Myelolipoma of the adrenal gland is a rare, benign, non-functioning tumor characterized by the presence of adipose tissue and bone marrow elements. We present the case of a 48-year-old woman with intermittent left flank pain and an incidental finding of an adrenal tumor on computed tomography. The patient underwent laparoscopic tumor resection due to the large size of the tumor.

Direct-acting antivirals (DAA) are effective in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, but there is little information about real-world effectiveness in people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLH). The aim of this study was to determinate the effectiveness of DAA to achieve sustained virologic response at week 12 post-treatment (SVR12) in PLH with HCV coinfection and in people with HCV-monoinfection. We conducted a prospective cohort.

NK cells have unique attributes to react towards cells undergoing malignant transformation or viral infection. This reactivity is regulated by activating or inhibitory germline encoded receptors. An impaired NK cell function may result from an aberrant expression of such receptors, a condition often seen in patients with hematological cancers.

Background: The awake prone positioning strategy for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome is a safe, simple and cost-effective technique used to improve hypoxaemia. We aimed to evaluate intubation and mortality risk in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) who underwent awake prone positioning during hospitalisation.

Methods: In this retrospective, multicentre observational study conducted between 1 May 2020 and 12 June 2020 in 27 hospitals in Mexico and Ecuador, nonintubated patients with COVID-19 managed with awake prone or awake supine positioning were included to evaluate intubation and mortality risk through logistic regression models; multivariable and centre adjustment, propensity score analyses, and E-values were calculated to limit confounding.

Background: Refining risk stratification to avoid very early relapses (VER) in Mexican patients with B-lineage acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) could lead to better survival rates in our population.

Aim Of The Study: The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between the United Kingdom ALL (UKALL)-CNA classifier and VER risk in Mexican patients with childhood B-ALL.

Methods: A nested case-control study of 25 cases with VER and 38 frequency-matched controls without relapse was conducted within the MIGICCL study cohort.

Background: Documenting the patterns of oral anticoagulation therapy (OAT) is essential to prevent thromboembolic complications of nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF).

Objective: To report the patterns of OAT according to age and thromboembolic risk in patients included in CARMEN-AF, a nationwide registry of NVAF in Mexico, an upper middle-income country.

Material And Methods: There were 1,423 consecutive patients ≥18 years old and with at least one thromboembolic risk factor enrolled in the CARMEN-AF Registry at their regular clinical visit during a three-year period.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent studies have highlighted the significance of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the development of leukemia, suggesting their potential use as biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
  • A microarray analysis focused on children with B-lineage ALL found that high expression of lncRNAs LINC00152 and LINC01013 was linked to increased risks of early relapse and mortality, with specific hazard ratios calculated for different expression levels.
  • The findings suggest that LINC00152 might play a regulatory role in certain biological processes related to cell adhesion and could serve as a promising biomarker for predicting relapse in children suffering from B-ALL.

Recent studies have shown that P-selectin promotes the early formation of atherosclerotic plaque. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether the gene single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are associated with presence of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and with plasma P-selectin levels in a case-control association study. The sample size was estimated for a statistical power of 80%.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common childhood cancer worldwide, with Mexico City having one of the highest incidence rates.
  • The study aimed to characterize natural killer (NK) cell function in Mexican children diagnosed with ALL, comparing them to healthy controls, and found reduced NK cell activity in ALL patients.
  • It was noted that not all ALL patients had the same level of NK cell dysfunction; high-risk patients showed significantly impaired NK cell-mediated cytotoxicity compared to standard-risk patients.

Interleukin 10 gene polymorphisms and frailty syndrome in elderly Mexican people: (Sadem study).

Mol Genet Genomic Med

September 2019

Unidad de investigación en Epidemiologia Clínica, Hospital Regional No. 1, Dr. Carlos McGregor Sánchez Navarro, Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, México City, México.

Article Synopsis
  • Frailty is characterized by reduced functional reserve, leading to higher morbidity and mortality, and this study investigates the link between IL10 gene polymorphisms and frailty in a Mexican population.
  • The research analyzed 984 participants, categorizing them into nonfrail, prefrail, and frail groups, revealing associations between specific IL10 polymorphisms (rs1800896, rs1800871) and increased frailty susceptibility.
  • Two risk haplotypes (ACG and CCG) and three protective haplotypes (ACA, ATG, and ATA) were identified, indicating that certain genetic variations in IL10 may influence frailty risk in older adults.

Article Synopsis
  • Mexico City has a high incidence and mortality rate of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), with a noted rise in childhood obesity, which is linked to worse outcomes in these patients.
  • A study analyzed 1,070 children under 15 diagnosed with ALL to determine if obesity/overweight predicted early mortality and relapse within the first 24 months.
  • Results indicated that being overweight or obese at diagnosis significantly increased the risk of early mortality, but there was no strong association found between these conditions and early relapse rates.

Background: It has been proposed that abnormal modulation of inflammatory response is involved in the physiopathology of idiopathic recurrent spontaneous abortion (iRSA). Factors that may participate in this process include the genetic background such as carrying specific polymorphisms of genes with functional effects.

Objective: The objective is to study the association between iRSA and the frequency of intron-2 variable number tandem repeat-polymorphisms of interleukin-1 receptor antagonist gene (IL1RN).

Background: Dialysis patients are classified according to their peritoneal permeability as low transporter (LT, low solute permeability) or high transporter (HT, high solute permeability). Tight junction (TJ) proteins are critical to maintain ions, molecules and water paracellular transport through peritoneum. Exposure to peritoneal dialysis solutions causes damage to TJ in human peritoneal mesothelial cells (HPMCs).
