Objective To demonstrate that postoperative computed tomography (CT) is not needed if navigation is used to determine the rotational position of the femoral component during total knee replacement (TKR). Methods Preoperative CT, navigational, and postoperative CT data of 70 TKR procedures were analysed. The correlation between the rotational angulation of the femur measured by CT and that measured by perioperative navigation was examined.

Clinical Subgroups in Bilateral Meniere Disease.

Front Neurol

October 2016

Otology and Neurotology Group CTS495, Department of Genomic Medicine - Centro de Genómica e Investigación Oncológica - Pfizer/Universidad de Granada/Junta de Andalucía (GENYO), Granada, Spain; Department of Otolaryngology, Instituto de Investigación Biosanitaria ibs.GRANADA, Complejo Hospitalario Universidad de Granada (CHUGRA), Granada, Spain.

Meniere disease (MD) is a heterogeneous clinical condition characterized by sensorineural hearing loss, episodic vestibular symptoms, and tinnitus associated with several comorbidities, such as migraine or autoimmune disorders (AD). The frequency of bilateral involvement may range from 5 to 50%, and it depends on the duration of the disease. We have performed a two-step cluster analysis in 398 patients with bilateral MD (BMD) to identify the best predictors to define clinical subgroups with a potential different etiology to improve the phenotyping of BMD and to develop new treatments.

Laryngeal cysts are largely asymptomatic and typically described in the context of incidental discovery on routine laryngoscopy. These cysts, in adults are even rarer and can have catastrophic consequences in an anaesthetized patient if airway management is inappropriate. We describe a case of difficult endotracheal intubation and the treatment of an adult patient with an asymptomatic, giant vallecular cyst that was discovered during rapid-sequence induction of general anesthesia in urgent surgery.

Prenatal mercury exposure and birth outcomes.

Environ Res

November 2016

Spanish Consortium for Research on Epidemiology and Public Health (CIBERESP), Spain; Epidemiology and Environmental Health Joint Research Unit, FISABIO-Universitat Jaume I-Universitat de València, Valencia, Spain.

Background: Results regarding the association between mercury exposure and anthropometry at birth, gestational length and placental weight are inconsistent, as is the role of seafood intake in these associations.

Objective: We assessed whether prenatal mercury exposure is associated with anthropometry at birth, placental weight and gestational length in a population with a relatively high exposure to mercury from seafood consumption.

Methods: Total mercury (T-Hg) was determined in cord blood from 1869 newborns with birth outcome measures, within the Spanish multicenter INMA cohort from 2004 to 2008.

Menière's disease.

Handb Clin Neurol

February 2017

Otology and Neurotology Group, Department of Genomic Medicine, Centre for Genomics and Oncological Research (GENYO), Pfizer-University of Granada-Junta de Andalucia, Granada, Spain; Department of Otolaryngology, Complejo Hospitalario Universitario de Granada, Granada, Spain. Electronic address:

Menière's disease (MD) is a chronic multifactorial disorder of the inner ear characterized by episodic vestibular symptoms associated with sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus, and aural pressure. Epidemiologic and genomic evidence supports a genetic susceptibility with multiple biochemical pathways involved, including the endocrine system, innate immune response, and autonomic nervous system. Allergens, infectious agents, vascular events, or genetic factors could modify inner-ear homeostasis and trigger MD.

Factors Associated with Fatality during the Intensive Phase of Anti-Tuberculosis Treatment.

PLoS One

August 2017

Programa Integrado de Investigación en Tuberculosis (PII TB), Fundación Respira de la Sociedad Española de Neumología y Cirugía Torácica (SEPAR), Barcelona, Spain.

Objective: To determine the case-fatality rate (CFR) at the end of the intensive phase of tuberculosis (TB) treatment, and factors associated with fatality.

Methods: TB patients diagnosed between 2006 and 2013 were followed-up during treatment. We computed the CFR at the end of the intensive phase of TB treatment, and the incidence of death per 100 person-days (pd) of follow-up.

Introduction: Sex differences and the (rural or urban) nature of populations largely determine the integrated management of time-dependent pathologies such as strokes, which is the main cause of female hospitalisation and mortality in our setting.

Aim: To determine whether any differential characteristics can be observed between male and female stroke patients in a rural healthcare area in the Principality of Asturias.

Patients And Methods: A descriptive retrospective study was conducted at the Jarrio Hospital.

Electronic address:

Interferon-gamma release assays are widely used for the diagnosis of tuberculosis infection in Spain. However, there is no consensus on their application in specific clinical scenarios. To develop a guide-line for their use, a panel of experts comprising specialists in infectious diseases, respiratory diseases, microbiology, pediatrics and preventive medicine, together with a methodologist, conducted a systematic literature search, summarized the findings, rated the quality of the evidence, and formulated recommendations following the Grading of Recommendations of Assessment Development and Evaluations methodology.

Alterations of p14 , p15 , and p16 Genes in Primary Laryngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Pathol Oncol Res

January 2017

Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Instituto Universitario de Oncología del Principado de Asturias, Hospital Universitario Central de Asturias, Avenida de Roma, 33011, Oviedo, Asturias, España.

The 9p21 gene cluster, harboring growth suppressive genes p14 , p15 , and p16 , is one of the major aberration hotspots in head and neck cancers. We try to elucidate specific aberrations affecting this region, throughout methylation-specific multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MS-MLPA) assay. Methylation of the gene was investigated by MS-MLPA in a well-characterized series of 27 laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas and 20 samples of healthy mucosa.

Background: Acetaminophen is extensively used during pregnancy. But there is a lack of population-representative cohort studies evaluating its effects on a range of neuropsychological and behavioural endpoints. We aimed to assess whether prenatal exposure to acetaminophen is adversely associated with neurodevelopmental outcomes at 1 and 5 years of age.

Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a highly heterogeneous tumor. There is increasing evidence of the role of tumor lymphocytic immune infiltrates in this subtype of breast cancer. Robust levels of tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) have been associated with improved disease-free and overall survival rates in TNBC patients with and without any treatment.

The introduction of trastuzumab therapy markedly improved the poor prognosis associated with HER2-amplified breast cancers. Despite this, the presence of primary and acquired resistance to trastuzumab treatment remains a significant common challenge. The identification of resistance mechanisms and the incorporation of new drugs that achieve a better blockade of HER family receptors signaling have resulted in improved outcomes.
