Central nervous system involvement related to decompression sickness (DCS) is a very rare complication of breath-hold diving. So far, it has been postulated that repeated dives with short surface intervals represent a key factor in the development of breath-holding-related DCS. We report the case of a breath-hold diver who, after repeated immersion, developed DCS with brain involvement.

Article Synopsis
  • Whole-brain radiation therapy (WBRT) and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) are key treatments for brain metastases, with this study focusing on the effectiveness of volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT-RS) in breast cancer patients.
  • 18 breast cancer patients with 41 brain metastases were evaluated, revealing that HER2+ patients had significantly longer median survival times, with the cerebellum being the most common location for metastases.
  • The findings indicate that VMAT-RS offers comparable survival rates to other radiosurgery methods, highlighting that patients' baseline conditions and cancer subtypes play a crucial role in influencing outcomes.

Objective: To analyze the prevalence of antiseizure medication (ASM) in patients with brain metastasis-related epilepsy (BMRE) treated with radiosurgery and the relationship between ASM and psychiatric comorbidity.

Material And Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational design study with retrospective review of medical records of all patients with brain metastases treated with volumetric modulated arc therapy radiosurgery (VMAT-RS) between 2012 and 2018 in a tertiary oncology center. We included those patients with BMRE, analyzing the clinical and demographic data, with special attention to psychiatric comorbidities and the use of ASM.

Real-world data on BRAF mutation frequency in advanced melanoma are lacking in Spain. Moreover, data available on clinicopathological profile of patients with advanced BRAF-mutant melanoma are currently limited. This study aimed to assess the frequency of BRAF V600 mutations in Spanish patients with advanced or metastatic melanoma and to identify clinical and histopathological features associated with BRAF-mutated tumors.

Introduction: Moyamoya disease (MMD) is an occlusive cerebrovascular disease characterized by progressive stenosis or occlusion in the terminal portion of the bilateral internal carotid arteries, affecting both children and adults.

Aim: To conduct a review and update on MMD from a clinical, neuroradiological, neuropsychological and genetic perspective.

Development: In this pathology, which occurs with ischemia or cerebral hemorrhage, an unusual compensatory vascular network (moyamoya vessels) develops at the base of the brain in the form of collateral channels.

Introduction: Tourette's disorder is the result of fronto-striatal brain dysfunction affecting people of all ages, with a debut in early childhood and continuing into adolescence and adulthood.

Development: This article reviews the main cognitive, functional neuroimaging and creativity-related studies in a disorder characterized by an excess of dopamine in the brain.

Conclusions: Given the special cerebral configuration of these patients, neuropsychological alterations, especially in executive functions, should be expected.

Introduction: Interpretation of the performance on cognitive tests for neuropsychological assessment in multiple sclerosis (MS) differs according to the educational level of the examinee.

Aims: To provide normative data for the Brief Neuropsychological Battery (BNB) for MS stratified by age and education, as well as to demonstrate the utility of the battery for discriminating between healthy controls and patients with MS.

Subjects And Methods: Data from 701 healthy volunteers from the original normative sample were stratified by age and education using regression analyses of standard scores.

Therapeutic approaches against multiple myeloma (MM) have largely changed during the past decade. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and licensing of immunomodulators and proteasome inhibitors have resulted in better response and increased overall survival rates compared to previous conventional therapies. To assess the impact that these new strategies have had on outcome of patients with symptomatic MM in Spain, we conducted an epidemiological retrospective analysis of 338 newly diagnosed patients with stage II-III MM who started first-line treatment over a 2-yr period (2003-2005) by collecting data from their medical records.

September 2015

Laboratory of Immunovirology, Clinic Unit of Infectious Diseases, Microbiology and Preventive Medicine, Institute of Biomedicine of Seville, IBiS, Virgen del Rocío University Hospital/CSIC/University of Seville, Seville 41013, Spain. Electronic address:

Our aim was to analyze the virological response to a combined antiretroviral therapy started after Maraviroc Clinical Test (MCT) in naïve HIV-infected patients. Forty-one patients were exposed to MCT, based on an 8-day MVC monotherapy. If undetectability or a viral load reduction >1 log10 HIV-RNA copies/ml was achieved, a MVC-containing cART was prescribed.

Different sensitization to storage mites depending on the co-exposure to house dust mites.

Ann Allergy Asthma Immunol

January 2015

R&D Department. Laboratorios LETI SL, Tres Cantos, Madrid, Spain. Electronic address:

Background: Co-sensitization to house dust mites (HDMs) and storage mites (SMs) is very frequent, although the clinical relevance is not well established.

Objective: To describe the pattern of sensitization and immunologic characterization of patients with positive skin prick test reactions to HDMs and SMs in 4 areas of Spain, selected according to high exposure to HDMs and variable exposure to SMs.

Methods: One hundred sixty-nine individuals with positive skin prick test reactions to HDMs and SMs were included.

A 76 year old male patient with a history of implantation of a total hip arthroplasty Perfecta (Orthomet(®)), who presented with an iliac fossa mass, increased diameter of the thigh, and pain during hip flexion and extension. CT and ultrasound show the presence of a giant cystic mass in left iliac fossa about 7 cm in diameter next to the prosthesis. A pseudo-tumour secondary to wear debris after placement of a total arthroplasty is rare.

Background: Date palm pollen allergy is frequently associated with polysensitisation. Observational studies have suggested that date-palm-sensitised individuals could be included in a distinct group of polysensitised patients. The objectives of the study were to analyse the clinical characteristics of a group of patients diagnosed of date-palm pollen allergy and to compare them with pollen allergic patients without date-palm sensitisation.

Chronic inflammatory diseases and infections are a major cause of hyporesponse to erythropoiesis-stimulating factors. We conducted this prospective study in 107 patients in haemodialysis with dialysis liquid that was potentially contaminated from a bacteriological perspective in order to test the hypothesis that ultrapure dialysis liquid can improve the response to treatment with darbepoetin and reduce inflammatory markers. These patients had to have been stable in the last 8 weeks in relation to haemoglobin level and the administered dose of darbepoetin.

Nasoalverolar cyst are nonodontogenic maxillary cysts, rare and benign, which are more common in females and blacks. Their diagnosis can be established mainly on the clinical presentation, being usually asymptomatic during several years until they are large enough to cause cosmetic deformities and/or nasal obstruction, with asymmetrical alar flare. The treatment of choice is the complete surgical excision via a sublabial approach.
