Division of Neuroscience Critical Care, Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to compare stroke incidences and mortality rates in critically ill COVID-19 patients from low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) and high-income countries (HICs).
  • The results showed that stroke incidence was significantly higher in LMICs (35.7 per 1000 admitted-days) compared to HICs (17.6 per 1000 admitted-days), with patients from LMICs also facing higher mortality rates (43.6% vs. 29.2%).
  • The findings highlight the need for better stroke diagnosis and healthcare resource allocation in LMICs, as both higher income status and the presence of stroke are associated with increased risk of death

Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) have surfaced as a promising group of anticancer agents employing the precise targeting capacity of monoclonal antibodies to transport highly effective cytotoxic payloads. Compared to conventional chemotherapy, they aim to selectively eradicate cancer cells while minimizing off-target toxicity on healthy tissues. An increasing body of evidence has provided support for the efficacy of ADCs in treating breast cancer across various contexts and tumor subtypes, resulting in significant changes in clinical practice.

Clin Colorectal Cancer

March 2024

Centro de Investigação Translacional em Oncologia- CTO. Instituto do Câncer do Estado de São Paulo-ICESP. Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo- FMUSP, Sao Paulo, Brazil; Comprehensive Center for Precision Oncology, Universidade de São Paulo, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Background: Primary tumor sidedness (PTS) is an independent prognostic factor in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC), with a worse prognosis for right-sided tumors. There are limited data on the prognostic impact of PTS in stage III CRC. The main objective of this study was to analyze the prognostic impact of PTS in stage III CRC.

Purpose: To report the 60-month safety and effectiveness results of a multicenter, prospective, randomized controlled trial comparing the ZILVER PTX paclitaxel-eluting stent to prosthetic above-the-knee bypass for the treatment of symptomatic TransAtlantic Inter-Society Consensus (TASC) C and D femoropopliteal lesions.

Materials And Methods: Patients were enrolled between October 2013 and July 2017. One of the secondary outcomes was primary patency at 60 months, defined as no evidence of binary restenosis or occlusion within the target lesion or bypass graft based on a duplex ultrasound peak systolic velocity ratio < 2.

Objective: To characterize the epidemiology, identify trends in prevalence, seasonality, and risk factors for orofacial clefts (OFC), selecting the São Paulo state (SPS) population database.

Design: A population-based study to estimate the OFC prevalence trends in recent years, stratified by maternal age and SPS geographical clusters.

Setting: All live births (LB) with OFC in SPS from 2008-2019.

Background: To report the 3-year safety and effectiveness results of a multicenter, prospective, randomized controlled trial comparing the ZILVER PTX paclitaxel-eluting stent to surgical bypass and to conduct a health economic analysis up to 3-year follow-up of the two treatment modalities.

Methods: This is a study in symptomatic TransAtlantic Inter-Society Consensus (TASC) C and D femoropopliteal lesions comparing endovascular ZILVER PTX stenting vs. surgical bypass surgery using a prosthetic graft (ClinicalTrials.

Background: The estimated prevalence of esophageal atresia (EA) is 1 in 2500-4500 live births (LBs). Researchers have already identified risk factors, but the mechanisms are still unknown. The aim of this study is to identify EA prevalence trends and its risk factors in the São Paulo State (SPS) population database.

Background: Risk-reducing operations are an important part of the management of hereditary predisposition to cancer. In selected cases, they can considerably reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with cancer in this population.

Objectives: The Brazilian Society of Surgical Oncology (BSSO) developed this guideline to establish national benchmarks for cancer risk-reducing operations.

Article Synopsis
  • Risk-reducing surgeries are key for managing hereditary cancer risks, significantly lowering the associated health issues and mortality.
  • The Brazilian Society of Surgical Oncology developed guidelines to provide national standards for these surgical procedures.
  • A team of experts reviewed literature and conducted discussions to create recommendations, achieving consensus on various risk-reduction surgeries like mastectomy and hysterectomy.

Background: Congenital heart diseases (CHD) are the most common type of birth defects, affecting millions of newborns every year; no prevalence data are available in São Paulo State, Brazil's most populous state. The objective is to identify trends in prevalence and risk factors for CHD in São Paulo State, Brazil.

Methods: We developed a population-based study to estimate the CHD trend of prevalence in recent years, stratified by maternal age and geographical clusters, using all cases of CHD identified by the Live Births Information System (SINASC-Sistema de Informação Sobre Nascidos Vivos) from January 1, 2005, to December 31, 2018.

Objective: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused a global health crisis and may have affected healthcare-associated infection (HAI) prevention strategies. We evaluated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on HAI incidence in Brazilian intensive care units (ICUs).

Methods: In this ecological study, we compared adult patients admitted to the ICU from April through June 2020 (pandemic period) with the same period in 2019 (prepandemic period) in 21 Brazilian hospitals.

Objective: To evaluate whether there was any impact on the number of pediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation runs and survival rates in the years subsequent to the 2009 pandemic.

Methods: We studied two different periods of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support for respiratory failure in children by analyzing datasets from the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization. Autoregressive integrated moving average models were constructed to estimate the effect of the pandemic.

MRI of Penile Prostheses: The Challenge of Diagnosing Postsurgical Complications.

Radiographics

March 2022

From the Department of Diagnostic Imaging, Division of Abdominal Radiology, Hospital Santa Catarina, Rua Artur Prado 394, São Paulo, SP 01322-000, Brazil (A.C.V.R.U., L.M.P., J.d.Á.F.); and Department of Diagnostic Imaging, Division of Abdominal Radiology, Hospital Beneficência Portuguesa, São Paulo, Brazil (A.C.V.R.U., C.P.A., M.H.N.I.P., K.S.A., N.B.N.G.).

Penile implants are surgically inserted devices used for the treatment of erectile disfunction. Improvements in surgical techniques and in the manufacturing of these implants have reduced the risk of intra- and postoperative complications and increased the popularity and use of this therapeutic option. Routine imaging is not recommended before penile prosthesis surgery.

Grade III obesity is defined as excessive accumulation of fat in the body in a person with a BMI>40kg/m and is related to a series of comorbidities. It is therefore of fundamental importance that appropriate treatment is adopted to reduce its harmful effects on health. Laparoscopic vertical gastrectomy is well-established for treatment of grade III obesity.
