Objective: Idiopathic central precocious puberty (CPP) precipitates epiphyseal fusion of growth plates in long bones, leading to reduced adult stature. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues (GnRHa) are the treatment of choice for idiopathic CPP, but their benefit on height gain is unclear. We aimed to elucidate the effects of GnRHa treatment on adult height in girls with idiopathic CPP.

Genetic Descriptive, Genetic and Prevention Epidemiology Group, Biomedical Research Institute of Girona (IDIBGI), Spain, School of Medicine, University of Girona (UdG), Spain, Epidemiology Unit and Girona Cancer Registry, Oncology Coordination Plan Department of Health Government of Catalonia, Catalan Institute of Oncology, Girona, Spain.

The prevalence of BRAF mutation has been reported in between 38% and 48% of melanoma patients, based on mainly Stage III or metastatic melanoma, however, information based on population-based studies is scarce. We performed a population-based retrospective cohort study to determine the prevalence of the BRAF mutation in patients diagnosed with in situ and infiltrating cutaneous malignant melanoma in the province of Girona between 2009 and 2011. Using the database of the Girona Cancer Registry, we performed BRAF mutation analysis based on paraffin-embedded tissue.

Article Synopsis
  • Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a major cause of disability in both children and adults, and this study aimed to identify factors influencing clinical remission and relapse based on treatment methods and JIA types.
  • A total of 206 JIA patients were analyzed, revealing that 70% achieved clinical remission at least once, with 29% maintaining remission without medication; better outcomes were noted for those on synthetic DMARDs alone, particularly associated with specific patient characteristics.
  • The study concluded that a significant portion of JIA patients can reach remission over time, with a lower relapse risk observed when dosages were reduced before stopping treatment, especially in those with persistent oligoarticular JIA.

Background: Patients who receive noninvasive ventilation (NIV) in the emergency department (ED) sometimes have a limitation of life support treatment (LLST). The characteristics and prognosis in these patients may be worse, however, few studies have been carried out in this respect.

Objective: Analyze the differences between patients receiving NIV in the ED with LLST (NIV-LLST) or without LLST (NIV-noLLST) and their impact on in-hospital mortality, as well as investigate in-hospital mortality in the NIV-LLST group.

Background: Inhaled antibiotics allow the delivery of higher drug concentrations at the site of infection without the systemic adverse effects observed with the use of parenteral or oral antibiotics. These antibiotics have shown to decrease the number of exacerbations, reduce bacterial load or improve pulmonary function in several chronic respiratory conditions.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to describe changes in the bacteriology of sputum in patients with chronic bronchial infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa treated with nebulised colistin.

Microbe-Dependent Induction of IL-9 by CLA T Cells in Psoriasis and Relationship with IL-17A.

J Invest Dermatol

March 2018

Translational Immunology, Department of Cellular Biology, Physiology and Immunology, Faculty of Biology, Universitat de Barcelona, Spain. Electronic address:

IL-9 is present in psoriatic lesions and is produced by lymphocytes. However, it is not known whether this cytokine is induced by relevant pathogenic triggers of psoriasis, such as Streptococcus pyogenes. Here we addressed the production of IL-9 in response to various pathogens in a psoriatic ex vivo model.

Objectives: To analyze whether the introduction of nebulized colistin in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and infection with (PA) is associated with a decrease of the number and duration of severe exacerbations.

Materials And Methods: Thirty six patients with COPD and infection with PA treated with nebulized colistin attending a day hospital during a 5-year (January 2010-December 2014) period were prospectively included. Repeated-measures -tests were used to assess whether the introduction of colistin was associated with changes in the number of exacerbations or the length of the hospitalizations, comparing for each patient the year prior to the introduction of colistin with the year after.

Background: Guttate psoriasis (GP) is characterized by acute onset of small, rounded psoriatic lesions. Although this particular phenotype of psoriasis is usually associated with streptococcal throat infections and mainly occurs in HLA-Cw6(+) patients, the specific immunologic response to this innate stimulus that causes these skin lesions is poorly understood.

Objective: This study aims to elucidate how key cellular elements of patients with GP respond to Streptococcus pyogenes and whether this initial immune response is favored by the genetic and environmental background of these patients.
