  • Exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) is more effective than corticosteroids for achieving mucosal healing in children with Crohn's disease, without the negative side effects of steroids.
  • A study covering 222 newly diagnosed pediatric patients found that 83% achieved clinical remission after an average of 8 weeks of EEN, with significant reductions in faecal calprotectin levels.
  • Factors predicting a better response to EEN include specific scores on the Crohn's disease activity index, lower calprotectin levels, elevated CRP, and ileal involvement, suggesting EEN should be first-line treatment for pediatric Crohn's disease.

The clinical diagnosis of von Willebrand disease (VWD), particularly type 1, can be complex because several genetic and environmental factors affect von Willebrand factor (VWF) plasma levels. An estimated 60% of the phenotypic variation is attributable to hereditary factors, with the ABO blood group locus being the most influential. However, recent studies provide strong evidence that nonsynonymous single nucleotide variants (SNVs) contribute to VWF and factor VIII phenotypic variability in healthy individuals.

Recommended genetic categorization of acute myeloid leukaemias (AML) includes a favourable-risk category, but not all these patients have good prognosis. Here, we used next-generation sequencing to evaluate the mutational profile of 166 low-risk AML patients: 30 core-binding factor (CBF)-AMLs, 33 nucleophosmin (NPM1)-AMLs, 4 biCEBPα-AMLs and 101 acute promyelocytic leukaemias (APLs). Functional categories of mutated genes differed among subgroups.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to identify risk factors for complicated Enterococcus faecalis urinary tract infections (UTIs) in older patients, as these are not well understood, involving a cohort of 659 patients admitted to the hospital.
  • - Results showed that 13.2% of patients had E. faecalis UTI, with a significant proportion experiencing severe sepsis and a higher incidence of inadequate antibiotic treatment compared to Gram-negative UTIs.
  • - The authors concluded that elderly patients with urinary catheters or previous urinary tract procedures should receive empirical treatment for E. faecalis to reduce the risk of ineffective antibiotic therapy.

The Supera peripheral stent system has a woven wire design that may confer a potential advantage and has higher resistive radial strength of traditional stents, which gives it the ability to avoid kinking. Because a stent is a permanent implant in the target vessels and they would be subjected to a wide variety of torsion, compression, and stress, a rupture is not surprising. Only three cases of ruptured Supera stents have been published in literature.
