Background: There is no consensus on whether the development of urinary tract infections (UTIs) leads to high mortality or graft loss in kidney transplant patients. A high incidence of multidrug resistant (MDR) infections was observed worldwide and is associated with these complications. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of UTIs on the clinical outcome and survival in kidney transplant patients.

Lipid and cholinergic mediators are inflammatory regulators, but their role in the immunopathology of COVID-19 is still unclear. Here, we used human blood and tracheal aspirate (TA) to investigate whether acetylcholine (Ach), fatty acids (FAs), and their derived lipid mediators (LMs) are associated with COVID-19 severity. First, we analyzed the perturbation profile induced by SARS-CoV-2 infection in the transcriptional profile of genes related to the ACh and FA/LM pathways.

Background: Malignancy is a well-known complication in patients after kidney transplantation (KT), but its effect on posttransplant outcomes, allograft, and patient survival remains unexplored. The aim of this study is to report the impact of the comorbidity on clinical outcome, function, and failure of an allograft kidney.
Methods: This case-control study included 101 KT patients.

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare services reduced the number of elective procedures performed. Vascular surgery patients are a group at risk of contracting severe forms of the infection, but are also susceptible to complications of their underlying diseases if they do not receive routine care. It is therefore necessary to understand the direct and indirect impacts and consequences of the pandemic on vascular patients.

Patients with COVID-19 predominantly have a respiratory tract infection and acute lung failure is the most severe complication. While the molecular basis of SARS-CoV-2 immunopathology is still unknown, it is well established that lung infection is associated with hyper-inflammation and tissue damage. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) contribute to tissue destruction in many pathological situations, and the activity of MMPs in the lung leads to the release of bioactive mediators with inflammatory properties.

Background: Kidney transplantation is the treatment of choice for end-stage kidney disease, and a second transplantation becomes an opportunity for a better chance for long-term survival and quality of life. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes and graft survival of patients transplanted a second time in comparison with single kidney transplant patients.
Methods: This retrospective observational study was conducted using a cohort of kidney transplant patients from 2008 to 2018.

Purpose: International comparisons of patient demographics, tumor characteristics, and survival can shed light on areas for health care system improvement. The International Society of Pediatric Oncology Wilms Tumor 2001 trial/study registered patients through national clinical study groups in Western Europe and Brazil. This retrospective post hoc analysis of the International Society of Pediatric Oncology Wilms Tumor 2001 database aims to make visible and suggest reasons for any variations in outcomes.

Background: Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are designed to help health professionals provide patients with excellent medical care. The last critical appraisal of CPGs on the treatment of psoriasis evaluated publications up to 2009, but several new guidelines have been published since and their methodological quality remains unclear.
Objective: The aim of this study was to systematically evaluate the quality of CPGs on the treatment of psoriasis published between 2010 and 2020 using the Appraisal Guidelines Research and Evaluation II (AGREE II) tool.

The ultrarare hepatoblastoma (HB) is the most common pediatric liver cancer. HB risk is related to a few rare syndromes, and the molecular bases remain elusive for most cases. We investigated the burden of rare damaging germline variants in 30 Brazilian patients with HB and the presence of additional clinical signs.

Different results are described after atrial fibrillation ablation and multiple predictors of recurrence are well established. Evaluate and analyze if heart rate increase (HRI) during a first atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation with low-power long-duration (LPLD) and subsequently with high-power short-duration (HPSD) can impact. Retrospectively analyzed 340 consecutive patients (pts) undergoing first AF ablation.

Background: Hemodialysis (HD) treatment affects functioning, physical activity level, clinical biomarkers, and body composition. However, the association between these variables with functioning, considering International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) domains remains unclear. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the possible association between physical activity, biomarkers, and body composition with functioning in HD patients in reference to the ICF.

Ganglion cysts are common wrist lesions and, in about 20% of patients, they appear on a volar and radial location. Volar ganglions typically arise from the volar radiocarpal joint in the interval between the radioscaphocapitate (RSC) and the long radiolunate (LRL) ligaments. We report two patients with volar and radial ganglion cysts that originated at the dorsum of the scapholunate (SL) ligament.

Uncontrolled inflammatory responses play a critical role in coronavirus disease (COVID-19). In this context, because the triggering-receptor expressed on myeloid cells-1 (TREM-1) is considered an intrinsic amplifier of inflammatory signals, this study investigated the role of soluble TREM-1 (sTREM-1) as a biomarker of the severity and mortality of COVID-19. Based on their clinical scores, we enrolled COVID-19 positive patients ( = 237) classified into mild, moderate, severe, and critical groups.
