Objective: To identify central-line (CL)-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) incidence and risk factors in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

Design: From July 1, 1998, to February 12, 2022, we conducted a multinational multicenter prospective cohort study using online standardized surveillance system and unified forms.

Setting: The study included 728 ICUs of 286 hospitals in 147 cities in 41 African, Asian, Eastern European, Latin American, and Middle Eastern countries.

View Article and Find Full Text PDF
Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify rates and risk factors for central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) in 58 ICUs across 8 Latin American countries from 2014 to 2022.
  • A total of 29,385 patients were observed, leading to a CLABSI rate of 4.30 per 1,000 central line days, with significant risk linked to longer hospital stays, more central line days prior to infection, and infections occurring in publicly-owned facilities.
  • The research suggests targeting strategies to reduce length of stay and central line days, and replacing high-risk femoral and internal-jugular lines with PICC lines to mitigate CLABSI risks.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify risk factors for ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in intensive care units (ICUs) of low- and middle-income countries, where VAP rates are significantly higher than in high-income countries.
  • The research was a prospective cohort analysis covering 743 ICUs across 282 hospitals in 42 diverse countries over 24 years, following 289,643 patients for a total of nearly 2 million patient days.
  • Key identified risk factors for acquiring VAP included male sex, prolonged ICU stay, use of mechanical ventilation, and specific ICU admissions (such as oncology and respiratory ICUs), with CPAP showing the highest associated risk.

Background: The International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium (INICC) has found a high ICU mortality rate in Latin America.

Methods: A prospective cohort study in 198 ICUs of 96 hospitals in 46 cities in 12 Latin American countries to identify mortality risk factors (RF), and data were analyzed using multiple logistic regression.

Results: Between 07/01/1998 and 02/12/2022, 71,685 patients, followed during 652,167 patient-days, acquired 4700 HAIs, and 10,890 died.

Article Synopsis
  • The International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium identified high mortality rates in ICU patients and aimed to find risk factors associated with all-cause mortality.
  • A study involving over 300,000 patients in ICUs across multiple countries revealed key mortality risk factors, including infections and longer hospital stays.
  • To improve patient outcomes, the study recommends targeting modifiable factors like infection prevention and managing the length of stay in ICUs.

Polyphenols as potential enhancers of stem cell therapy against neurodegeneration.

Neural Regen Res

October 2022

Sección de Estudios de Posgrado e Investigación. Escuela Superior de Medicina, Instituto Politécnico Nacional, México City, México.

The potential of polyphenols for treating chronic-degenerative diseases (particularly neurodegenerative diseases) is attractive. However, the selection of the best polyphenol for each treatment, the mechanisms by which they act, and their efficacy are frequently discussed. In this review, the basics and the advances in the field, as well as suggestions for using natural and synthetic polyphenols alone or in a combinatorial strategy with stem cell assays, are compiled and discussed.

Introduction: The novel coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) represents a major public health problem and it is key to find a treatment that reduces mortality. Our objective was to estimate whether treatment with 400 mg/day of Hydroxychloroquine for 10 days reduces in-hospital mortality in subjects with severe respiratory disease due to COVID-19 compared with placebo.

Material And Methods: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Hydroxychloroquine for the treatment of severe disease by COVID-19 through an intention-to-treat analysis.

August 2019

Surgery Department, Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición "Salvador Zubirán", Mexico City, Mexico. Electronic address:

Introduction: Dorsoepigastric flap (DF), first described by. Haddad and Jimenez, is a variant of the classic lattisimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap that only utilizes a minimum quantity of muscle tissue, through which the vascular pedicle passes by. It has been used primarily as an acceptable alternative in mammary reconstruction when the use of thoraco abdominal muscles is not viable, and offers several advantages such as adequate flap volume with generous cutaneous island dimensions and functional preservation of the latissimus dorsi.

Monoamines and their Derivatives on GPCRs: Potential Therapy for Alzheimer's Disease.

Curr Alzheimer Res

October 2020

Departamento de Fisiologia y Bioquimica. Seccion de Estudios de Posgrado e Investigacion, Escuela Superior de Medicina, Instituto Politecnico Nacional, Plan de San Luis y Diaz Miron s/n, 11340, Mexico City, Mexico.

Albeit cholinergic depletion remains the key event in Alzheimer's Disease (AD), recent information describes stronger links between monoamines (trace amines, catecholamines, histamine, serotonin, and melatonin) and AD than those known in the past century. Therefore, new drug design strategies focus efforts to translate the scope on these topics and to offer new drugs which can be applied as therapeutic tools in AD. In the present work, we reviewed the state-of-art regarding genetic, neuropathology and neurochemistry of AD involving monoamine systems.

Effect of tibolone pretreatment on kinases and phosphatases that regulate the expression and phosphorylation of Tau in the hippocampus of rats exposed to ozone.

Neural Regen Res

March 2018

Unidad de Investigación Médica en Farmacología, Hospital de Especialidades, Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI, Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, Av. Cuauhtémoc 330 Col. Doctores. C. P. 06720. Mexico City, Mexico.

Oxidative stress (OS) is a key process in the development of many neurodegenerative diseases, memory disorders, and other pathological processes related to aging. Tibolone (TIB), a synthetic hormone used as a treatment for menopausal symptoms, decreases lipoperoxidation levels, prevents memory impairment and learning disability caused by ozone (O) exposure. However, it is not clear if TIB could prevent the increase in phosphorylation induced by oxidative stress of the microtubule-associated protein Tau.
