Phenotypic Clustering in Non-Cystic Fibrosis Bronchiectasis Patients: The Role of Eosinophils in Disease Severity.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

August 2021

Lung Cancer and Muscle Research Group, Pulmonology Department, Hospital del Mar-IMIM, Parc de Salut Mar, 08003 Barcelona, Spain.

Whether high blood eosinophil counts may define a better phenotype in bronchiectasis patients, as shown in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), remains to be investigated. Differential phenotypic characteristics according to eosinophil counts were assessed using a biostatistical approach in a large cohort study from the Spanish Online Bronchiectasis Registry (RIBRON). The 906 patients who met the inclusion criteria were clustered into two groups on the basis of their eosinophil levels.

We hypothesized that systemic inflammatory and nutritional parameters may differ between male and female patients with non-CF bronchiectasis. In a large patient cohort from the Spanish Online Bronchiectasis Registry (RIBRON), clinical features, systemic inflammatory and nutritional parameters were analyzed in male and female patients with bronchiectasis. Lung function, disease severity using several scores, nutritional status, systemic inflammatory parameters, and multivariate regression analyses were performed to identify differences between male and female patients in the target variables.

Background: In developed countries, health care delivery in dermatology is hampered by the low availability of dermatologists.

Objective: To analyze the feasibility of a teledermatology-based action plan to provide initial dermatologic care in areas with low availability of dermatologists.

Methods: A cross-sectional study describing the feasibility and cost of a 12-month action plan based on a store-and-forward teledermatology (TD) connecting primary care centers and a TD center.

Introduction: We aimed to assess the effectiveness and tolerability of dolutegravir (DTG), abacavir (ABC) and lamivudine (3TC) administered as branded STR (DTG/ABC/3TC) or as two separate pills (DTG and either branded ABC/3TC [DTG+(ABC/3TC)b] or generic ABC/3TC [DTG+(ABC/3TC)g]).

Methods: We included individuals from the multicentre cohort of the Spanish HIV/AIDS Research Network (CoRIS) who received DTG/ABC/3TC, DTG+(ABC/3TC)b or DTG+(ABC/3TC)g during 2015 to 2018. We used multivariable logistic regression to compare the proportion of antiretroviral-naïve individuals who achieved viral suppression (VS) (viral load ≤50 copies/mL) at 24 weeks of initiating with DTG+(ABC/3TC)b or DTG+(ABC/3TC)g versus DTG/ABC/3TC.

Introduction: The Sydney system proposal for the study and reporting of lymphadenopathy by fine-needle aspiration (FNA) constitutes one of the first attempts to standardize this procedure. Here, we review its applicability.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective study in which all ultrasound-guided FNAs (USFNAs) of superficial lymphadenopathy (palpable or not) performed by interventional pathologists in 2 specialized hospital centers were quantified over 2 years.

The important role of postural stability in exercise performance has been determined by several authors. Despite this, few studies have analyzed the relationship between respiratory muscles' strength and postural stability in athletes. For this reason, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between postural stability and respiratory muscles' function in male soccer players.

Prenatal Exposure to Cigarette Smoke and Anogenital Distance at 4 Years in the INMA-Asturias Cohort.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

April 2021

Spanish Consortium for Research on Epidemiology and Public Health (CIBERESP), Monforte de Lemos Avenue 3-5, 28029 Madrid, Spain.

Smoking by women is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes such as spontaneous abortion, preterm delivery, low birth weight, infertility, and prolonged time to pregnancy. Anogenital distance (AGD) is a sensitive biomarker of prenatal androgen and antiandrogen exposure. We investigated the effect of smoking and passive smoke exposure during pregnancy on anogenital distance in offspring at 4 years in the INMA-Asturias cohort (Spain).

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how maternal sleep duration affects the birth weight of newborns, using data from 2536 mother-neonate pairs in a Spanish birth cohort from 2004-2006.
  • Results showed that mothers who slept less than 7 hours saw an increase in birth weight by about 44.7 grams for each extra hour of sleep, though this was not significant after accounting for other factors.
  • Conversely, mothers who slept more than 9 hours experienced a decrease in birth weight by 39.2 grams for each additional hour of sleep, indicating that both insufficient and excessive sleep can negatively impact newborn health.

Introduction: To assess the impact of fatigue due to incorrect night rest in the performance of a laparoscopic manual anastomosis.

Methods: A prospective study evaluating the results from the realization of a manual endotrainer entero-enteral anastomosis performed by residents in terms of fatigue caused by inadequate nightly rest. Two groups were established; the fatigue group (F): anastomosis performed by residents coming off shift who slept less than seven hours and the rest group (R), being those who slept at home for more than 7 hours.

Objective: To analyze which factors predict mediastinal N2/N3 lymph node staging and diagnostic accuracy of PET and CT to determine it.

Patients And Methods: We analyzed data collected prospectively in a database that included patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who underwent EBUS-TBNA. Prior to EBUS-TBNA, CT and PET were used to define the radiographic N stage and lymph nodes with short axis ≥ 1 cm by CT or with ratio between maximum standardized uptake value (maxSUV), by PET, of lymph node and primary tumor greater than 0.

Electroencephalograms (EEG) are one of the most commonly used measures to study brain functioning at a macroscopic level. The structure of the EEG time series is composed of many neural rhythms interacting at different spatiotemporal scales. This interaction is often named as cross frequency coupling, and consists of transient couplings between various parameters of different rhythms.
