated TAMs phenotype in 93 breast cancer (BC) patients. Furthermore, monocytes from healthy donors were cultured in the presence of supernatants from dilacerated primary tumors to investigate their differentiation into macrophages (MΦ) .

In this paper we introduce a single serotype transmission model, including an age-dependent mosquito biting rate, to find the optimal vaccination age against dengue in Brazil with Dengvaxia. The optimal vaccination age and minimal lifetime expected risk of hospitalisation are found by adapting a method due to Hethcote (Math Biosci 89:29-52). Any number and combination of the four dengue serotypes DENv1-4 is considered.

Purpose: Identify the prevalence of the nursing diagnosis (ND) Fatigue in patients with heart failure (HF) and to analyze the accuracy of its defining characteristics (DCs).
Methods: 50 patients were assessed for Fatigue through a distance ambulated <300m during the Six-Minute Walking Test (6MWT) and the report of insufficient energy. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values were calculated for the DCs associated with Fatigue.

The most commonly identified pathogens related to bacterial meningitis are group B streptococcus and gram-negative enteric flora; anaerobic sepsis and meningitis are very rare. We report a case on a preterm and extremely low-birth weight infant who developed meningitis caused by Bacteroides fragilis and his mother who had postpartum sepsis also caused by the same agent.

The aim of this study was to investigate the autonomic modulation of heart rate in healthy individuals exposed to long-term air pollution through geometric methods. We analyzed data from 109 healthy adults aged 18 to 49, divided into three groups according to the exposure time: period 0 to 15 years of exposure (n = 29), more than 15 years of exposure (n = 31), and control group (n = 49). For the analysis of heart rate variability (HRV), heart rate was recorded beat-to-beat for 20 min in the sitting position.
