Article Synopsis
  • A study evaluated the efficacy and safety of first-line therapies for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), specifically comparing atezolizumab/bevacizumab (atezo/bev) and lenvatinib, focusing on bleeding and thromboembolic events.
  • A total of 464 patients from seven centers in Germany and Austria were analyzed, revealing that bleeding and thromboembolic events occurred in similar rates for both treatments within 6 months.
  • The findings suggest that safety concerns regarding bleeding and thromboembolic events might not significantly influence clinical decisions when selecting between atezo/bev and lenvatinib for HCC treatment.*

Experimental evidence for a robust, transdiagnostic marker in functional disorders: Erroneous sensorimotor processing in functional dizziness and functional movement disorder.

J Psychosom Res

August 2024

Department of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy, University Hospital Rechts der Isar, Technical University of Munich, Munich, Germany; Institute of Medical Technology, Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg, Cottbus, Germany.

Objective: Recent neuroscientific models suggest that functional bodily symptoms can be attributed to perceptual dysregulation in the central nervous system. Evidence for this hypothesis comes from patients with functional dizziness, who exhibit marked sensorimotor processing deficits during eye-head movement planning and execution. Similar findings in eye-head movement planning in patients with irritable bowel syndrome confirmed that these sensorimotor processing deficits represent a shared, transdiagnostic mechanism.

Introduction And Objectives: Adjuvant platinum-based chemotherapy for completely resected non-small cell lung cancer is associated with modest improvement in survival; nevertheless, no validated biomarker exists for predicting the benefit or harm of adjuvant platinum-based chemotherapy.

Materials And Methods: We simultaneously measured 27 cytokines in operative tumor specimens from a discovery cohort (n = 97) by multiplex immunoassay; half of the patients received adjuvant platinum-based chemotherapy, and the other half were observed. We tested possible prognostic and predictive factors in multivariate Cox models for overall survival (OS) and relapse-free survival (RFS), and a tree-based method was applied to detect predictive factors with respect to RFS.

IL-22-dependent responses and their role during infection.

Infect Immun

May 2024

Division of Host-Microbe Systems and Therapeutics, Department of Pediatrics, University of California San Diego, La Jolla, California, USA.

The mouse pathogen is utilized as a model organism for studying infections caused by the human pathogens enteropathogenic (EPEC) and enterohemorrhagic (EHEC) and to elucidate mechanisms of mucosal immunity. In response to infection, innate lymphoid cells and T cells secrete interleukin (IL)-22, a cytokine that promotes mucosal barrier function. IL-22 plays a pivotal role in enabling mice to survive and recover from infection, although the exact mechanisms involved remain incompletely understood.
