Background: Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, including upadacitinib, have been recently approved for the treatment of moderate-severe atopic dermatitis (AD) and real-world data on upadacitinib effectiveness and safety are limited. This interim analysis aimed to assess effectiveness and safety of upadacitinib throughout 48 weeks of observation in a real-world adult AD population.

Methods: This prospective study collected data on adult patients affected by moderate-to-severe AD and treated with upadacitinib at the dosage of either 15 mg or 30 mg daily based on the physician decision.

Introduction: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) suggested that liquid formulation of botulinum toxin type A (aboBoNT-A) is safe and effective, but data confirming these characteristics in a real-life heterogenous set of patients are currently lacking. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of the ready-to-use aboBoNT-A solution in adults with moderate-to-severe glabellar wrinkles.

Methods: In this real-life, multicenter, retrospective, observational study, healthy adults were treated at baseline only with aboBoNT-A solution on the glabellar area and followed up for 24 weeks.

Purpose: In the past decades, the human amniotic membrane has been largely applied for several surgical and non-surgical procedures. It has been farther demonstrated that both hAM and cornea share similar patterns of expression of structural components of the basement membrane (like laminin 5 and collagen IV) making hAM an useful tissue for ocular surface reconstruction. Since 1996 in fact, amniotic membrane transplantation has been applied to a large number of ocular surface diseases including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, pterygium, corneal ulceration, ocular surface reconstruction after chemical/thermal burns and in the reconstruction after excision of ocular surface neoplasia.

Cryopreservation of human amniotic membrane for ocular surface reconstruction: a comparison between protocols.

Cell Tissue Bank

December 2022

Fondazione Banca degli Occhi del Veneto, c/o Pad. G. Rama - Via Paccagnella 11, 30174, Venice, Italy.

Purpose: To compare the effects on adhesive and structural properties of newer preservation conditions to those obtained with an established, standardized protocol (dimethyl sulfoxide at -180 °C). In attempt to simplify and enhance the safety of the procedure, we tested dextran-based freezing medium and a dry condition (no medium) at temperatures of -80 °C.

Methods: Five patches of human amniotic membrane were obtained from three different donors.

We describe the first Italian case of Shewanella algae septicemia in an immunocompetent patient with chronic leg ulcers. The patient had been exposed to seawater before the onset of symptoms. Despite the absence of severe underlying diseases, the primary soft tissue infection of the leg was complicated by hematogenous dissemination.

Non-AIDS definings malignancies among human immunodeficiency virus-positive subjects: Epidemiology and outcome after two decades of HAART era.

Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has been widely available in industrialized countries since 1996; its widespread use determined a dramatic decline in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related mortality, and consequently, a significant decrease of AIDS-defining cancers. However the increased mean age of HIV-infected patients, prolonged exposure to environmental and lifestyle cancer risk factors, and coinfection with oncogenic viruses contributed to the emergence of other malignancies that are considered non-AIDS-defining cancers (NADCs) as a relevant fraction of morbidity and mortality among HIV-infected people twenty years after HAART introduction. The role of immunosuppression in the pathogenesis of NADCs is not well defined, and future researches should investigate the etiology of NADCs.

Objective: To define the best conditions for amniotic membrane preparation, storage and banking in its use for corneal reconstruction. Methods: Amniotic membrane pieces were prepared under sterile conditions from placentas selected on the basis of donor medical and social history, serology, microbiological tests and histology. The pieces were kept at -140 degrees C but before grafting they were thawed and stored at 4 degrees C in RPMI medium, to have a preparation usable within 72 h.
