  • Congenital neutropenia is a primary immunodeficiency marked by low neutrophil counts and can be mild to severe; hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a potential treatment but can lead to complications like graft-versus-host disease.
  • A case of a 2-year-old girl with congenital neutropenia who developed scalp abscesses and cellulitis was reported, and after a transplant procedure, she was diagnosed with graft-versus-host disease, which ultimately led to her death.
  • Graft-versus-host disease is a serious concern in stem cell transplants, highlighting the importance of early recognition and effective management to reduce risks of high morbidity and mortality.

Unusual co-infection of severe malaria by Plasmodium vivax and dengue virus in Mexico.

Trop Biomed

December 2022

Laboratorio de Enfermedades Tropicales, Centro de Investigaciones Biomédicas, Universidad Autónoma de Campeche, C.P. 24039 San Francisco de Campeche, Campeche, México.

Malaria and dengue fever are among the most common mosquito-borne diseases worldwide; however, reports of coinfection are rare. We present a case of severe malaria and dengue coinfection in a 16-yearold female patient presenting with fever, thrombocytopenia, pleural effusion, myopericarditis, and acute respiratory distress syndrome. Dengue infection was confirmed by the presence of immunoglobin M antibodies and nonstructural protein 1, while malaria was confirmed by the presence of Plasmodium vivax in thick and thin blood smears.

[Correlation between Predictive Index of Difficult Intubation and Cormack].

Rev Med Inst Mex Seguro Soc

January 2023

Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, Hospital General de Zona No. 1, Servicio de Investigación en Salud. San Francisco de Campeche, Campeche, México.

Background: More than 600 people die each year in developed countries from complications at the time of orotracheal intubation. Studies have shown that all predictors used so far have low ability to predict difficult airway. When analyzing this ability, both clinical suspicion, indirect laryngoscopy and even the different individual examinations showed predictive values higher than 80%.

"Healthcare Kamikazes" during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Purpose in Life and Moral Courage as Mediators of Psychopathology.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

July 2021

TXP Research Group, Universidad Cardenal Herrera-CEU, CEU Universities, 12006 Castelló de la Plana, Spain.

Although the required personal protective equipment was not available during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Spanish healthcare workers continued to work, being dubbed as 'healthcare kamikazes'. Two possible reasons are moral courage and purpose in life that, in turn, would modulate the appearance of psychopathology. Cross-sectional study was carried out in 90 Spanish and 59 Mexican healthcare professionals, and 56 medical and nursing students.

Background: Hospitalized pediatric hematology-oncology (PHO) patients have frequent clinical deterioration events (CDE) requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission, particularly in resource-limited settings. The objective of this study was to describe CDEs in hospitalized PHO patients in Latin America and to identify event-level and center-level risk factors for mortality.

Methods: In 2017, the authors implemented a prospective registry of CDEs, defined as unplanned transfers to a higher level of care, use of ICU-level interventions on the floor, or nonpalliative floor deaths, in 16 PHO centers in 10 countries.

The genus Rickettsia in Mexico: Current knowledge and perspectives.

Ticks Tick Borne Dis

March 2021

Centro de Medicina Tropical, Unidad de Investigación en Medicina Experimental, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Ciudad de México, Mexico. Electronic address:

The genus Rickettsia encompasses 35 valid species of intracellular, coccobacilli bacteria that can infect several eukaryotic taxa, causing multiple emerging and re-emerging diseases worldwide. This work aimed to gather and summarise the current knowledge about the genus Rickettsia in Mexico, updating the taxonomy of the bacteria and their hosts by including all the records available until 2020, to elucidate host-parasite relationships and determine the geographical distribution of each Rickettsia species present in the country. Until now, 14 species of Rickettsia belonging to four groups have been recorded in Mexico.

Omitted Stimulus Potential Depends on the Sensory Modality.

Acta Neurobiol Exp (Wars)

August 2018

Facultad de Medicina, Universidad Autónoma de Campeche, Colonia Buenavista, San Francisco de Campeche, Campeche, México.

Determining the characteristics of Omitted Stimulus Potential (OSP) parameters using different sensory modalities is important because they reflect timing processes and have a substantial influence on time perception. At the same time, the central mechanisms of time perception associated with sensory processing can modulate cortical brain waves related to cognition. This experiment tested the relationship between parameters of the whole OSP brain wave when trains of auditory, visual or somatosensory stimuli were applied.

The Relationship between Parameters of Long-Latency Evoked Potentials in a Multisensory Design.

Clin EEG Neurosci

October 2016

Centro de Investigaciones Biomédicas, Cuerpo Académico Biomedicina, Universidad Autónoma de Campeche, Campeche, México.

In previous papers, we have shown that parameters of the omitted stimulus potential (OSP), which occurs at the end of a train of sensory stimuli, strongly depend on the modality. A train of stimuli also produces long-latency evoked potentials (LLEP) at the beginning of the train. This study is an extension of the OSP research, and it tested the relationship between parameters (ie, rate of rise, amplitude, and peak latency) of the P2 waves when trains of auditory, visual, or somatosensory stimuli were applied.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a neurological disorder which has not been explored using clustering algorithms. Clustering algorithms perform more efficiently when they work only with relevant features. In this work, we applied correlation-based feature selection (CFS), chi-squared, information gain, symmetrical uncertainty, and consistency filter methods to select the most relevant features from a 156-feature real dataset.
