Postoperative computed tomography of insufflated lung specimens obtained by video-assisted thoracic surgery: detection and margin assessment of pulmonary nodules.

Objective: To investigate the utility of computed tomography (CT) scans to detect and assess the margin status of pulmonary nodules that were insufflated after being resected by video-assisted thoracic surgery.

Materials And Methods: This was a novel multicenter study conducted at two national referral centers for thoracic diseases. Patients suspected of having lung cancer underwent video-assisted thoracic surgery for the resection of pulmonary nodules, which were submitted to postoperative CT.

Effects of Bacterial Urinary Tract Infection on Clinical Outcome and Survival of Kidney Transplant Patients.

Background: There is no consensus on whether the development of urinary tract infections (UTIs) leads to high mortality or graft loss in kidney transplant patients. A high incidence of multidrug resistant (MDR) infections was observed worldwide and is associated with these complications. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of UTIs on the clinical outcome and survival in kidney transplant patients.

Acetylcholine, Fatty Acids, and Lipid Mediators Are Linked to COVID-19 Severity.

Lipid and cholinergic mediators are inflammatory regulators, but their role in the immunopathology of COVID-19 is still unclear. Here, we used human blood and tracheal aspirate (TA) to investigate whether acetylcholine (Ach), fatty acids (FAs), and their derived lipid mediators (LMs) are associated with COVID-19 severity. First, we analyzed the perturbation profile induced by SARS-CoV-2 infection in the transcriptional profile of genes related to the ACh and FA/LM pathways.

Malignancy Diseases in Kidney Transplantation, Clinical Outcomes, Patient, and Allograft Survival: A Case-Control Study.

Background: Malignancy is a well-known complication in patients after kidney transplantation (KT), but its effect on posttransplant outcomes, allograft, and patient survival remains unexplored. The aim of this study is to report the impact of the comorbidity on clinical outcome, function, and failure of an allograft kidney.

Methods: This case-control study included 101 KT patients.

Impact of COVID-19 on the surgical profile of vascular surgery patients at a tertiary hospital in Curitiba, Brazil.

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare services reduced the number of elective procedures performed. Vascular surgery patients are a group at risk of contracting severe forms of the infection, but are also susceptible to complications of their underlying diseases if they do not receive routine care. It is therefore necessary to understand the direct and indirect impacts and consequences of the pandemic on vascular patients.

Objective: This article presents a mobile application model for the treatment tracking of in-hospital wounds.

Methods: A survey of the literature on mobile apps for wound monitoring was carried out. Health professionals were interviewed and wound forms were analyzed to synthesize the application's fields and features.

Patients with COVID-19 predominantly have a respiratory tract infection and acute lung failure is the most severe complication. While the molecular basis of SARS-CoV-2 immunopathology is still unknown, it is well established that lung infection is associated with hyper-inflammation and tissue damage. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) contribute to tissue destruction in many pathological situations, and the activity of MMPs in the lung leads to the release of bioactive mediators with inflammatory properties.

Background: Kidney transplantation is the treatment of choice for end-stage kidney disease, and a second transplantation becomes an opportunity for a better chance for long-term survival and quality of life. Background: Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are designed to help health professionals provide patients with excellent medical care. The last critical appraisal of CPGs on the treatment of psoriasis evaluated publications up to 2009, but several new guidelines have been published since and their methodological quality remains unclear.

Objective: The aim of this study was to systematically evaluate the quality of CPGs on the treatment of psoriasis published between 2010 and 2020 using the Appraisal Guidelines Research and Evaluation II (AGREE II) tool.

Background: Hemodialysis (HD) treatment affects functioning, physical activity level, clinical biomarkers, and body composition. However, the association between these variables with functioning, considering International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) domains remains unclear. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the possible association between physical activity, biomarkers, and body composition with functioning in HD patients in reference to the ICF.

Guidelines for Parkinson's disease treatment: consensus from the Movement Disorders Scientific Department of the Brazilian Academy of Neurology - motor symptoms.

The treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD) is challenging, especially since it is considered highly individualized. The Brazilian Academy of Neurology has recognized the need to disseminate knowledge about the management of PD treatment, adapting the best evidence to the Brazilian reality. Thus, the main published treatment guidelines were reviewed based on the recommendations of group from the Movement Disorders Scientific Department of the Brazilian Academy of Neurology.

Objective: A multicentric, cross-sectional study was carried out to determine the prevalence and risk factors for Coronavirus disease 2019 in medical students and residents from four universities and affiliated hospitals in Brazil.

Methods: A survey about contamination risk and symptoms was sent to all participants through email and WhatsApp. Prevalence was measured by the self-report of positive polymerase chain reaction or serological test.

Volar Wrist Ganglion Originating at the Dorsal Scapholunate Ligament - A Report of Two Patients.

Ganglion cysts are common wrist lesions and, in about 20% of patients, they appear on a volar and radial location. Volar ganglions typically arise from the volar radiocarpal joint in the interval between the radioscaphocapitate (RSC) and the long radiolunate (LRL) ligaments. We report two patients with volar and radial ganglion cysts that originated at the dorsum of the scapholunate (SL) ligament.

sTREM-1 Predicts Disease Severity and Mortality in COVID-19 Patients: Involvement of Peripheral Blood Leukocytes and MMP-8 Activity.

Uncontrolled inflammatory responses play a critical role in coronavirus disease (COVID-19). In this context, because the triggering-receptor expressed on myeloid cells-1 (TREM-1) is considered an intrinsic amplifier of inflammatory signals, this study investigated the role of soluble TREM-1 (sTREM-1) as a biomarker of the severity and mortality of COVID-19. Based on their clinical scores, we enrolled COVID-19 positive patients ( = 237) classified into mild, moderate, severe, and critical groups.
