Purpose Of Review: This review focuses on the association between RA and heart failure, highlighting the role of inflammation and the prevalence of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) in this population.

Recent Findings: The incidence of heart failure in RA patients is two to three times higher than in the general population, with inflammation playing a significant role independent of traditional cardiovascular risk factors. HFpEF accounts for about half of heart failure cases and is increasingly recognized in RA patients, although it remains underdiagnosed.

Article Synopsis
  • The review evaluates the effectiveness and safety of Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKi) for treating moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD) in adolescents, highlighting a need for systemic therapies in this age group.
  • While JAKi like abrocitinib, baricitinib, and upadacitinib show promise with quick results, baricitinib is ineffective in younger children aged 2 to 10 years.
  • Major safety concerns have not emerged in adolescent trials, though there are minor issues like herpes zoster infections and acne, indicating that JAKi could be a valuable option for managing severe AD in young patients.

Introduction: Diverticulitis is a prevalent gastrointestinal disease that may require surgical intervention. The aim of the study was to investigate the involvement of neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) as biomarkers of severity in complicated diverticular disease (CDD) in Mexican patients and their correlation with the need for surgical intervention, the length of hospital stay, and mortality.

Material And Methods: An observational, longitudinal, and retrospective study performed from 2017 to 2021 was considered in patients over 18 years of age, with a diagnosis of CDD by using computed tomography and with a hemogram taken in the first 24 hours upon admission to the emergency department to describe the sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values (PPV and NPV, respectively) of NLR and PLR in the CDD.

Durometry for the Assessment of Severity of Post-thrombotic Syndrome and Possible Clinical Applications.

Vasc Endovascular Surg

January 2024

Section of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy, Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán, Mexico City, Mexico.

Background: Post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) impacts the patient's quality of life. Available scales to determine its severity remain controversial, therefore, it is of importance to identify new auxiliary methods for the assessment of this sequelae. Measurement of skin hardness (MSH) might be decisive in tracking PTS.

The metabolic phenotype of the patient influences the reduction in carotid intima-media thickness achieved following metabolic surgery.

J Int Med Res

November 2022

Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine Research Group, Coordinación de Investigación, Centro Médico Nacional "20 de Noviembre" ISSSTE, Mexico City, Mexico.

Objectives: To determine whether metabolic phenotype is associated with the change in carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) in patients undergoing bariatric /metabolic surgery (BMS).

Methods: We performed a case-control study of BMS candidates who had metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO) or metabolically healthy obesity (MHO). We measured the change in CIMT during the 9 months following BMS.

Effects of prenatal exposure to maternal COVID-19 and perinatal care on neonatal outcome: results from the INTERCOVID Multinational Cohort Study.

Am J Obstet Gynecol

September 2022

Nuffield Department of Women's & Reproductive Health, University of Oxford, Oxford, United Kingdom; Oxford Maternal and Perinatal Health Institute, Green Templeton College, University of Oxford, Oxford, United Kingdom.

Background: The effect of COVID-19 in pregnancy on maternal outcomes and its association with preeclampsia and gestational diabetes mellitus have been reported; however, a detailed understanding of the effects of maternal positivity, delivery mode, and perinatal practices on fetal and neonatal outcomes is urgently needed.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on fetal and neonatal outcomes and the role of mode of delivery, breastfeeding, and early neonatal care practices on the risk of mother-to-child transmission.

Study Design: In this cohort study that took place from March 2020 to March 2021, involving 43 institutions in 18 countries, 2 unmatched, consecutive, unexposed women were concomitantly enrolled immediately after each infected woman was identified, at any stage of pregnancy or delivery, and at the same level of care to minimize bias.

Preeclampsia and COVID-19: results from the INTERCOVID prospective longitudinal study.

Am J Obstet Gynecol

September 2021

Nuffield Department of Women's & Reproductive Health, University of Oxford, Women's Centre, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, United Kingdom; Oxford Maternal and Perinatal Health Institute, Green Templeton College, University of Oxford, Oxford, United Kingdom.

Background: It is unclear whether the suggested link between COVID-19 during pregnancy and preeclampsia is an independent association or if these are caused by common risk factors.

Objective: This study aimed to quantify any independent association between COVID-19 during pregnancy and preeclampsia and to determine the effect of these variables on maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality.

Study Design: This was a large, longitudinal, prospective, unmatched diagnosed and not-diagnosed observational study assessing the effect of COVID-19 during pregnancy on mothers and neonates.

Importance: Detailed information about the association of COVID-19 with outcomes in pregnant individuals compared with not-infected pregnant individuals is much needed.

Objective: To evaluate the risks associated with COVID-19 in pregnancy on maternal and neonatal outcomes compared with not-infected, concomitant pregnant individuals.

Design, Setting, And Participants: In this cohort study that took place from March to October 2020, involving 43 institutions in 18 countries, 2 unmatched, consecutive, not-infected women were concomitantly enrolled immediately after each infected woman was identified, at any stage of pregnancy or delivery, and at the same level of care to minimize bias.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a major health problem in México. The identification of modifiable risk factors and genetic biomarkers is crucial for an integrative and personalized CAD risk evaluation. In this work, we aimed to validate in a Mexican population a set of eight selected polymorphisms previously associated with CAD, myocardial infarction (MI), or dyslipidemia.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a major problem of public health in Mexico. We investigated the influence of five polymorphisms, previously associated with obesity and cardiovascular disease in Europeans and Asians, on T2D in Mexican Mestizos. A total of 1358 subjects from 30 to 85 years old were genotyped for five loci: rs501120; rs1333049; rs2259816; rs9939609; and rs7799039.

Background: The predictive scale for mortality risk in patients with nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (NVUGIB) proposed by Italy's PNED (Progetto Nazionale Emorragia Digestiva) group has not been validated in Latin America since its original publication.

Aim: To compare the PNED system and the Rockall score as mortality predictors in patients hospitalized for NVUGIB.

Material And Methods: A multicenter, prospective, cross-sectional, analytic study was conducted that recruited patients diagnosed with nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding within the time frame of 2011 to 2015.

Methods: Plasma samples were obtained from 47 normotensive women (control group) and from 27 women with HDP (experimental group).
