Background: Emphysematous pyelonephritis (EPN) is a necrotizing infection of the kidney and surrounding tissues with significant mortality. We aimed to assess the clinical factors and their influence on prognosis in patients being managed for EPN with and without ESBL-producing bacteria and to identify if those with EPN due to ESBL infections fared any different.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on patients with EPN diagnosis from 22 centers across 11 countries (between 2013 and 2020).

Background: The severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is related to several factors, including age, sex, and comorbidities (obesity, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension). However, systemic inflammation plays a fundamental role in COVID-19 pathophysiology. Several studies have described this association employing specific biomarkers that are not routinely used in clinical practice.

Article Synopsis
  • * The lipid accumulation product (LAP) is used to evaluate central fat and serves as a marker for cardiovascular and metabolic risks, and this study explores its link to oxidative stress biomarkers.
  • * In a study of 250 adults, a significant positive relationship was found between LAP and oxidative stress (measured by MDA levels), particularly in women, suggesting that higher LAP levels might indicate increased oxidative stress.

Background: Few studies have assessed lung function in Hispanic subjects recovering from mild COVID-19. Therefore, we examined the prevalence of impaired pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) as defined by values below the lower limit of normal (< LLN, < 5th percentile) or less than 80% of predicted in Hispanics recovering from mild COVID-19. We also examined the prevalence of a restrictive spirometric pattern as defined by the ratio of forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV) to forced vital capacity (FVC) being ≥ LLN with the FVC being < LLN.
