Focal Intramucosal Adenocarcinoma Occurring in Gastric Hyperplastic Polyps Treated with Endoscopic Mucosal Resection.

Hyperplastic polyps are the most frequent benign epithelial gastric polyps. Although they are considered nonneoplastic, some cases have been reported with focal adenocarcinoma. We present the case of a 59-year-old woman with a sessile lesion of 15 mm on the distal gastric body associated with an extensive atrophic gastritis.

Extended-time of Noninvasive Positive Pressure Ventilation Improves Tissue Perfusion after Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery: a Randomized Clinical Trial.

Objective: To compare the effects of extended- versus short-time noninvasive positive pressure ventilation on pulmonary function, tissue perfusion, and clinical outcomes in the early postoperative period following coronary artery bypass surgery in patients with preserved left ventricular function.

Methods: Patients were randomized into two groups according to noninvasive positive pressure ventilation intensity: short-time noninvasive positive pressure ventilation n=20 (S-NPPV) and extended-time noninvasive positive pressure ventilation n=21 (E-NPPV). S-NPPV was applied for 60 minutes during immediate postoperative period and 10 minutes, twice daily, from postoperative days 1-5.

Midwifery practice and maternity services: A multisite descriptive study in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Objective: over the past three decades there has been a social movement in Latin American countries (LAC) to support humanised, physiologic birth. Rates of caesarean section overall in Latin America are approximately 35%, increasing up to 85% in some cases. There are many factors related to poor outcomes with regard to maternal and newborn/infant health in LAC countries.

Study protocol for the Maule Cohort (MAUCO) of chronic diseases, Chile 2014-2024.

Background: Maule Cohort (MAUCO), a Chilean cohort study, seeks to analyze the natural history of chronic diseases in the agricultural county of Molina (40,000 inhabitants) in the Maule Region, Chile. Molina´s population is of particular interest because in the last few decades it changed from being undernourished to suffering excess caloric intake, and it currently has the highest national rates of cardiovascular diseases, stomach cancer and gallbladder cancer. Between 2009 and 2011 Molina´s poverty rate dropped from 24.

Gastric residual volume by magnetic ressonance after intake of maltodextrin and glutamine: a randomized double-blind, crossover study.

Context: The addition of glutamine in preoperative drinks may enhance the benefits of carbohydrate alone.

Objectives: To evaluate the gastric residual volume after the intake of a beverage containing carbohydrate plus glutamine.

Methods: Eleven healthy volunteers (24-30 years-old) were randomized in a crossover fashion to intake 400 mL (4h before) and 200 mL (2h before) of a beverage containing either 12.

[Adnexal torsion: three cases].

Adnexal torsion is a gynecological emergency caused by the torsion of the ovary over its pedicle producing lymphatic and venous stasis, later it develops into ischemia and necrosis, when is not treated. Until recently, the treatment for adnexal torsion has been adnexectomy. This paper report three cases treated successfully with conservative treatment.

[Treatment of patients with endometriosis and infertility].

Background: The Word Endometriosis Society estimates that 176 millions of women in the world have experienced endometriosis symptoms way before their quality of life has been compromised. Despite the advances, endometriosis continues to be a challenge for doctors nowadays.

[Factors related to therapeutic failure in the extraction of bile duct stones for endoscopic retrograde colangiopancreatography ERCP].

Objective: Determine the factors that contribute to the technical difficulty of endoscopic clearance of common bile duct (CBD) stones in patients that underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).

Methods: Prospective study included 90 patients, who underwent ERCP and an endoscopic sphincterotomy for the extraction of CBD stone. Between April 2009 and March 2010 at Arzobispo Loayza National Hospital.

Homozygotic intronic GAA mutation in three siblings with late-onset Pompe's disease.

Unlabelled: Pompe's disease (PD) is a metabolic myopathy caused by the accumulation of lysosomal glycogen, secondary to acid alpha-glucosidase (GAA) enzyme deficiency. Childhood and late-onset forms are described, differing by the age of onset and symptoms. In this study were analyzed affected siblings with Pompe's disease (PD) and their distinct clinical and pathological presentations.

[Gastric cancer in a general hospital. Santa Rosa Hospital. Experience].

Purpose: Determine the frequency of gastric cancer and its clinical and pathological characteristics, clinical stages, surgical treatment, morbimortality and survival in a general hospital.

Materials And Methods: Retrospective, descriptive study on 71 consecutive patients diagnosed with gastric cancer at the Santa Rosa Hospital from January 1, 2005 to January 31, 2008.

Results: During the study period, 71 cases of gastric adenocarcinoma were confirmed by histopathology.

[Laparoscopic [corrected] Hartmann's reversal procedure and posterior pelvic exenteration for rectal carcinoma].

Hartmann's Reversal procedure is a major surgical procedure and high morbidity rates has been reported. Many institutions has begun to apply the this procedure by laparoscopy achieving low morbidity rates, due to less eventrations, wound infections and less days of hospitalization, among others. We present a case of locally advance rectal cancer that was formerly submitted to a posterior radical pelvic exenteration that received postoperative chemoradiation, followed by a laparoscopic Hartmann reversal without any complications.

[Hypokalemic periodic paralysis as first manifestation of hyperthyroidism: case report].

We report a case of thyrotoxicosis in a 37 year old male, in whom hypokalemic periodic paralysis was the first manifestation of the disease. We comment about the differential diagnosis with other types of periodic paralysis, and the importance of a correct diagnosis to avoid permanent muscle damage.

[Guillain-Barré syndrome associated with acute pancreatitis. Case report].

We report a clinical case of Guillain-Barré syndrome associated with acute pancreatitis, and perform a review in literature about clinical complications related to Guillain-Barré syndrome. We suggest the possibility of being the events immunologically related.

[Tropical spastic paraparesis/HTLV-I associated myelopathy. Report of 2 cases diagnosed in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, Brazil].

We describe two cases of tropical spastic paraparesis/HTLV-I associated myelopathy, according to the criteria of World Health Organization-1989. These are the first cases diagnosed in Cuiabá (Mato Grosso State, Brazil). One of them had a good response with the treatment with prednisone.

[Non-familial episodic ataxia possibly associated with the use of nicotine: case report].

The author reports a case of non-familial episodic ataxia responsive to acetazolamide, clinically similar to episodic ataxia type 2 (EA-2), in which nicotine is a possible factor in the origin of the ataxic episodes.
