Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) is a severe developmental and epileptic encephalopathy (DEE) characterized by multiple types of drug-resistant seizures (which must include tonic seizures) with classical onset before 8 years (although some cases with later onset have also been described), abnormal electroencephalographic features, and cognitive and behavioral impairments. Management and treatment of LGS are challenging, due to associated comorbidities and the treatment resistance of seizures. A panel of five epileptologists reconvened to provide updated guidance and treatment algorithms for LGS, incorporating recent advancements in antiseizure medications (ASMs) and understanding of DEEs.

FGF15 and its human orthologue, FGF19, are members of the endocrine FGF family and are secreted by ileal enterocytes in response to bile acids. FGF15/19 mainly targets the liver, but recent studies indicate that it also regulates skeletal muscle mass and adipose tissue plasticity. The aim of this study was to determine the role(s) of the enterokine FGF15/19 during the development of cardiac hypertrophy.

Purpose: This retrospective chart review study (GWEP20052) evaluated plant-derived highly purified cannabidiol (CBD; Epidyolex®; 100 mg/mL oral solution) use without clobazam as add-on therapy in patients aged ≥2 years with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) or Dravet syndrome (DS) enrolled in a European Early Access Program.
Methods: Data were extracted from patient charts covering a period starting 3 months before CBD treatment and concluding after 12 months of CBD treatment, or sooner if a patient discontinued CBD or started clobazam.
Results: Of 114 enrolled patients, data were available for 107 (92 LGS, 15 DS) who received CBD without clobazam for ≥3 months.

Background: Peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVC) are commonly used in hospital worldwide. However, PIVC are not exempt from complications. Catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) increase morbidity and mortality rates, and costs for the healthcare organization.

To study the reversibility of cold-induced cardiac hypertrophy and the role of autophagy in this process. Chronic exposure to cold is known to cause cardiac hypertrophy independent of blood pressure elevation. The reversibility of this process and the molecular mechanisms involved are unknown.

Meteorin-like/Meteorin-β (Metrnl/Metrnβ) is a secreted protein produced by skeletal muscle and adipose tissue that exerts metabolic actions that improve glucose metabolism. The role of Metrnβ in cardiac disease is completely unknown. Here, we show that Metrnβ-null mice exhibit asymmetrical cardiac hypertrophy, fibrosis, and enhanced signs of cardiac dysfunction in response to isoproterenol-induced cardiac hypertrophy and aging.

Alcoholic cardiomyopathy (ACM) resulting from chronic alcohol misuse is one of the main contributors leading to heart failure and cardiovascular mortality. Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a well-established cardioprotective factor. We aimed to study the role of FGF21 in experimentally induced models and clinical affected patients with cardiac damage due to chronic alcohol consumption.

Extrapolation of efficacy data from adults to children is accepted for focal epilepsy - the antiepileptic drug, lacosamide, has been approved for the treatment of children ≥4 years of age on this basis. Since many small-scale, open-label studies are reported in the literature before approval, a systematic review was conducted to ascertain whether results of these could be used to support extrapolation in epilepsy in the future. In the absence of randomised trials, a second analysis was conducted for reports on lacosamide use in adults with generalized epilepsies.

The objective of this study was to gather evidence-based data on the educational needs of neuropediatricians. A needs assessment was conducted to identify the clinical challenges of physicians when diagnosing, medically treating, and managing pediatric patients with epilepsy; which could be addressed through educational interventions. A two-phase mixed-methods approach was used to conduct the needs assessment in Germany, Spain, and the US.

Background: Behavioral testing provides an essential approach in further developing our understanding of brain structure and function. The aim of our study was to outline a more expanded approach to cognition- and anxiety-related behavior in the rabbit.
Methods: Twenty-one 70-day old rabbits (13 female, 8 male) were exposed to open field test, dark-light box test and object recognition testing with variations in inter-trial-interval, olfactory recognition and object location testing.

Objective: To evaluate the perinatal effects of a prenatal therapy based on intra-amniotic nutritional supplementation in a rabbit model of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR).
Methods: IUGR was surgically induced in pregnant rabbits at gestational day 25 by ligating 40-50% of uteroplacental vessels of each gestational sac. At the same time, modified-parenteral nutrition solution (containing glucose, amino acids and electrolytes) was injected into the amniotic sac of nearly half of the IUGR fetuses (IUGR-T group n = 106), whereas sham injections were performed in the rest of fetuses (IUGR group n = 118).

Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) is a severe epileptic and developmental encephalopathy that is associated with a high rate of morbidity and mortality. It is characterized by multiple seizure types, abnormal electroencephalographic features, and intellectual disability. Although intellectual disability and associated behavioral problems are characteristic of LGS, they are not necessarily present at its outset and are therefore not part of its diagnostic criteria.

Background: The profile of grey matter abnormalities and related white-matter pathology in schizoaffective disorder has only been studied to a limited extent. The aim of this study was to identify grey- and white-matter abnormalities in patients with schizoaffective disorder using complementary structural imaging techniques.
Methods: Forty-five patients meeting Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-Fourth Edition criteria and Research Diagnostic Criteria for schizoaffective disorder and 45 matched healthy controls underwent structural-T1 and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging to enable surface-based brain morphometry and diffusion tensor imaging analyses.

Objective: Brain structural changes in schizoaffective disorder, and how far they resemble those seen in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, have only been studied to a limited extent.
Method: Forty-five patients meeting DSM-IV and RDC criteria for schizoaffective disorder, groups of patients with 45 matched schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and 45 matched healthy controls were examined using voxel-based morphometry (VBM).
Results: Analyses comparing each patient group with the healthy control subjects found that the patients with schizoaffective disorder and the patients with schizophrenia showed widespread and overlapping areas of significant volume reduction, but the patients with bipolar disorder did not.

The main objectives of this study were to describe the characteristics of children with influenza infection during the postpandemic outbreak, and to compare sociodemographic and clinical data between patients who required hospitalization and those managed on an outpatient basis with a matched case-control study design. This is a multicentre paediatric study in Spain that included patients aged 6 month to 18 years in whom influenza infection was confirmed by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction between December 2010 and March 2011. Among the 143 admitted patients, the main reason for admission was respiratory failure (123/143).

The control group consisted of 50 patient, all with two PSA determinations with no urological manipulation between them. The study group had 50 patient, who underwent digital examination 24 hours before the second PSA determination.
