Motor Imagery Performance and Tactile Spatial Acuity: Are They Altered in People with Frozen Shoulder?

Int J Environ Res Public Health

October 2020

School of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health, The University of Sydney, Sydney 2006, Australia.

Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is a severe chronic pain condition that is not well understood and current treatment is suboptimal. In several other chronic pain conditions motor imagery and tactile acuity deficits are present, which are thought to represent associated neuroplastic changes. The aims of this study were to determine if motor imagery performance assessed by the left/right judgement task, and tactile acuity assessed by two-point discrimination, are altered in people with unilateral frozen shoulder.

Background: Spasticity affects 60-80% of people with multiple sclerosis (MS), impacting activity, participation and quality of life. We developed the group delivered spasticity self-management program, "MS Spasticity: Take Control" (STC), with DVDs for education and lower extremity stretching. STC is based on an international guideline and recommendations from systematic reviews and emphasizes the importance of stretching with specific stretching exercises.

Aims: Screening for asymptomatic atrial fibrillation (AF) could prevent strokes and save lives, but the AF burden of those detected can impact prognosis. New technologies enable continuous monitoring or intermittent electrocardiogram (ECG) snapshots, however, the relationship between AF detection rates and the burden of AF found with intermittent strategies is unknown. We simulated the likelihood of detecting AF using real-world 2-week continuous ECG recordings and developed a generalizable model for AF detection strategies.

Introduction: The Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Health Administration (VA) Strategic Plan (Fiscal Year 2018-2024) identified four priorities for care including easy access, timely and integrated care, accountability, and modernization, all of which can be directly or indirectly impacted by telemedicine technologies. These strategic goals, coupled with an anticipated rheumatology workforce shortage, has created a need for additional care delivery methods such as clinical video telehealth application to rheumatology (ie, telerheumatology). Rheumatology clinician perceptions of clinical usefulness telerheumatology have received limited attention in the past.

Variable rotation of the femur does not affect outcome with patient specific alignment navigated balanced TKA.

Knee Surg Sports Traumatol Arthrosc

February 2022

Department of Orthopaedics, Middlemore Hospital, 100 Hospital Rd, Otahuhu, Auckland, 2025, New Zealand.

Purpose: Excessive internal and external rotation of the femoral component has been associated with poor outcome with a measured-resection neutral mechanical alignment TKA. This technique assumes that every tibia is in 3° of varus so the femoral component is placed in 3° of external rotation relative to the posterior condylar axis to enable a balanced flexion gap. This is not the case as there is wide variability in the bony anatomy and soft tissue envelope of the knee so flexion imbalance may occur.

Epithelial barrier injury allows contaminants to cross-over into the blood stream and trigger an inflammatory response, contributing to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Currently there is no single test that can reliably diagnose intestinal mucosal barrier function or measure impaired epithelial cell integrity associated with increasing permeability. Here, we assess the association between serum proteins and small intestinal permeability as detected by confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE); in particular the known IBD marker-secreted phosphoprotein 24 (SPP24) and its binding partners; and use developed monoclonal antibodies to assess the role of SPP24 in mucosal healing.

Early life predictors of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are critically needed; they could inform etiological theory and may help identify new prevention targets. The current study examined prospectively whether maternal cytokine levels during pregnancy predict offspring ADHD symptoms at age 4-6 years. Secondarily, we evaluated maternal cytokine levels as a possible common pathway through which prenatal risks exert influence on child ADHD.
