J Nutr Health Aging

January 2025

Department of Hematology, Hospital Clínico Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca, University of Murcia, Instituto Murciano de Investigación Biosanitaria (IMIB-Arrixaca), Murcia, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted on atrial fibrillation (AF) patients starting vitamin K antagonist (VKA) therapy to determine the effect of comorbidities, frailty, and malnutrition on clinical outcomes.
  • The research found that a majority of patients had multiple health issues, and frailty significantly increased the risks for major bleeding and death, while malnutrition heightened the risk for strokes and overall mortality.
  • These findings underline the importance of addressing these factors in AF patients to improve their health outcomes during VKA treatment.

Objectives: EGFR exon 20 insertion (EGFRex20ins) mutations are found in up to 4% of all patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). These patients are often insensitive to EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and have worse prognosis than patients with more common EGFR mutations. In this multicenter, retrospective, real-world study, we sought to determine whether the administration of recently approved treatments that specifically target EGFRex20ins mutations could significantly improve outcomes in this patient population.

In esophagogastric surgery, the appearance of an anastomotic leak is the most feared complication. Early diagnosis is important for optimal management and successful resolution. For this reason, different studies have investigated the value of the use of markers to predict possible postoperative complications.

The authors report their experience with twenty-one consecutive patients who presented with symptoms and imaging characteristics of a herniated lumbar disc; of whom, at the time of surgery had a vascular loop instead. The procedure was performed on 14 women and seven men with a mean age of 39 years. Clinical complaints included lumbar aching with one limb overt radiculopathy in all patients; with additional sphincter dysfunction in two cases.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDUE) is a leading global cause of kidney failure, and the GENSEN Study aimed to explore its genetic causes through extensive genetic testing on a large patient population.
  • The study involved 818 patients under 45 with advanced CKDUE, discovering pathogenic gene variants in about 25% of them, with type IV collagen genes being the most commonly affected.
  • The research revealed significant previously undiagnosed genetic kidney diseases, suggesting that genomic testing can be a valuable approach in understanding and treating CKDUE.

Eur J Intern Med

September 2024

Emergency Department, Short Stay Unit and Hospitalization at Home Unit, Hospital General de Alicante, Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria y Biomédica de Alicante (ISABIAL), Universidad Miguel Hernández, Alicante, Spain. Electronic address:

Objective: To investigate the association of the addition of thiazide diuretic on top of loop diuretic and standard of care with short-term outcomes of patients discharged after surviving an acute heart failure (AHF) episode.

Methods: This is a secondary analysis of 14,403 patients from three independent cohorts representing the main departments involved in AHF treatment for whom treatment at discharge was recorded and included loop diuretics. Patients were divided according to whether treatment included or not thiazide diuretics.

Intensive Care to facilitate Organ Donation (ICOD) consists of the initiation or continuation of intensive care measures in patients with a devastating brain injury (DBI) in whom curative treatment is deemed futile and death by neurological criteria (DNC) is foreseen, to incorporate organ donation into their end-of-life plans. In this study we evaluate the outcomes of patients subject to ICOD and identify radiological and clinical factors associated with progression to DNC. In this first prospective multicenter study we tested by multivariate regression the association of clinical and radiological severity features with progression to DNC.

Article Synopsis
  • The 2023 monkeypox epidemic originated from a specific lineage of the monkeypox virus traced back to Nigeria in 1971, with a subclade IIb showing higher person-to-person transmission rates due to genomic changes.
  • Researchers used advanced techniques to analyze the genome of the monkeypox virus from the current epidemic, highlighting significant variations in low-complexity regions (LCRs) that are often overlooked.
  • The study found that variations in LCRs may influence the expression and function of key poxvirus genes, suggesting that future genome studies should focus on these regions to better understand differences in the virus's behavior.
