Centro de Investigación en Salud Poblacional, Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública de México (INSP), Cuernavaca 62100, Morelos, Mexico.

There is scarce evidence on sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics that may explain adherence to different dietary patterns (DPs) during pregnancy. Our aims were to identify dietary patterns in a sample of pregnant Mexican women and to describe their association with selected sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics. This is a secondary cross-sectional analysis of 252 mothers of children that participated as controls in a hospital-based case-control study of childhood leukemia.

Chronic encapsulated sclerosing peritonitis (CESP) is a very rare cause of intestinal obstruction that has been associated with certain chronic conditions. It is characterized by the thickening of the peritoneum, generating a membrane that covers the intestinal loops and prevents their adequate mobilization. Most cases present as a surgical emergency, leading to a diagnosis during surgery; however, imaging studies can support the pre-surgical diagnosis.

Introduction: Diverticulitis is a prevalent gastrointestinal disease that may require surgical intervention. The aim of the study was to investigate the involvement of neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) as biomarkers of severity in complicated diverticular disease (CDD) in Mexican patients and their correlation with the need for surgical intervention, the length of hospital stay, and mortality.

Material And Methods: An observational, longitudinal, and retrospective study performed from 2017 to 2021 was considered in patients over 18 years of age, with a diagnosis of CDD by using computed tomography and with a hemogram taken in the first 24 hours upon admission to the emergency department to describe the sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values (PPV and NPV, respectively) of NLR and PLR in the CDD.

Article Synopsis
  • Epidemiological studies on acute leukemia (AL) risk factors in infants are limited, but maternal diet during pregnancy may play a crucial role in influencing the occurrence of AL in offspring.
  • A case-control study conducted in Mexico City from 2010 to 2019 analyzed maternal dietary habits in 109 infants with AL compared to 252 matched controls, using food frequency questionnaires.
  • Results indicated that higher consumption of allium vegetables was linked to a reduced risk of AL, while high-fat dairy products were associated with an increased risk, highlighting the potential impact of maternal nutrition on infant health.

Article Synopsis
  • Childhood cancer, especially acute leukemia, is the leading cause of disease-related deaths in children aged 5-14 in Mexico, highlighting the need for understanding dietary influences during pregnancy.
  • A hospital-based study compared dietary habits of mothers of 109 infants with acute leukemia to those of 152 healthy controls, showing that overall maternal dietary patterns can significantly impact infant health.
  • The findings indicate that a "Balanced & Vegetable-Rich" diet during pregnancy is associated with a lower risk of acute leukemia in infants, particularly for mothers of girls, emphasizing the role of maternal nutrition in disease prevention.

Introduction: Maternal dietary consumption during pregnancy has been inconclusively associated with acute leukemia (AL) in infants, probably because epidemiological evidence has emerged mainly from the analysis of one-by-one nutrient, which is not a real-life scenario. Our objective was to evaluate the association between AL in Mexican children under 2 years of age and their mothers' nutrients concomitant intake during pregnancy, as well as to explore whether there are differences between girls and boys.

Methods: We conducted a study of 110 cases of AL and 252 hospital-based controls in the Mexico City Metropolitan area from 2010 to 2019.

Anxiety is a mental disorder with a growing worldwide incidence due to the SARS-CoV-2 virus pandemic. Pharmacological therapy includes drugs such as benzodiazepines (BDZs) or azapirones like buspirone (BUSP) or analogs, which unfortunately produce severe adverse effects or no immediate response, respectively. Medicinal plants or their bioactive metabolites are a shared global alternative to treat anxiety.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) comprises a heterogeneous group of hematopoietic cell neoplasms of myeloid lineage that arise from the clonal expansion of their precursors in the bone marrow, interfering with cell differentiation, leading to a syndrome of bone marrow failure. AML is a consequence of genetic and epigenetic changes (point mutations, gene rearrangements, deletions, amplifications, and arrangements in epigenetic changes that influence gene expression) in hematopoietic precursor cells, which create a clone of abnormal cells that are capable of proliferating but cannot differentiate into mature hematopoietic cells or undergo programmed cell death. The diagnosis requires more than 20% myeloid blasts in the bone marrow and certain cytogenic abnormalities.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is linked to both genetic and environmental factors, with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in specific genes potentially increasing risk in pediatric populations in Mexico.
  • A multicenter study was conducted comparing children diagnosed with ALL to healthy controls, examining the impact of SNPs rs2910164, rs12803915, rs11614913, and rs3746444 through DNA analysis.
  • The results indicated a significant association of the rs3746444 SNP with a higher risk of developing ALL, particularly in males, highlighting the need for further research on the genetic mechanisms behind ALL.

Consensus on hemophilia in Mexico.

Gac Med Mex

Hematology department, Centro Médico Nacional 20 de Noviembre, ISSSTE, Mexico City. Mexico.

Hemophilia is a hemorrhagic disorder with a sex-linked inherited pattern, characterized by an inability to amplify coagulation due to a deficiency in coagulation factor VIII (hemophilia A or classic) or factor IX (hemophilia B). Sequencing of the genes involved in hemophilia has provided a description and record of the main mutations, as well as a correlation with the various degrees of severity. Hemorrhagic manifestations are related to levels of circulating factor, mainly affecting the musculoskeletal system and specifically the large joints (knees, ankles, and elbows).
