Delayed tongue necrosis simultaneous with bilateral osteoradionecrosis of the jaw secondary to head and neck irradiation.

Oral Surg Oral Med Oral Pathol Oral Radiol

February 2017

Department of Oral Surgery, Universidade Sagrado Coração, Bauru, São Paulo, Brazil.

We present a rare case of massive tongue necrosis occurring simultaneously with bilateral osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the jaw in a patient with a history of treatment, including surgery and postoperative radiotherapy, for a retromolar trigone carcinoma 8 years earlier. There is a distinct possibility that the extractions and administration of local anesthesia with a vasoconstrictor contributed to the onset of ORN; together, these events may have influenced the blood supply to the tongue. A glossectomy was performed after hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

We report the case of a 2-year-old child who survived an acute episode of severe spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage with clinical and radiological signs of intracranial hypertension and transtentorial herniation. The patient underwent emergency surgery to drain the hematoma, and a catheter was inserted to monitor intracranial pressure. In the initial computed tomography analysis performed prior to hematoma drainage, a brain cyst was evident contralateral to the hematoma, which, based on the analysis by the care team, possibly helped to avoid a worse outcome because the cyst accommodated the brain after the massive hemorrhage.

Incubation Period and Early Natural History Events of the Acute Form of Paracoccidioidomycosis: Lessons from Patients with a Single Paracoccidioides spp. Exposure.

Mycopathologia

June 2016

Laboratories of Medical Investigation in Dermatology and Immunodeficiencies and Medical Mycology, University of São Paulo Medical School, Avenida Doutor Arnaldo, 455. Cerqueira Cesar, São Paulo, Brazil.

Unlabelled: Several aspects of the natural history of paracoccidioidomycosis are still poorly understood. Different from the most prevalent, chronic form of the disease, the acute form represents a continuum from the initial respiratory infection to the full-blown disease, thus providing an opportunity to elucidate the pathogenesis of the early phase of this mycosis. We describe, for the first time, two patients with a single time point exposure to Paracoccidioides spp.
