Background: There is still no reliable biomarker for the diagnosis of pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) is a tumor marker only recommended for pancreatic adenocarcinoma follow-up. One of the clinical problems lies in distinguishing between this cancer and other benign pancreatic diseases such as chronic pancreatitis.

Faecalibacterium prausnitzii depletion in intestinal diseases has been extensively reported, but little is known about intraspecies variability. This work aims to determine if subjects with gastrointestinal disease host mucosa-associated F. prausnitzii populations different from those hosted by healthy individuals.

Background: The composition of the intestinal microbiota is altered in Crohn's disease [CD] patients. The objective of this study was to evaluate the qualitative and quantitative changes in the microbiota of CD patients in 3 months of treatment with adalimumab [ADA], and determine whether or not these changes are produced towards the recovery of the normal, healthy-like microbiota.

Methods: The microbiota composition, and the Faecalibacterium prausnitzii / Escherichia coli quantitative relationship as dysbiosis indicator, were studied at baseline [T0], one month [T1], and 3 months [T3] after starting treatment using a polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis [PCR-DGGE] of 16S rRNA gene fragments and quantitative PCR, respectively, in rectal mucosal biopsies from 15 CD patients and four healthy subjects.

Background: Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) diagnosis requires comprehensive examination of the patient. Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Escherichia coli have been reported as representatives of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) dysbiosis. The aim was to determine whether or not quantification of these species can be used as a complementary tool either for diagnostic or prognostic purposes.

July 2014

Institute of Biomedical Investigation of Girona (IdIBGi), IAS Research Unit, Salt, Catalonia, Spain; Department of Medicine, University of Girona, Girona, Catalonia, Spain.

Objectives: Psychotropic drugs are usually prescribed to deal with behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia, especially when nonpharmacologic approaches are not available or have limited efficacy. Poor outcomes and serious adverse events of the drugs used must be addressed, and risk-benefit ratios need to be considered. The aim of this longitudinal study was to describe the evolution of dispensation of psychotropic drugs in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and to identify the associated demographic and clinical variables.

September 2012

Unitat de Recerca, Institut d'Assistència Sanitària, Girona, Spain ; Unitat de Valoració de la Memòria i les Demències, Hospital Santa Caterina de Salt, Salt, Spain.

Background: The most frequent behavioral manifestations in Parkinson's disease (PD) are attributed to the dopaminergic dysregulation syndrome (DDS), which is considered to be secondary to the iatrogenic effects of the drugs that replace dopamine. Over the past few years some cases of patients improving their creative abilities after starting treatment with dopaminergic pharmaceuticals have been reported. These effects have not been clearly associated to DDS, but a relationship has been pointed out.

September 2012

Unidad de Resonancia Magnética, Clínica Girona, Girona, España; Servicio de Radiodiagnóstico, Hospital Santa Caterina, Salt, Girona, España; Departamento de Ciencias Médicas, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad de Girona, Girona, España. Electronic address:

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the technique of choice in the diagnosis, staging, and follow-up of musculoskeletal tumors. Diffusion imaging is a new functional MRI technique that provides information that is complementary to that obtained in conventional MRI sequences. Diffusion imaging has proven useful in different clinical situations like the characterization of disease involving the bone marrow (bone metastases, benign fractures, or hematological disease), the evaluation of tumors of the bones and soft tissues, and the monitoring of the response to treatment in patients with tumors.

October 2009

Unitat de Pneumologia, Servei de Medicina Interna, Hospital Santa Caterina, Salt, Girona, Departamento de Medicina Interna, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Barcelona, España.

Background And Objectives: Dynamic hyperinflation (DH) and expiratory flow limitation (EFL) are physiologically linked and seem to be involved in the genesis of dyspnea and the quality of life (QL) impairment in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Advanced COPD patients often show expiratory muscles dysfunction that could be involved in DH development.

Aim: Study the relationships between expiratory muscle dysfunction and DH, and their association with dyspnea and QL, in advanced COPD.
